Daniel Whitworth; phony in the Virginia NG
Someone sent us a link to an article in the Virginian-Pilot about this Staff Sergeant in the Virginia National Guard by the name of Daniel Whitworth. He tells the reporter about his military career;
First there was Panama in 1989. Then Desert Storm two years later. Next, Somalia in 1993. In 1994, it was Haiti , followed by two tours in Iraq and two in Afghanistan as a contractor.
First it was the Marines for four years. Then the Army for eight. Next, three years in the Texas National Guard. From 1999 to 2008, a military contractor, followed by three years in the Virginia National Guard.
First he lost a buddy in Panama . When all hell broke loose in Mogadishu , he lost a bunch more. In both Iraq and Afghanistan , colleagues were killed. On Feb. 28, 2009, Marine Corp. Donte Whitworth, 22, was killed in Iraq .
Any of these could be the introduction for Staff Sgt. Daniel Whitworth, 45, of Virginia Beach.
In 2011 he is once again heading into battle. This time to Iraq – not far from where his son died – with the Virginia National Guard’s 2nd, 183rd Cavalry as part of the Guard’s largest deployment since World War II.
“It’s when I saw all those caskets. All those wives and their children. That’s when it finally hit me,” Whitworth said about returning from the battle of Mogadishu in 1993. “As many times as I’ve had a muzzle pointed in my face, I always thought about how am I gonna get through this. But seeing them, seeing the ones left behind, you realize what sacrifice is all about.”
Well, it seems that he’s the most deployed Guardsman in history, doesn’t it? So we asked the National Personnel Records Center about his records, they send us the results. The only active duty service that he has is a little less than four years in the Marine Corps from 1984 – 1988. He hasn’t been on active duty since he left the Corps. We specifically asked for any active duty service with the Guard or the Army. You can see in the last paragraph of the FOIA letter that there is none [We’ve verified that he did have some active service in the early 90s that NPRC failed to discover];
You can see that in the picture at the top of this post, from the article at the V-P, he’s wearing a Ranger scroll as a combat patch, that’s a lie. Also, in the below picture he’s wearing a Ranger Tab[We’ve verified that he did graduate from Ranger School in 1993];
So, I called SSG Whitworth. He tells me that he is no longer a Staff Sergeant, that he was reduced in rank to Sergeant because of this article. He tells me that he went to Ranger School and that has been verified by his unit, but I can’t get verification on that, for some reason. He didn’t serve with any of the Ranger Battalions and he admits that the combat patch was phony. He also didn’t serve in Somalia. He claims the only service that he did in the War Against Terror was as a contractor, of course, I can’t verify that.
The “buddy” that he says he lost in Panama just happened to attend the same jump school class, he admits that he didn’t know him much at all.
The Virginian-Pilot has been contacted about their story and their pictures, but they don’t seem to care much about accuracy. He tells me that his unit punished him and that he’s moving forward from here, so we wish him luck, but he shouldn’t have put his phoniness in the public forum – or tried to be something he’s not. So this is a lesson to all of the kids out there.
Category: Phony soldiers
He imagine he was a contractor….for All-Points Logistics.
I hope you made him cry Jonn.
Fony Phuck.
I got the impression that he was expecting my call. He says that he is familiar with TAH and that his chain of command reads TAH. I guess he figured that it was just a matter of time before I got around to him.
That’s a little satisfaction. The Chain of Command keeping an eye out here, that is. Good on the Unit Commander for taking quick and decisive action.
Now if only congress would pay more attention and strengthen the Stolen Valor law.
Then why the hell did he do it? What an ass.
It should be obvious why he did it. He’s a TAH fan and wanted to compete in the tourney
Woo Hoo! Somebody finally faked service in OUD (Haiti), the site of my first deployment!
Is this the first Haiti faker we’ve seen? Seeing as how the Army didn’t even consider Haiti to be a “combat” deployment (no Combat Zone Tax Exclusion and no Combat patch, although we did get hostile fire pay) it baffles me why someone would fake being a Haiti vet although I guess maybe he figured that for that very reason, nobody would think to question it either.
Hell, I know a few guys who really DID go on that mission, all of them said it was nothing they could brag about.
There is a SSG Daniel Whitworth that graduated Ranger School in 1993. Sending unit was 6 ID.
That would track with what he told me. Thanks.
They only knocked him down to Sgt? WTF? They should have knocked his dick in the dirt. I hope they dropped a bar to reenlist on him at least.
I doubt he could find a unit to take him if he tried to reenlist. We had a similar case a few years back (fake Ranger, SCUBA, Force Recon) and when he got out after 16 years the evaluation he left with would set off alarms in any unit he tried to join.
You would have thought the same thing that “Rev-Uh-Rund” Coyler got from the Corps, but that didn’t seem to stop him from trying to join the Guard.
Twice.
And yeah, the Pilot isn’t exactly concerned with the truth, especially when it gets in the way of military stories, either the poor veteran abused by the system, etc., or the scumbags who did something stupid, because, well, only stupid people join the military, right?
I’m guessing that he might have gotten an Article 15; a SSG can only lose one stripe that way.
My guess as well, MrBill. I’m guessing his Reserve unit thought a court-martial would be too much trouble.
Sadly that was probably the case Hondo. During my time in the reserves I saw two guys (SSG and Spc) melt the sample cup. They didn’t even reduce them, just showed them the door. The worst part was that they still got to show up for drill each month while the paperwork wound its way through. We would take off for Knox for the weekend and they would stay at the armory “working” 8 hrs and going home.
I know in my AF Reserve unit we showed you the door once we found out about the test and then you were excused from participation/not allowed to participate until final adjudication.
My experience with the Vermont NG was that everything depended on you being a hunting and fishing buddy with the full timer’s. I even saw a fake bust for SFC to SSG. All he did was wear a different rank for a while. As soon as the chain of command moved on instate SFC. It worked out nice for a senior NCO that was convicted of a DWI, on duty, in uniform and driving his government car.
There is no way I’d fake a Haiti assignment. The risk of getting some rampant disease is still too great to even consider that…
Ha! Well played…
What a complete and total douche. At least his unit has done something with him.
DIPSHIT
Is that a Ranger Tab he’s wearing? Wouldn’t he have to be on Active Duty in order to go through the Ranger Course? Also, wouldn’t he wearing a 75th Regiment Scroll if he’s claiming Somalia and Panama? (Keep in mind I was an Aviation type Squid…so the Army stuff is sometimes confusing.)
ATKron: AFAIK the only Rangers deployed to Somalia came from the 3rd Ranger Batt at Fort Benning. There is a Ranger Regiment scroll but each battalion also has a scroll. So really the only people wearing the regiment scroll would be those assigned to regimental HQ, anyone assigned to one of the 3 battalions would wear their battalion scroll.
Probably should add that I’ve been retired 9 years so this may have changed since then.
Thanks Martinjmpr
Next time I open my big mouth I’ll read the whole article by Jonn.
Not that it makes any difference, but I wonder if he can tell where he was stationed in Iraq when his “buddy” was killed, and what the circumstances were.
If true, and this guy is still a Sgt for his fakery, I’m disappointed like the rest of you.
You know, even though I did nearly half of my time in the Guard I don’t honestly remember how disciplinary actions were handled. AFAIK soldiers on IDT duty (i.e. weekend drills) are not subject to UCMJ so unless the state has some parallel system of imposing disciplinary actions, I’m not sure what they can do. It may be that his reduction in rank was an administrative and not a punitive action but I don’t know.
Maybe someone who is a Guard JAG can jump in here (I’m a lawyer but was never JAG so I don’t know the subtleties of military law.)
Don’t remember how the Guard handles it, but my understanding is the Reserves are subject to UCMJ at any time they are in status including weekends.
Generally speaking, National Guard IDT falls under the state’s umbrella. Soldiers in this case would be subject to the state’s counterpart to the UCMJ. They’d also be subject to National Guard related regulations.
Army Reserve Soldiers on IDT are subject to the UCMJ while doing IDT.
Guard soldiers are title 32 while drilling – when they deploy they switch to title 10 and UCMJ, then back to title 32 when they return.
The story is inaccurate and incoherent. Three ‘Firsts’?
This is supposed to be his son: http://projects.militarytimes.com/valor/marine-cpl-donte-j-whitworth/3975882
I don’t see the family resemblance, nor were they from the same state.
If you Google long and hard, you can find a story where Donte’s father’s name is listed. I didn’t keep the link, but I know it’s out there. He was born in 1988 when Daniel was still in the Marines. Donte’s mother is also a former active duty Marine, so I’m guessing that’s how they met and procreated.
barracks love, ain’t it grand?
That statement has so much more meaning since DADT was repealed.
How does the 2011 VA-Pilot story come to barely mention what would be a life-changing event for any parent, the loss of a child in service? This is crazy stuff and I will be happy to remain confused.
I think you’re more likely to find somebody that was struck by lighting than you are to find a legit Haiti veteran.
Unless of course you browse TAH.
Did Operation Support Democracy off the coast of Haiti not too long after coming back from the deployment that included Somalia.
Yes, we’re a rare breed! 😀
The Virginia Pilot is in my neck of the woods. It’s along one of my jogging routes. Looks like I’ll be paying them a visit with all of these documentations. I know when the article writer reports to work next.
He shows up in AKO as a SGT, so his statement about being a SGT is accurate. I tried to look for other SSGs with his last name, but they had different first names.
6th Infantry Division and Ranger school in the same sentence? They really must have been hurting trying to fill school slots…
What a waste, I’m sure there was a deuce and a half load of speedy fours and 2nd LTs that could have used a slot.
Daniel Whitworth it seems is rockin’ the lie big time! From VA no less. After next week when I get some things in order, I’m going to get a US map and start putting in push pins for the locals of every phoney we catch or have caught and see how it turns out. Different colors for each branch. But then, I won’t know what to do with a yahoo like Daniel Whitworth. Mabve I can find those sparkly colored ones for mutli-branch POSs of ass hattery fame.
My best bet is on Florida leading the way.
Daniel Whitworth is a contender for the 2015 tournament.
So say we all!
This mutha farhker is a douche canoe.
He’ll do less than a year. All of the ABu Graihb retards who caught sentences as long or longer than his were all out in less than 2 years.
dammit did it again….wrong thread , please delete previous comment******
Re the application of UCMJ, unless it’s changechanged from when I went to MPI School in 2010, Soldiers are only subject to UCMJ action while on title 10 orders. Otherwise, it’s just administrative. As far as stolen valor fantasies, I’m looking forward to the first stolen volor of my SFOR rotation.
Reminds me of a guy that showed up to my last unit with a Ranger tab, Ranger license plate and Ranger tee. E5 type just re-classed and came over from Old Guard. After putting the pieces of the puzzle together and him not being able to answer simple questions that anyone who went to Ranger School would know, he finally admitted to the chain of command that he wasn’t Ranger qual’d. They kicked his ass out of the Army within 6 months.
And from TOG.
Funny.
After having been in the Army a while, I stopped complaining I never got credit for OSD. I think I was the only guy in the Regiment at the time that was not on the deployment. The RGT and other BNs came to Hunter to stage (ISB) so they were deployed. I was from 1st and since I had to help them I was not listed as deployed.
It is funny how easy it is to see the fake Rangers, they can’t tell you what was the first thing they ate when they graduated! I had a buddy who got medically dropped from Florida (he even had orders… because they actually generate them when you start), but he would not admit he was qualified, he wanted a tab-less scroll on his ETS plaque.
This story totally confuses me. OK, he was in the Marines for 4. Then an Army guardsman or reservist.. who it seems graduated from ranger school? Some service that NPRC failed to discover?
No idea what to make of this guy… though the unit patch he’s wearing looks like one I saw when stationed in Korea on guys who weren’t 2nd ID.
