Pentagon: more ISIS victories in our future
From the Washington Times, Rowan Scarborough reports that the pentagon is admitting that airstrikes alone won’t prevent more losses to ISIS/ISIL/Islamic State forces in Syria and Iraq.
The Pentagon on Wednesday made the sobering prediction that more towns in Syria and Iraq will fall to the Islamic State in the coming weeks, and that air power alone is not going to be enough to prevent the fall of the Syrian city of Kobani near the Turkish border.
It also raised the prospect of Islamic State terrorists marching on Baghdad, a fear that lawmakers and former top military officials say can only be addressed by ground forces.
Yeah, well as long as those ground forces aren’t US troops, fellas. In fact the Turks are a helluva lot closer than we are, and they don’t seem all that worried about the proximity of ISIS to their own country. In fact, the UN begged them to send troops to Kobani the other day, but I guess they were perfectly comfortable sitting on their hands.
The assessment came before President Obama met with his top military officers and National Security Council at the Pentagon. Mr. Obama emerged to tout his confidence in the progress that coalition efforts are making. He made no note of increasing calls for sending U.S. ground forces, and instead addressed the need to better train and arm Syrian opposition groups that the U.S. hopes will fight the terrorists on the ground.
“This is not something that can be solved overnight,” Mr. Obama said. “Our strikes continue, alongside our partners.”
Since everything turns out completely backwards from the President tells the public, I suppose there are combat forces gearing up right now for their deployment. Personally, I’d prefer Turks because they will be authorized to actually kill the enemy and they won’t be hamstrung by restrictive rules of engagement (ROE) unlike our folks.

Incompetent, irresponible, naive, arrogant, ignorant…. and just plain pathetic. That is about as nice as I can be in response to the current occupant the White House and his utter lack of leadership.
grrr! I hate when I don’t spell check before posting…
This shit is really starting to piss me off. CNN had footage of a column of ISIS tanks out in the open near Kobani, a nice little target for some bombs or Hellfires. We should be incinerating any ISIS formation that stick its head out. What the hell is going on?
When ISIS was making gains this spring/summer I gave the administration a pass. I guessed that they were trying to force Malaki to step down and used US airstrikes as their bargaining chip. Maybe that’s what they’re trying to do with Turkey, but I don’t give a damn. Our President has declared his intention to degrade and destroy ISIS and letting ISIS operate out in the open makes them look strong and us weak.
I won’t stand for that. I won’t stand for this administration’s bungling.
ISIS has tanks? Where did they get a hold of that?
I could see technicals, maybe Soviet-era APCs, but Tanks?
ISIS must be grabbing anything the Iraqi army left behind while they rushed back to Baghdad.
Farflung,
ISIS have pretty much anything a conventional armed force in a Middle Eastern Country has, with the exception of Air. Besides having a huge ammount of fanatical trigger pullers who can somewhat adequetely operate small arms ( AKs, Light and heavy Machine guns, RPGs and mortars) they have several former military in their midst who served in Artillery or armored units.
There are members of ISIS who were trained by, and fought the Russians.
I don’t believe they will ever be able to properly deploy a large armored force, but they can probably get a few tanks together and defeat a group of reluctant Iraqi soldiers who have poor training and no Artillery or air support.
I have a question. Khobani, the beseiged Syrian city that borders Turkey, is under contant attack by ISIS forces. Turkey is doing nothing about it and the US is doing little. My question is this: Where is the Syrian armed forces? Could someone please explain why Syria is not going hell bent for leather against ISIS?
If airstrikes were all that was necessary to win a war, then Germany would have England, we would have Germany, and Japan would have Hawaii.
The greatest military power the world has ever seen controlled by limp wrist sissies.
ANOTHER part of B. Hussein 0bama’s legacy:
THE biggest Foreign Policy FAILURE in US History!
Can someone please ‘splain what the people in WDC/White House are thinking?
Or are they actually thinking?
