SPC Grommet and Matty reunited
Several organizations and social media triumphed in the matter of reuniting Specialist Brent Grommet and his bomb sniffing dog, Matty this weekend, according to the Washington Times;
The soldier had last seen Matty in 2012 at an air field in New Jersey, as the German shepherd, tattooed VO53, was taken away in a crate for processing and medical care.
Spc. Grommet never heard from the Army on the adoption application he had filed in Afghanistan, and began a dogged search. He and his father finally tracked down Matty late last year to an Army veterinary clinic at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
He refiled the application. In January, the unit told him via email: “I have submitted your packet to the chain of command in charge of the [disposition] of Matty. I will let you know when I hear something, they should be in contact with you in the next few weeks. Thank you and have a wonderful day.”
No one contacted Spc. Grommet until he got the shocking news. An officer at Fort Bragg called the soldier’s father to say Matty was gone. He had been adopted.
But all is well that ends well – Specialist Grommet and his father drove to Fort Bragg and picked up Matty over the weekend.

This is good news.
I can see a made for TV movie coming.
Nothing can come between a boy and his dog
I read the headline and immediately thought of this.
so I wasn’t the only one….
No, you weren’t….
Which is why I like this site so much. It’s like there’s always at least one person on the same wavelength. Good stuff.
Me three!
Not at all. I thought the same thing.
I’m glad they were reunited and hope that officer who disregarded Army procedure in lieu of wanting to buddy-up to someone else is removed of his honor.
Oh, thank goodness! I actually cried when I read about this!
Awesome. Nice to see news like this instead of the stolen Valor posers.
dnice…Ain’t it the truth!!!
Great news! Very happy to see this.
A previous story reported that two majors had threatened SPC Grommet with jail if he went public with his story. If true, I hope they get ripped new ones, at a minimum.
I think it would be nice if those Ossifers’ names were made public and they got the shaming they deserve for what they did to that Troop.
Put on RIF list short of sanctuary….that would be some karma.
One of the ossifers involved in the sordid mess that led to the reunion is alleged to be Lt.Col. Richard Vargas, the one in charge of military dog adoptions. Whatever “in charge of military dog adoptions” means.
Grommet had to sign an NDA to keep the name of
Vargas’ friend who got the dogthe family who had Matty, secret.http://nypost.com/2014/11/16/stolen-war-dog-back-in-the-us-and-reunited-with-veteran/
Very cool!
