AT season-you have to get your vehicles from the armory to wherever you are doing annual training somehow.
My wife commented on how some of her friends on facebook were commenting on seeing military vehicles on the road the other day. One said something like “all the Army men were standing up (I assume they were standing in the gunners hatches, practicing doing a tactical road march)”.
Anyway, unless they had crew served weapons mounted (I am certain that they didn’t) there’s nothing much to worry about. But, of course, we know that and the average civilian doesn’t.
They are just enjoying the Army version of air conditioning. Summer TDY trips out of FT.Huachuca to places like Yuma and White sands were never fun.
You’ll be pleased (or maybe not) to know that the new variant HMMWV’s all have A/C.
Don’t forget fun places like Florence, Safford, Douglas, Luke, DM, and occasionally a lucky few in Flagstaff

Maybe Pennsylvania guard heading home from somewhere (Shelby?). I watched the video and those were Strykers-Pennsylvania has a Stryker brigade and if they were headed to western Pennsylvania they might have taken that route.

Who would have thought that the Interstate Road System was actually being used for what it was designed for? I blame Eisenhower.
Again, this is what a lack of knowledge of history and an excess of entitlement breeds. People now just ass-u-me that the Interstates were created for their personal convenience and enjoyment – which is a nice side benefit, of course, but not what they were built for.

In case anyone doesn’t get the military applications of having nice wide open streight stretches roads, let me give yah a hint its not so one can see how fast a tank (or your GTO) can do a 1/4 mile. While it is true that the primary purpose of the interstate was for the use of the military in a time of war, the 1/5 rule is an urban legend.

While the Nazis did it with the Autobahn, their road beds our deeper like an actual runway and have anywhere from 24-36 inches of road bed.
From what little this grunt knows, the road bed of most highways in the US is 12-18 inches at most. You would not be able to conduct air operations on the road without causing serious damage to it. Making it impossible for vehicles to use it as well.
Having done Dirt Strip operations with C-130’s and C-17’s I would say that this would be the last, last ditch effort. The Engineering requirements to keep that ‘runway’ serviceable and keep the STS from having a conniption fit would be excessive.
In summation; Interstate Highway: Go for Movement of Military vehicles (what it was MADE for), not so good for fixed wing aircraft.
not to mention big jets require damn near 2 miles runways. And running out of runway is one of those non-negotiable things, like running out of fuel. The consequences are pretty much inevitable.

Pretty funny considering We passed these guys yesterday, but a bit scared I was sharing the road with the knucklehead taking the video. They were a marine reserve unit heading out for training. We were heading out to tennessee for leave and ran into the engineering unit in Corbin, ky fueling up.

I haven’t seen any trains like this coming through where I live, but I do see CSX hauling long lines of tan tanker cars, so I’m thinking they may have a contract for hauling fuel for US military, maybe?
They haul those big enclosed automobile transports between factories and dealerships. And there are the coal-hauling trains that supply the nearest power station to me, 35 miles away.
There’s a lot of freight moved at night. I can hear the wheels clacking on the rails from the lines west and east of my house. I like that sound. it means business is busy.

Back in the 90’s when we were deploying troops to the Balkans, every now and then someone would photograph a train load of APCs painted white with UN markings and the nut-o-sphere would blow a gasket thinking it was an army of UN soldiers, undoubtedly under the personal command of Janet Reno, come to take their guns away.
Of course, this was in the early days of the internet so it wasn’t quite as easy to spread this nonsense and it took a lot longer than it does today.

I’ve convoyed for more than one day before going to AT; you’ve got to have somewhere to secure the vehicles and somewhere for everyone to bed down-but you can do it.
Way,way,back in the day when the NTC at Ft. Irwin was just starting up,our outfits from Ft. Carson would convoy the wheeled vehicles out to there. I was the jeep driver for our Bn Maint Warrant Officer and we finally made it to Ft. Irwin after four days on the road march. Lots of alligators/brush fires to put out along the way.
