Brian Williams and his misremembered helicopter crash

| February 4, 2015

I guess Brian Williams has been telling a story for years about the time his helicopter was shot down in Iraq. According to Stars & Stripes, he told that little tale one too many times last Friday;

Williams repeated the claim Friday during NBC’s coverage of a public tribute at a New York Rangers hockey game for a retired soldier that had provided ground security for the grounded helicopters, a game to which Williams accompanied him. In an interview with Stars and Stripes, he said he had misremembered the events and was sorry.

The admission came after crew members on the 159th Aviation Regiment’s Chinook that was hit by two rockets and small arms fire told Stars and Stripes that the NBC anchor was nowhere near that aircraft or two other Chinooks flying in the formation that took fire. Williams arrived in the area about an hour later on another helicopter after the other three had made an emergency landing, the crew members said.

“I would not have chosen to make this mistake,” Williams said. “I don’t know what screwed up in my mind that caused me to conflate one aircraft with another.”

Yeah, one aircraft was shot down and the one he was riding in wasn’t. I don’t know how he could have “conflated” the two events either. I’m pretty sure that the one helicopter crash I was in would always stand out in my mind – not that I’ve ever been in a crash. However I remember a number of rough landings – like that short runway landing in a Caribou that one time. I still get a taste of my anus when I think of it.

Here’s a description of the report that is no longer on the internet, I guess;

Brian Williams report

Clearly the report at the time was about how the helicopter that Williams was riding in was shot down, so, there’s nothing to “conflate”. That was the report. So it was pretty much BS from the very beginning, it didn’t have anything to do with a failing memory.

Thanks to Arthur and the guys at Bring the Heat for the link.

Added from the Washington Post;

[Williams] added, “Because I have no desire to fictionalize my experience (we all saw it happened the first time) and no need to dramatize events as they actually happened, I think the constant viewing of the video showing us inspecting the impact area — and the fog of memory over 12 years — made me conflate the two, and I apologize.”

He continued, “Nobody’s trying to steal anyone’s valor. Quite the contrary: I was and remain a civilian journalist covering the stories of those who volunteered for duty.”

Yeah, well, the broadcast went out as Williams getting shot down, and they arrived an hour after the RPG round passed through another bird. So all of that “conflation” happened in the minutes after the news crew arrived on the scene of a downed craft.

I wonder if he’ll be covering Hillary during the campaign. They’ll have a lot to talk about over drinks.

AW1 Tim

Yup.

Being shot down, dodging sniper fire, hiding Whitewater and WH Travel office files, Vince Foster’s “suicide”…….

It’s so damned hard to keep those stories straight year after year.

Eric

Funny thing about that because I was in Sarajevo in 97 when Slick Willy brought the family to Bosnia for a site seeing tour.

My unit got tagged to provide support personnel to guard “Air Force 1” which was a C-17 at the time with a silver bullet in it.

I was about ready to start sending email traffic to fox about that flub because even in Sarajevo there wasn’t a fly that landed dangerously near them. Let alone they had so much protection around that airport and plane that it was amazing.

She said it was in Tusla, but that airport was on the Div HQ base as I remember. So even more LOL. Sarajevo airport wasn’t on a base, so much more danger there.

Arby

A friend of mine was the pilot of that C-17. He too said nothing happened.

Whoops. I meant the C-17 shrill army said she was in…

I remember hearing that Servicemen and Women were also searched by Secret Service Personnel and ordered to wait out in the rain until ” Blowjob Willie” and the Hildebeast arrived, then they were told to cheer, it wouldn’t surprise me if that was true.

Eric

That actually reminded me.

Units were first looking for volunteers to be “hand-shakers” for the Clintons that Christmas I was there.

More than one unit had to start telling troops they were on handshaking duty for that. lol. And all I had to do was walk back n’ forth along the back of the plane looking menacing and making the president look more presidential.

“I would not have chosen to make this mistake.” Holy good night. Think about that one, will ya? I would not have chosen to make this mistake. The mind boggles. I’ll leave it to Ex-PH2 to dismember, if she chooses.

Ex-PH2

He’s a sloppy reporter, not a good war correspondent, always seems to just miss the events.

There actually was one reporter for another network who was in a helo that got hit by rocket fire, and was badly hurt. I don’t remember his name but I believe he worked for ABC at the time.

Eric

and I recall there was a reporter (Bob Woodruff) and his cameraman who were an imbed with a unit and his vehicle got hit by an IED. He had major TBI from it, that was early 2006 when it happened. I was in the Div TOC when they got hit, just by chance.

But after he recuperated he would go visit troops who got injured, had TBI, etc. Great guy, who was fairly motivating and supportive towards TBIs.

He worked for ABC as well.

“I still get a taste of my anus when I think of it.” The line of the year, thus far.

Ex-PH2

300 meters? Good pilots.

Hondo

Hmm – sounds like a “combat landing”.

I’ve seen aircraft doing those; they’re impressive as hell. But I never got to be on-board an aircraft when it did so. That’s one of my regrets.

Call me crazy, but I always wanted to do that. (smile)

ByrdMan

When we went to Iraq we did a combat landing in a C-130. Gunny threw up in his Kevlar. Good times.

Hondo

Unfortunately/fortunately (both apply), while I was in Iraq the threat to fixed-wing aircraft was thought low enough everywhere I went that fixed-wing aircraft weren’t doing combat landings often (if at all). Oh well.

Was on a rotary-wing bird or two that popped flares while coming in for a landing, though.

CavScoutCoastie

We did something similar in a C-5 going into Kuwait City. All of a sudden it felt like the bottom dropped out and we banked hard. The air pressure increased so fast I was afraid my ear drums were going to burst. I have a lot of respect for C-5 pilots after that. Anybody who can fly a plane that size like they did has a big clanking set. The plane behind us actually had the e-exit implode at 5000 ft. A friend of mine was in that seat and said he had a good view of the city as they went in. I would have had to shovel my pants out.

Hondo

Hmm. Sounds to me like someone was either “hot-rodding” to mess with you guys or missed their approach badly and didn’t want to own up to it/go around for another try. Or maybe ATC screwed up.

As I recall, Kuwait City had no SA threat.

CavScoutCoastie

I think this was legit because all 3 aircraft in our chalk did it. We came over Saudi and were told we’d be blacked out from then till we landed. This was in 2004. What we were told was they were worried old Stingers or SA-7/14’s floating around. The actual threat was probably minimal but this is what they were doing with military aircraft landing there.

Eric

We had a kid in our unit that hated flying. I’d bet money the pilots could smell his fear.

Whenever I flew without him, we didn’t do anything fancy (except the night we almost had a 4-blackhawk collision because IR Strobes were out).

When that kid was in the back, they pulled every move you could think of. Sometimes we’d even see them turn to each other, nod, and go crazy. It was fun for me, I love helicopters. but the looks on his face were priceless. (Especially since he never threw up on us.)

3E9

Assault takeoffs and landings were the norm all over theater regardless of country due to the potential of terrorist MANPAD attacks. Even in Qatar in 04 all aircraft in or out flew the approach as if it was hostile.

Yef

Wasn’t he wearing his helmet?
Combat landing? What’s the meaning of that? There were certainly no C-130s landing under fire in Iraq.

Sam Bowles

that is the perfect understatement. You are a true master of the English language.

Steve

Ah yep, sorry: my bad.

I confused my memories with those of someone completely different. I hate how that happens. It’s weird because I thought they were my memories all along.

I HATE it when that happens. The other week I could’ve sworn that I was the honey badger. But then I ‘remembered’ that I’m not. 🙁

Eric

It reminds me of last week when I was in a threesome with Jessica Alba and one of her hot friends and we spent the whole weekend knockin’ boots. Mmmmm, yeah.

Oh, wait, that really wasn’t me. I must have mis-remembered. Well, no biggie, I’ll tell the story anyway even if no one will believe me…worked for Brianna Williams for years.

cato

He probably got the PTSD from talking about real warriors on the nightly news.

Luckily his credibility was lost well before his PTSD made him lie about the helicopter incident.

I’m surprised NBC didn’t give him a silver or bronze star. POS !

JimW

he did receive some stars, but they melted when he took the wrappers off.

RM3(SS)

Yeah I was conflating a little today, remembering my time flying a B-52 over the Nam, dodging those missiles. Well I was on a submarine, it’s almost the same thing.

Otto

When General Downing had died and they did their “tribute” to him, funny how Brian Williams was in damn near every segment.

JimW

Hard to forget flying on something that crashed or had a hard landing. Not like buying a pack of gum and forgetting which gas station you bought it from. He’s a duffise. Really as a democrat, and former House of Representative from Ohio, you know that he’s not biased on his delivery of the news. Of course trying to hood wink his constituents, or should I say delivering propaganda to the masses about crashing is just something the left does to build there image as a patriot of the homeland. The truth is he’s just a stolen valor thief like bernath!, visconi, wicker or what ever the fuck his name is.

MustangCryppie

Yuppers. Never got shot at, but I was in a few scrapes where my ass puckered so hard I shit diamonds for a week.

Funny how I remember every millisecond of those incidents.

JimW

I was on a C-130 that lost hydraulics, landing gear would not come out. No problem, pull up floor boards and crank them down, gear wouldn’t crank out completely and would not lockout. To someone like me, no idea how shit works in a plane, seem pretty scary. Since we where getting on the low side of fuel. Everyone was taking turns to spin the crank. Don’t forget shit like that. We landed ok. 01/05/75, 13:00, Udorn.

MustangCryppie

One night, landed in a blizzard in Misawa, Japan. In addition to getting knocked around pretty good, the ceiling was very low, so low that it looked like we might have to bingo to Atsugi.

The PPC was damned if he was going to do that. He wanted to sleep in his own bed.

We got down to 200 feet and the ATC told us to wave off, but NOOOOO! We finally broke clear at 195 feet and the runway was in sight. In sight if you looked to your left!

No problem for said heroic PPC. He just banked that sucker over and put her on the tarmac. I swear the wingtip was one inch from the deck. If it had touched, it would have sucked.

Post flight I got to do “plugs and covers” meaning I got to go to the top of the engine nacelle on a ladder and check the oil etc.
One of my shipmates had to put all his weight on the ladder to keep it from blowing off the nacelle.

I almost devolunteered from flight duty that night. But I didn’t and more adventures in pucker exercises followed. Whoo hoo!

2T451USAF

That must happen a lot, because the same thing happened to me in Dharhan in 1994. We took off headed for Al Taif, via Riyadh. We had been in the air for about 30 minutes when the loadmaster started scurrying back and forth through the plane. Then he started running back and forth carrying tools. You know it’s going to be a bad day when the loadmaster is sprinting around the plane with tools in his hand. After about an hour in the air the plane landed, the door was thrown open and the loadmaster started yelling, “Go, go, go! Get off!” The 6 of us got out and ended up standing around on the runway. Turns out a hydraulic line had blown and was shooting fluid all over the engine, causing a shit-ton of smoke. The loss of hydraulics had prevented the gear from going down and it all had to be cranked down by hand. I’m not sure if there was a problem with the crank or not.

Eventually a U30 came out and towed the plane back to hangar. About 10 minutes after that a bus came and picked us up from the runway. I always laugh when I think about how quickly they got the plane to the hanger, yet we passengers were left just standing there.

Bill R

You have news personality Brian Williams confused with former Ohio state representative Brian G. Williams. I think you have misremembered it and conflated the two.

Your right, I should have done my homework better. This Williams was an intern in the Carter Administration. Not the politician from Ohio. I must have misremembered which one I don’t like…..neither.

Plane crashes by pilot error are the reason I took glider lessons instead of power flight lessons.

I thought something was hinky when I saw that crap on TV. I was thinking it was strange how I’d never heard of that incident before. You’d think if Williams or any other MSM personality was involved in such an incident, it would get more coverage than 9/11. Yet I’d never heard of it, which had me wondering about a faint aroma of bullshit.

Well thanks for clearing that one up for me Brian. I had you pegged as an old 11Bravo. By the way, you DID steal valor and you KNEW you were doing so when you started this mess. And what’s with the all of a sudden “humble journalist” routine? Everyone one knows journalists have the hardest jobs in theater. What with all the running around with cameras, crews, equipment (well not the journalist but his lowly paid ass wipers from the network carry everything) plus “getting the real, uncensored story” out to the American people. Pissing on dead Muslims? Now that’s Pulitzer material there. Aircraft full of American KIA heading home…not so much or so newsworthy.

Williams is a lefty featherbain, who, after years of us watching NBC for network news, caused the wife and I to switch over to CBS (and the less offensive Scott Pelley).

Damn, what an outrageous lie to tell for all those years. Yet I guarantee…. as a good member of the leftist MSM, the career damage to him will be zero.

Dmitry was with us in Dora, Baghdad when we were nearly blown up on a patrol down by the market.

He couldn’t believe the frequency and intensity of TICs we had in that lovely slice of paradise, so he asked to stay longer.

He had a scheduled embed up in Baqubah, so I told him to go up and fulfill his commitment because those guys would be waiting for him, and when he was done, he was welcome to come back down and re-embed with us for as long as he wanted.

Finding out the news that he died in a catastrophic IED explosion along with six Stryker troops was one of the darkest days of my nearly 21 years in uniform. Not much more than a day goes by that I don’t think of Dmitry and wonder if he would still be alive had I granted his request and kept him with us.

That’s a real journalist, who saw real combat and didn’t live to report on the experience. Brian Williams would do well to remember that and resign his position for breaking faith with those who truly saw combat.

The answer to your question is that there is no answer. You did not have a crystal ball. Had he not gone, can you say that he would not have been killed in another hour, a day, a week, either by accident, illness, or act of war? Of course you can’t. You had it tough. You don’t need the extra weight. By the way, just looking at his pic, I get the impression that Dmitry enjoyed a laugh or two. I’m sorry for your loss, but it wasn’t you.

PtolemyinAfghanistan

Thanks for that…everyone I know tells me the same, but it doesn’t make a difference.

On the day he left, I took him over to the FOB Falcon Green Beans for one last coffee. He said “You guys have a story that has to be told,” and I said- so does the unit up in Diyala Province- see you when you get back.

I know my actions didn’t lead to his death, but it’s just something I have to deal with. Appreciate it, though.

It is an instant classic. The “get a taste” and “anus” make the simple statement an absolute knee-slapping gem. I’ve all ready shared it and the receivers agree. It is a scream. If Jonn never wrote another line, that would be enough right there.

I quit watching television news a long time ago.

No matter which channel you choose to watch, it’s always the same thing.

It’s all nothing but “politically correct”, government approved, Hollywood manufactured, propaganda from a very obviously controlled press.

As a source of news, the computer Internet is far more accurate and reliable, provided you are skeptical enough to take everything with a grain of salt, and use your wits to read between the lines.

For instance, always ask yourself, “What is it they’re NOT reporting, and why has the story been worded in the manner it is?”

Hey, it’s just “NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR”!

I flew in a C-7 “Caribou” ONE (01) time, which was making a mail run from LZ English to Chu Lai.

Although there was no danger (that I was aware of), I enjoy recalling this particular memory, because in the Hollywood movie, “THE GREEN BERETS”, that was the aircraft that John Wayne jumped from.

So, whenever I see one of those C-7 “Caribou” aircrafts, I can say (as if anyone cared), “That’s an airplane I flew on when I was in Viet Nam!”

Likewise, I enjoy bragging about the ONE (01) time I was privileged to fly on a C-124 “Globemaster”, hauling two (01) UH-1 “Iroquois” helicopters from McChord Air Force Base to be delivered to Gray Army Air Field at Fort Hood, Texas, and then on to Kelly Air Force Base.

At the time, I was a “Military Hop” passenger, and I knew that was one of the last flights the C-124 “Globemaster” would make, as it was obsolete.

What is it about these left wing assholes that can’t just admit the truth and move on?

Instead, how about, “I lied.”

Post-USS Stark receiving two Exocet missiles from an Iraqi F-1 Mirage, we almost greeted a CBS News helicopter (that didn’t identify themselves coming in) with a Stinger. Amazingly, the Stinger crews (which were E-3 at most, on very short military enlistments) didn’t have to wait on the Old Man / OIC to launch; If they determined their target was a threat to the ship, the missile was sent on its way. Later on, one of those Stinger guys spotted a mine in the water, and saved our collective asses from bumping it (going on to be Admiral Taylor’s driver for the rest of his enlistment).

Yeah, that information is twice as old as the details Brian Williams can’t remember correctly…

I have little to no use for nor desire to listen to Brian Williams. Speaking of reporters, freelance or otherwise that actually ran with our troops, David Bloom earned my respect with the 3rd ID. Back when I was in Afghanistan, our FOB had the bone yard that housed a lot of the vehicles hit by IEDs or SAF and were inoperable. I remember looking at one and someone telling me that it was the truck that COL Harrison and MSG Sabalu were in when they were shot to death by an Afghan MP at Pul-e-Charkhi. Somehow, despite my being at Leavenworth at the same time as COL Harrison and probably running into him on post several times, and despite my looking at the wreckage of his vehicle, and despite my riding several times in a similar vehicle near Pul-e-Charkhi, I have still managed not to conflate the two and claim to have been in the vehicle when the two soldiers were killed. Imagine that.

I caught a hop on a Caribou out of Nha Trang back in 1966 and after I took a seat about midway up the fuselage, the best place for a stable ride, if such a thing was possible on a Caribou the crew chief and a couple of G.I.s loaded a wounded prisoner who was restrained to his litter. Right after they’d placed the litter on the deck a small group of SF troopers climbed aboard and took seats near the open rear ramp.

Although he had plenty of runway, the pilot chose to do an STO and as we made the steep climb, that litter began to slowly slide towards that open rear hatch. Every soldier on board sat there watching as the litter approached the SF guys any one of whom could have stuck his jungle boot out there and halted the slide. None did, but the aircraft finally leveled off before Charley could make his cherry jump.

See, Brian? You just never forget such things, even minor little events like that.

Being shot down is like your first sex experience. You remember everything and nothing! Every minute is a mili-second, every mili-second is an hour. If you have managed to survive the initial impact then you have the rest of your life to figure how to survive the impact with mother earth. If you have survived impact with the ground and are still alert, you smell this awful smell. It’s your drawers and your brother in arms that have not made the impact or fall. Years later you wake up in sweat screaming, scaring your wife and dog to hell. A smell, an image, a person, a news story, a flashing light that looks like the Christmas tree lit up on the dash, a claxon alarm going off…that’s all it takes. But those of us out there that have survived one saw his story for what it was… that stuff that materialized in your drawers and stinks.
