AWOL Afghans ask for asylum
Remember a week or so ago that three Afghan officers went AWOL from Joint Base Cape Cod in Massachusetts and ended up on the other end of New York State at the Rainbow Bridge to Canada? Well, now they’re asking for asylum because they’re afraid they’ll either be beheaded by the Taliban or punished by their own government for their indiscretion, according to Stars & Stripes;
Maj. Jan Mohammad Arash, Capt. Mohammad Nasir Askarzada and Capt. Noorullah Aminyar…would be thankful for asylum in the United States, in Canada or in any other safe country,” said Matthew Borowski, a Buffalo immigration attorney who has agreed to represent the three soldiers without pay. “They’ve told me they just want to go somewhere they won’t be killed.”
The men are convinced they will be sent to prison, tortured and killed by the Afghan government if they are sent back to Afghanistan, Borowski said.
If the ultra-violent extremist organization known as the Taliban gets its hands on the three men, their treatment could be just as bad, or even worse, the attorney said.
Yeah, well, they should have thought of that before they left the mall in Boston, I suppose, but those people aren’t known for their far-sightedness.

I’m with you, Jonn. They could have asked for asylum when they got in Country. And whoop der it is!
NO. NO. and NO. Fuhgeddaboudit.
GO. Meet the 72 virgins. They’re waiting, don’t you know?
So joining the Army for the benefits is not only an US problem. Once these guys went AWOL, they triggered the punishment that awaits them, so granting asylum now it would be granted. Well played losers.
Sounds like they thought they’d have a better chance with the Canucks than us. Seems they are probably right.
well, they sucked up all our draft dodgers… why not Afghans?
Sounds to me like they’re simply cowards who are looking for a way out. As officers, I doubt any of them was a conscript.
Not our problem. Send ’em home to face whatever they’ve got coming to them.
Where is Bergdahl? He faded into obscurity? What’s the verdict on an indictment? Where are the answers on why he left his post?
I figured this was more likely than the sleeper cell angle, although that’s likely still on the table. You never know…
Anyway, I rather strongly suspect that asylum didn’t cross their minds until the fifth or sixth lapdance. Obviously this little adventure wasn’t very well thought-out.
I wish y’all could see the surprised look on my face right now.
Oh, poor babies! Liked sniffing the air of freedom and realizing that cab Paki drivers in NYC make more money than they make in Afghanistan, it lured them away, did it? And now, they don’t wanna go home.
Gee, whiz, I don’t know.
Geez, even Russian ballet dancers had better sense than that.
I’m sorry, but you don’t get to ask for political asylum here in this country, while our men and woman are dying in yours… especially when you are Officers in tthat countries military!!
I haven’t been following this story, so I might need some explaining as to why the hostility towards the idea of them asking for asylum.
I mean, if the Taliban would kill them when they get back, I don’t think the right thing to do would be to deport them back to Afghanistan. If we don’t want them, we can certainly hand them off to Canada.
Maybe they should kill the Taliban before the Taliban kills them.
We spent a ton of money on those fools to do a job, they ran away.
You don’t reward that coward shit.
“Yeah, well, they should have thought of that before they left the mall in Boston, I suppose, but those people aren’t known for their far-sightedness.”
I can see it coming now. A FLOOD of Afghanistan immigrants seeking asylum for the same reasons. Of course if Obama opens the door to this, which I am sure he will open as wide as the Southern border, the Taliban will slip MANY of theirs in amongst them.
I know, maybe they can work towards citizenship by joining our military like the President wants to do with our current illegal aliens.
Just what the Democrats need to stay in power. Illiterate Afghans!
This must be their October surprise.
Color me contentious, whatever, but…
We promised the people in that AO that we would not abandon them.
We have abandoned them.
We lied, again, as we’ve lied to each and every indig that wanted to stand up against evil since we started pretending the Korean War was over.
Not every Afghan that’s tried to stand up has been a douchebag. The douchebags gain the press time and the whine time and make outstanding squeaky wheels, but there were also some good people. Those never get mentioned though.
Imo, the fact that these men are convinced that they’re dead men when they go back just might indicate that they’ve already got a rep as not amenable to the douchebagger.
I say let them stay. They’re a hella lot less potential for problems than the 100k or so that the current regime has allowed to flood across our southern border lately in complete and utter refusal to even recognize, let alone enforce, the rule of law.
Oh hell fuck no
The amount of money spent on these worthless chumps is already too high.
Canadia. That’s the ticket. Give ’em a mule and a sombrero each, a few pesos, and send ’em packin’ norf.
