ABC News reports that Karen Bettez Halnon, an associate professor of sociology at Penn State University (so she’s obviously a stank-ass hippie), woke up from her nappie on an American Airlines flight from Nicaragua to Miami and decided to burn some tobacco to protest “US Imperialism”, because that makes perfect sense.
“I felt it was necessary to speak for not only the Venezuelans but the rest of the poor of the world that are constant victims of US military global domination,” she said.

I took a few puffs out of it and then I put it out and then I joked that the guy next to me made me do it, but that was just a joke,” she said. “Every other revolutionary smokes. Fidel, Daniel Ortega, Tomas Borge, Che Guevara, etc. And so that’s one of the significance… to identify with a revolutionary spirit.”
The acolyte of Hugo Chavez (if you couldn’t tell) is worried that the US will invade Venezuela now that the Obama Administration has invoked some sanctions on Venezuelan people.
I hear that the Obama Administration had been planning to invade Venezuela, but the minute that Ms. Halnon touched a flame to that cigarette, they changed their collective mind and called back the 82d Airborne Division which was mid-flight to Caracas. Good job, Karen, good job.
“Imperialism has to stop. And people have to use their voice. We have to act up. It’s necessary,” she said.

I think there’s a small but important difference between trying to ‘convert’ people to a different ideology, and sharing different perspectives.
Perspectives in the plural because while Lars and I may often find ourselves on the same political side of the fence, I’ve disagreed with his take on some of the stories and comments here. It’s worth remembering that behind any label are real people who don’t always fit into singular political roles.

Yes, it sounds trite but my best friend…#1 on the call list when sj croaks, is a black ret LTC Tanker. Came from virtual poverty in rural NC to get to West Point. Smartest guy I have ever known. Best friend I ever had. I think he is a lib but we don’t discuss politics because he is what he is and I am what I am. We find common ground. We discuss more important shit, at least weekly…life. When my bride of 30 years passed…who did I call almost first: him. Who was here when I needed him? Him. Who was with me at Arlington when I buried her? Him.
I certainly appreciate that, TOW, though I think that for some here the difference in attitude towards Lars and myself can be mostly attributed to how we discuss things, not necessarily what we think. Chances are he and I agree on plenty, too.
The way I see it, roughly half the country disagrees with the other half on high-level political identification. You can either claim the other half is crazy, or try to listen to them, as individuals, and hear what they have to say and why. I think the latter is what’s better for the country, and her people, so that’s what I try to do.
Of course, some people -like the nutjob in this article!- just deserve to be tuned out. But half the country does not, in my opinion. I’ve been too busy to follow what Lars has been saying in detail, so I’ll withhold judgement on him for now.
Again, just my two cents – not trying to convert anyone. 😉

I just found that interview on my own and was about to post it here. It’s a perfect example of why I had no interest in any liberal arts other than history while in college. Just walking the hallways in the College of Arts and Sciences was enough to lose brain cells.

Oh! My! Dog! She is completely off her nut. Her statements in that interview are incorrect, e.g., ‘the US has declared war on Venezuela’. Not it has not. And since we have a surplus of oil of our own, why would we want Venezuela’s? BP went to Venezuela in 1994 and started drilling.
Perhaps she should read the real news instead of gossip rags. She may pretend that she knows a lot about Latin America, but I think people who comment on this blog, as a collective, probably know a good deal more about that area than she does.

On her PSU page, she provides some 15 or 16 links to blogs and other sites that linked to it. As you might guess, nearly all of the links are dead, the sites are gone, or her masterpiece is not reachable through them any longer. Cleanup. Aisle 6!

Pretty amusing that someone who wrote a book entitled “The Power of 420” and gets arrested for public drunkenness who later engages in some illogical behavior on an aircraft would think anyone is interested in her world view.
The same tired horse shit about Latin and Central America we’ve heard for decades. Latin America’s problems stem from never having real democracies or engaging economies. Those countries were structured by the ruling elite, for the ruling elite.
The true danger is to the US as we find our own corporate masters doing the same thing currently with trade agreements designed to destroy the US middle class while ensuring those with the most gain even more. That will be how the US fails, from within thanks to the corruption of the government due to the massive amounts money involved.

Basically, the main guy in the story performed an experiment to see how long it would take to get all the necessary permits to open a small business in Peru. From there, he branched out…with interesting results.

Okay, I spent 2 minutes of my life, which I will never get back, watching that video. Either she is a mental case, which is possible, or she is ingesting some kind of intoxicant – I won’t guess what – but she is completely out of control.
I feel some sympathy for the passengers to had to sit next to her, and the flight attendants who had to shut her off, but she has a problem. And she is at the very least an embarrassment to UPenn-Abington. Since those videos are on the internet, they will likely get a lot of views.
People like her and that fellow who yelled ‘jihad’ on a United flight a few days ago seem to be popping up on passenger planes more and more and there is no way to escape them. They’re the reason I detest flying. It used to be fun.
