Our “less violent world”
The President told a Tumblr discussion group that they’re being too cynical, that the world is less violent now than it has ever been, according to the Washington Times;
“If there’s one message I want to deliver to young people like a Tumblr audience is — don’t get cynical,” he said, Breitbart reported. “Guard against cynicism. I mean, the truth of the matter is that for all the challenges we face, all the problems that we have, if you had to be — if you had to choose any moment to be born in human history, not knowing what your position was going to be, who you were going to be, you’d choose this time. The world is less violent than it has ever been.”
Well, as long as you ignore the fact that after Iraqi cities Falluja, Kirkuk and Tikrit fell, al Qaeda seized two more towns yesterday, according to Fox News;
Police officials said militants driving in machinegun-mounted pickups entered two towns in Diyala province late Thursday — Jalula, 80 miles northeast of Baghdad, and Sadiyah, 60 miles north of the Iraqi capital.
Iraqi soldiers abandoned their posts there without any resistance, the officials told The Associated Press.
Well, maybe in the sense that the Iraqi Army isn’t resisting it’s more peaceful, I suppose.
The Wire reports that Iraq is getting military help from Iran, which seems like a real good idea;
Iran, of all places, has reportedly dispatched two units of its elite Revolutionary Guards to Iraq to help stem the tide of terrorist gains and defend Baghdad from assault.
The two nations were bitter rivals for decades when Saddam Hussein’s Sunni dominated regime was at war with Tehran’s Shiite-led government. After the U.S. invasion, the Iraqi government came to be dominated by Shiite leaders, who now finds themselves under assault from the Sunni militants of ISIS. Now Iran sees Baghdad as a strategic partner, and the ISIS militias as unacceptable neighbors.
The President is weighing options on the Iraq morass according to the Associated Press;
Less than three years after pulling American forces out of Iraq, President Barack Obama is weighing a range of short-term military options, including airstrikes, to quell an al-Qaida inspired insurgency that has captured two Iraqi cities and threatened to press toward Baghdad.
“We do have a stake in making sure that these jihadists are not getting a permanent foothold,” Obama said Thursday in the Oval Office.
How many thousands have died in Syria thus far? Estimates vary between 110,470 and 162,400. Maybe they were tickled to death. Thousands of Africans have been murdered in Africa as a result of al Qaeda insurgencies there.
CNN reports that Russian tanks have rolled in the Ukraine;
Three Russian tanks and other military vehicles crossed the border into Ukraine on Thursday, prompting a skirmish between Ukrainian and Russian forces, acting Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said.
The Russian Foreign Ministry told the BBC that the claim was “another fake piece of information.”
According to Avakov, tanks crossed the border at a checkpoint controlled by pro-Russian separatists in the Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine. Armored vehicles and artillery were part of the columns, Avakov said, citing Ukrainian intelligence.
The Obama Administration has released a dozen more terrorists that the US held in Afghan prisons back into the wild;
A U.S. defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that a Frenchman, a Kuwaiti and 10 Pakistani prisoners were sent back to their respective home countries at the end of May.
So, I’m sure that adds to our peaceful world, especially in the long run.

Yeah, I get a little more cynical each time I have to listen to obamao’s fermented bullshit…
This is the same guy who claims that Obamacare will help the economy and make us all richer, that gun control is a good thing, that the sky is fslling because of global warming, that Bergdahl is a great soldier, that Common Core will make kids smarter, that Chicago is a model of civic pride and public safety, and that he runs the most transparent government ever. The Glorious Leader can kiss my ass.
Have faith, brethren! A new age is dawning! The moon is in the 7th house! Jupiter has aligned with Mars! Peace shall guide the planets! Love will steer the stars!
SLAP! (shakes head vigorously, blinks eyes)
Huh? What the . . . ?
Oh, sorry. For a moment there, I think I was channeling a speech by our Skittles-eating, unicorn-riding “Fearless Leader” who is so “completely in touch with today’s world”.
Or maybe I was thinking about some old 60s hippie music from a musical with a famous last scene. Both make about the same amount of sense in the real world today.
Hondo…So you think this is the “dawning of the age of Aquarius’? 😀
Obama is so out of touch with the world he leads the greatest nation in. It is a far more dangerous place now. Last night I heard Hillary say as she used here wave off hand gesture that, “these five guys we released are no threat to America. They may be a threat to stability in Afghanistan and Pakistan but not to us”. Another dumb bitch with blinders on. Oh she sees and she knows the REAL truth of their danger. But she is gearing up for 2016 and needs to back the party and make nice for her voters. The Americans who WILL die, as a result of these five being freed is when she and Obama will come out with the “shocked faces” and blame shifting. After all it was Bush who out them in Gitmo and probably water boarded them into hatred of America.
Sparks: She must be basing her statement off of the fact that the five who were traded hadn’t committed any crimes of violence in the last five years.
Well, it’s a less violent world, unless he’s on another kick to take our guns, and then he blathers on about record number of school shootings or some other such bullshit.
apparently it is less violent everywhere else, and blood runnin’ in the streets here. The man looks at the world through a photographic negative or something. (No offense, PH2!)
I wonder if I can get my old CHU on VBC again?
Oh, so now he can fire all of those Secret Service agents, right? I mean, if the world is less violent, he doesn’t need all that protection, and that money can be put to good use elsewhere?
Yeah, I’m sure he’ll get right on that. Pffftttt.
Oh. My. God.
What planet is that asshole living on?
His statement about the level of violence in the world should, by itself, leave no doubt that this is a man with severe mental health issues. Delusional, pathological liar, psychotic, completely detached from reality, and an assortment of other possibilities, none of it indicative of being capable to act as the named leader of this country.
OWB, I honestly believe he has listened to all of the BS hype the media has thrown out there to play him as the second coming, that he has started to believe it himself.
Well, he DID get a Nobel Peace prize simply for showing up. Or something. 😉
Same with most everything else. Can anyone really blame him for just sitting back and enjoying the living large part of his job? But, that hardly exonerates him from the crimes he has committed and the utter disdain he shows for this country. It’s very sad for all of us that we are being destroyed from within.
Cmon huys. Don’t be so hard on President Snowflake. He did get the Nobel Peace Prize after all.
And if you racists don’t stop criticizing him, he’ll launch a drone up your ass.
I’m not racist. I don’t like the white or black half of him,, equally
I didn’t know they had a category for cluelessness.
As much as I despise our Commander in Chief, I think I have an even bigger problem with the portion of the population stupid enough to vote for the guy.
Yeah, but you get free cell phones!
What ever reason is there to vote?
Well, the president is right, at least in one sense. As Steven Pinker spends six substantial chapters documenting in “Better Angels,” those alive today are much less likely to to suffer from violence and cruelty by the hands of others — be they family members, neighbors, rival tribes, your state, or other states — compared to any previous era of human existence. That is inarguable.
Not that the data couldn’t be read to say violence has been merely nationalized or “comes less often, but with deadlier results”; and there is something problematic about using per capita measurements (e.g., it seems obscene to say the Holocaust was half as violent if Germany’s population had been twice as high). And, as always, past performance is no guarantee of future results.
“That is inarguable.” If that’s not an opening for an argument, nothing is. Lies, damn lies, and statistics. I would like to see the study–the whole study–that concludes that human beings are less likely to suffer violence today than any other time in human history. Let’s just start with the word today. Is that June 13, 2014 or the year or the decade or what?
Well (again), go buy Steven Pinker’s “The Better Angles of Our Nature” and have at it.
“Lies, damn lies, and statistics.”
No doubt you blame words for the lies they tell, and guns for all the people they kill.
Ya know, I was going to ignore your earlier ignorant comment, but ya just had to go there.
You and your ass can just move along – I would suggest rather quickly. Who exactly do you think you are to come in here making demands? You can be rather assured that the book you insist that we read (what, are you getting a commission or something?) will remain on the bottom of my reading list for a very long time.
Mutter, mumble, &$*#@.
Ah shucks, sorry mister. I didn’t know I was playin’ on your lawn. (I honestly have no idea if you’re kidding; so, in fairness, Mr. Cav did ask for the citation.)
Also, in the interest of full disclosure, I have indeed met with Steven Pinker. Specifically, I asked what floor he wanted. He said seven. I pressed the button. I have received no royalties thus far, however, for my part in the publication process. Sorry for the omission.
It was your use of the term inarguable that was offensive and rather arrogant. There are very few things which are inarguable. Evidently you are not able to argue your own side of the issue, so you resorted to a personal attack.
Oh, well. So much for engaging in adult conversation.
It would seem to be very arguable given this review and the comments following: http://www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/magazine/john-gray-steven-pinker-violence-review/#.U5vFbeko7bU
Nice try though.
Did you read what Gray said? I assume not, since the argument here is whether Pinker’s data — that there is now less violence in the world — is accurate, and Gray does not challenge that data. In fact, he apparently assumes it to be the case. At most he posits that there’s hidden violence lurking all over, namely that the peace in the larger world relies on the oppression of the have-nots (Gray, incidentally is a way-leftist troll). What Gray really disputes is why we as a species have become to less violent (i.e., the recent outbreak of nonviolence is a fluke).
You lost me at “assume”. GFY.
The President can only be cynical when it comes to his pals portraying false statistics to negate constitutional rights in America.
Otherwise when the world is burning and Americans are dying, everything is A OK.
Classic Libtard in action.
“The world is less violent than it has ever been.” (Emperor Baracka)
The world is as violent as it ever has been, what with earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, cyclones, tornadoes and so forth. If he–the foreign policy expert, the economic expert, the global-warming expert–is saying that mankind is less violent than it ever has been, WTF has he been snorting–again?
You are all giving bodaprez far too much credit for things like delusions, etc.
I think it’s much simpler: he is completely out of touch with the real world, has been that way for some time, wrapped in cotton balls or styrofoam – something that insulates him from the real world and its harsh realities.
I may be stretching it a tiny bit here, but I think it’s fair to say that he’s barely smart enough to string more than one word together in a sentence. If you’ve seen him responding to questions or doing an interview, his ability to speak without scripted material that he can memorize is severely limited. This little ‘feel-good’ spitchifying he dispensed underlines what I’ve said. He says whatever he’s told to say.
I truly believe now that he is SO dumb, he can’t even tie his own shoelaces without written instructions.
So please don’t give him credit for being mentally ill or anything else like that. It’s an insult to those poor souls to be lumped in with that asshole.
I don’t even think B.hussein 0bama could even tell you if it’s a sunny day without consulting his teleprompter!
Ditto! I think he’s still trying to figure out why he has two left wing shoe strings. Now if only he could figure out to use them with a shower bar…
I’m so embarrassed he is our president.
