LTC Margaret DeSanti; phony Army nurse

| December 24, 2014

LTC DeSanti

Our buddy, Doug Sterner, sent us links to a couple of articles, the first one in 2002 at a Rakkasan meeting (the 187th Infantry Regiment) where this retired Army nurse, Margaret DeSanti, injected herself into an interview with the Kentucky New Era . At the time she was calling herself a “retired Captain”;

Captain DeSanti

That brings us to the present day, I guess she got promoted in her retirement to Lieutenant Colonel and, she’s wearing a Silver Star Medal – which triggered our interest in her. See, Leigh Ann Hester is the first woman since World War Two to earn a Silver Star. But that’s just actual history, not history according to Margaret DeSanti;

LTC, Margaret DeSanti, USA Retired, served in the United States Army Nurse Corps for 30 years. She was deployed in the Vietnam era during the Tet Offensive in Saigon, Pleiku, and China Beach from 1968-1970. She was one of 50 flight nurses attached to the 1st Cavalry helicopters who repelled on dust offs and was deployed to forward positions. She also served during the Desert Shield/Desert Storm for one year. For her service to our Country, she achieved a Meritorious Unit Citation, a Vietnam Presidential Citation, a Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation, a Silver Star, a Soldiers Medal, a Meritorious Service Medal, an Army Commendation Medal, an Army Achievement Medal, an Army Reserve Component, a National Service Defense Medal, a Vietnam Campaign Medal, a Kuwait Liberation medal, an Army Airborne Wings, and Chief Combat Flight Nurse Wings. U.S. Senator John McCain presented LTC DeSanti a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Maricopa Association of Combat Veterans. She is honored to have an Arizona State University nursing scholarship in her name.

But, not according to the National Personnel Records Center;

DeSantis FOIA

The “limited information” that we provided was her social security number. But she was the keynote speaker at this high school’s Veterans’ Day celebration. And, yeah, I can’t find a scholarship that is named for her at ASU, either. I did find one at Maricopa Community College which is the same as ASU, right?

Maggie DeSanti Scholarship

LTC, Margaret DeSanti

Actually, her promotion during her retirement and the Silver Star was enough for me. So, go ahead, call me names for beating up on an old woman.

Fuck her too……just not with my dick…or yours…..or anyone else here. Maybe she can use Psuls.

Perhaps one belonging to a certain PuRpLe-JuMpSuIt WeArInG jErK would be available. Given his attitude, looks, and level of intellect he probably hasn’t had the chance to use it in a decade or two anyway.

The Warrant for her LTC. promotion is in Visconi’s mom’s flooded basement somewhere. You will recognize it by the Edwardian Script.

Perhaps the “dustbuster” would be in order before you did the dirty, just to make sure no cobwebs are hiding out in “hidden” bunkers.

I’m waiting for the not ever a CPO Bernath to show up as her Lawyer.

Ex-PH2

Not to beat a dead horse’s ass, but you’d think that she’d be aware of things like the internet’s ability to keep stuff available like FOREVER. What were the names of her daughter and her two nieces? Where were they located during the 9/11/01 attacks? If on any of the flights, which ones? I have serious doubts about this moocow’s stories. Serious doubts. Does she think people will not look up the names of victims… Read more »

That 9/11 claim is super offensive. I had a relative killed in the Pentagon. And you can look him up all day long. For her to have a claim like that is just disturbing as to the type of person she is. Captain(NAVY) Ret. Jack D. Punches I only met him a couple times but I do remember 2 things about him. He was a Tomcat (F-14) pilot and he had lost his ring finger… Read more »

“To repel is (1) to ward off or drive back, (2) to cause aversion or distaste, or (3) to present an opposing force. To rappel is to descend a vertical surface, especially a cliff face, by sliding down a rope with a device that provides friction. ”

Another stellar work of journalism.

Joe

For the record, I was the one who scribed her speach and when we got to that point, I specifically asked her which one she meant. I was the rappelling CDR. for my ROTC unit, so I know the difference. She told me which one she meant, so I recorded it as clarified. At the time I had no reason to believe she was a phoney. The only thing I don’t understand is, why would… Read more »

Um, she had no amazing achievements. She never served at all.

Don’t forget her claim to be a ‘Chief Combat Flight Nurse’. I know it’s wikipedia, but they don’t list a combat award or a chief rating for the award…never mind the Army stopped using it after 1947.

Gee. In 2010, she was listed here as “Capt. Margaret Desanti, USA (Ret)”.

Must have done something really special to have been promoted two grades on the retired list in just over 4 years. (Yes, that’s sarcasm.)

SJ

Hey, she got a NDSM and a Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross. They don’t just hand those out like candy.

You can buy any medal you want from Medals of America.

Not quite. There is one exception.

Okay, now I’m well and truly pissed off.

7,484 women (6,250 or 83.5% were nurses) served in Vietnam.

If this is a WAC who didn’t make it past 2 years and out, I will not be surprised.

Don H

Never mind the 7484 women– the 15th Medical Battalion of the 1st Cavalry Division had an air ambulance platoon organic to it, with only 12 MEDEVAC aircraft assigned to it. So her story places 4 nurses per aircraft. Where the heck would they put the damn patients? http://history.amedd.army.mil/booksdocs/vietnam/dustoff/chapter3.html (As an aside, they were the only MEDEVAC unit that did not use the callsign “Dustoff” during the war) At peak strength, there were only 900 nurses… Read more »

Too bad she moved from Long Island and is now in AZ, since I don’t live far from her prior location. The school board article in AZ noted that this phony worked as a “traffic control officer for New York’s 5th Precinct”…..that would actually be Suffolk County PD (a very good police agency) on Eastern LI. It’s more likely that she served as a school crossing guard, which is generally a p/t position. I searched… Read more »

I seen this the other day. Embellisher, probably. Someting hinky about no records. Probably under Donnelly I would suspect. I will be very shocked in this case if there is not prior service at all.

That being said, it wouldnt be the first time I was shocked. Semper Fi.

I may have to agree with you on this one; there may indeed be something hinky on this one; she sounds more like an embellisher than an out-and-out poser with no prior service…

Except the information sent in was her Social Security number. I think she is a whole cloth bullshitter.

She’s wearing an Army Good Conduct Medal as her third highest award… seems legit for a LTC.

She couldn’t possibly be lying about three brothers in the 187th and a daughter and two nieces killed in the WTC on 9/11?

RazorbackStrong

At least she’s got an AAM right next to her GCM. Army officers are well known for those two awards. NOT!!!
Finally, the old waynch didn’t go to jump school & her salute is too fucked up for anyone that has ever served.

A Proud Infidel®™

Does she claim Prior Enlisted Service Time? According to one source, “Good Conduct Medal is awarded on a selective basis to a soldier whom while in active Federal Military duty set himself/herself apart from his/her comrades by exemplary conduct, efficiency, and fidelity throughout a set time of uninterrupted ENLISTED active Federal military service.” http://usmilitary.about.com/od/armymedals/ss/gcm_3.htm Could she be lying about her GCM as well? ArmyMedical: an officer with a GCM wasn’t particularly uncommon during Vietnam. Many officers of that era got their commission via OCS and had prior enlisted service. I knew a few growing up. Did anyone ever do an FOIA on her? My point above was that an LTC with 30 years service would have more than two awards superior to a Good Conduct, especially when one of those is a Silver Star. I read above that she “repelled” on dust-off missions? First off, the spelling of that word doesn’t fit but beyond that.

Forgetting any stolen valor claims or accusations, did army nurses actually do that back in Vietnam? I just can’t see that.

Andy, I would think that would be the duty of Air Force PJ’s…..not nurses

Andy Kravetz

that’s what I thought. Thanks. Being a non-military person, that is what stuck out to me. Regardless of medals claimed, what she claimed to do didn’t even make sense to me.

Perry Gaskill

Andy, Without putting too fine a point on it, the reason they were probably called “dust-offs” is because the downdraft of a landing Huey tended to blow dirt all over the place. An alternate name was “medevac” but that term also described the complete wounded transport chain that might extend all the way back to The World. When I was attached to the 173rd Airborne in ’71, the brigade headquarters was at LZ English near… Read more »

Andy, the acronym DUSTOFF was also attributed to the 57th Medical Detachment(Air Ambulance) and stands for Dedicated Unhesitating Service To Our Fighting Forces.

johca

The intent of Dust-off or even a not during an active combat engagement with the enemy medevac is to get the injured onto or in the aircraft. A rappel provides a descent only exit from a hovering helicopter. It gives no means to get injured into or on the aircraft. Furthermore the rope and other equipment to do the rappel would have to be standard mission configuration equipment onboard the aircraft. BTW did the Army… Read more »

Army flight nurses during SEA? – NO,never heard/seen of anything like that. Currently have Army flight nurses? – Again, don’t think so. I don’t believe the current MEDEVAC Blackhawks are set up for in-flight nursing, just emergency care by an aidman (person) while in route to an EVAC hospital. I have never heard of commissioned officer nurses being on DUSTOFF birds as regular crew members.

Eden

I have a family member, former (fairly recent) Blackhawk pilot, who says that there are no flight nurses on Blackhawks–just paramedics.

Ex-PH2

I’m not sure about this but I think the ONLY flight nurses were USAF, not Army. The Navy nurses were on the hospital ships off the coast of Vietnam.

Bubblehead Ray

Not surprisingly neither New York State or Arizona have any record of her being licensed as a Nurse either.

Ex-PH2

If she was in from 1968-1970, she’d have a serial number that starts with B52. (Ask me how I know.) And we girls aren’t that difficult to find. IF she was actually an Army nurse (and I say IF because I have doubts), she’d know how to render a salute properly. Navy nurses knew how to do that, so why wouldn’t she? Not ready to defend this person, but many of us with some age on us have enough issues with arthritis and such that it could easily preclude rendering a proper salute. To embellish ones service, one would have to have served. In her case all FOIA’s have been returned with NO SERVICE FOUND. Using a SSN would be appropriate as all service numbers of members still serving after Vietnam were converted to their SSN. So checking her service by FOIA using her SSN would have come back with any time she spent in the Military.
