William Earl Cunningham sentenced in MT
The Army Times reports that William Earl Cunningham, the jump-qualified carpenter who killed Nathan Horn over whose branch of military service was better, was sentenced to 80 years in prison yesterday in Montana;
Cunningham claimed he acted in self-defense when he slashed Horn’s throat. The men were arguing over whether the Army or Marines is the better branch of the military.
At the sentencing Cunningham told the family he prays for them to have peace and comfort and told them he was sorry Horn had died.
Cunningham did two tours of honorable service as a carpenter and a driver;

He now has the rest of his life to sit in a prison cell and ask himself if it was worth it.
Need to read with was printed in the Billings Gazette… looks like he had a history of violence and a problem with alcohol

Unfortunately, instead of getting help he took the life of a 40 year old man who was a son and father.
AATW?
Looks like it for at least part of his first enlistment, beretverde.
Also looks like he’s quite likely to spend the rest of his days in prison for murder.
Which basically means he has a life sentence.
Dude looks like The Hulkster.
I remember this story. What a pair of idiots.
This clown is about to have a long time to think about which branch is better.
In my opinion, the Navy is better.
Them is fightin’ words!!!,,,, well not really. I would challenge you to a game of scrabble but you’d kick my ass,, oh I know,, spelling!!,,, shit Id lose that as well,,,
Ok lets see who can pee the farthest…
WINNING!!!
He’s gonna need those 24 inch pythons, brother.
Well, Bye.
Fighting about which branch is better is as dumb as fighting over which invisible man in the sky is better.
I am an AF guy…and I have friends in and from all branches of service. I have worked joint assignments and been deployed with other branches. I have endured ribbing about the AF from everyone, and given my fair share back. (Its not my fault I walked into the right recruiting office after all…)
But to me, its all family. I fight with my biological brothers (And sister) all the time…but in the end we are family. We all work together to a common end, and the strength of my family is my strength.
Although I do acknowledge that there are idiots in every family…
“Its not my fault I walked into the right recruiting office after all…”
Too bad the left recruiting office was the Men’s Room.
I kid.
Everyone in uniform is a brother or sister to me. We rib each other, but the moment some civie comes out to do the same thing, we link arms and tell them their place. We’re family, plain and simple. Families joke, but don’t joke from outside the family.
Yes indeed. I throw my fair share of crap at other branches of Service (I’m Army), but in the end, we all fight, bleed, and die under the same flag for the same Nation.
well said
Passive voice. Nice way to avoid taking responsibility.
(facepalm, shakes head)
WTF ! WTF ! OVER ! !
This entire thing was idiotic from the very start. You can agree to disagree, but there is no reason to come to blows over something like this. Never has been.
I served in the Marine Corps in VN as a Naval Gunfire Forward Observer (0849), was assigned to the 199th Light Inf. Brigade, 1st Air Cav., briefly with 11th Armored Cav., Army Special Forces, the US Navy and Australian Army. I found each of their warriors experienced, effective, well trained and damn good people. I did and would trust my life with any of them as they did with me.
Banter aside, we are cut from the same cloth, Red, White and Blue.
Well said, sir…
So army driver/carpenter kills marine, but ive heard every marine tell me how bad ass they are.
I joke, branch rivalry went out the window in 04. Spent a lot of time right next to the marines, and all of us had our asses saved by the A-10s, and where would we be wit out the navy guys working customs for redeploy in joes?
There’s always something positive to say about every story like this. Such as, at least he will be able to afford a decent haircut in the joint. On the other hand, he can let it grow, finish rounding out his beard, and become the prison bitch…if he is willing to have his teeth pulled.
No matter how badassed he thinks he is, he’ll soon come across others who are more badassed than him, like in the Jim Croce song “Mad, Bad Leroy Brown”.
Baddest man in the whole damn town ! !
Well the two men took to fightin’
And when they pulled him from the floor,
Leroy looked like a jigsaw puzzle with a couple o’ pieces gone…
I lived next door to this man for many years. He is a wonderful, kind hearted person. Yeah, so he has a drinking problem, so do a lot of people. Do yall know that Horn was 1/2 his age, twice is size, and had recently gotten out of prison for a violent crime himself? And that Buddy (Cunningham) had been in and out of the hospital and was in very poor health? And that Horn attacked HIM? It was a clear cut case of self defense. He was charged and convicted because our Justice system is a joke. He helped more strangers than anyone I have ever met, simply out of the kindness of his heart.
