Friday morning feel good story

| October 24, 2014

This morning’s feel good story comes from Louisiana;

According to police, the suspect has been identified as 46 year old Ramsey Demouchet of Lafayette. Police say the home owner saw Demouchet going into his house in the one hundred block of California Street.

The homeowner was across the street, but he grabbed a gun and confronted Demouchet from outside a window. According to police reports, the homeowner fired two shots through the window.

Police say the suspect Demouchet then ran out of the house, was shot at two more times, before collapsing in the backyard, where he was found by police and neighbor Calvin Francis.

That’s one way to avoid messy cleanups in the house – get him out of the house before he bleeds out. Well done.

There’s a bit more to the story. I’m in the area spoiling grandkids at this time. The news announced last evening that the homeowner is now under arrest and facing charges. The law in Louisiana states deadly force is only authorized to protect life or prevent imminent serious bodily injury, NOT to merely protect property. In this particular case there is no evidence to support threat to loss of life or risk of injury to anyone by the burglar. While I am not in favor of allowing a burglar to do his thing, I can see where the homeowner ran into problems here. He should have called the police since he was off the property and kept watch to help catch the suspect when they arrived. He should never have chased the suspect down and continued to shoot him given the law there. It’s one thing if he had confronted the suspect and then was threatened by same. It’s another to chase him away shooting at him under the circumstances.

I received CCW training in Colorado and Michigan. In both cases, I was told in clear terms that I can shoot to defend myself or someone else from death or great bodily harm but I cannot shoot to defend property. If someone tries to steal my car, they can take it. If they try to run me down they get two in the engine room and one in the bridge.
