Police officers push Vietnam vet home

| May 30, 2014

ChipNASA sends us a link to a story where two San Diego cops encountered Vietnam veteran Gil Larocque broke down with his power scooter at a busy intersection. The officers did the only thing they could;

“You wouldn’t expect them to do something like that, push you all the way home,” Larocque said.

But that’s exactly what San Diego police officers Milo Shields, a veteran, and Eric Cooper, the son of a veteran did, when they saw Larocque struggling, trying to flag down traffic in the hot sun.

“I appreciate what they did, they went out of their way. How many people would stop?” Larocque asked.

It was a lot easier said than done, as there were some hiccups along the nearly two-mile route, pushing Larocque and a dead scooter that weighed more than 300 pounds.

1. No way that scooter weighs 300 lbs
2. Even if it did cops can’t deadlift 150lbs to put it in the trunk?
3. Work smarter not harder, gents.

David

combined weight – hell yeah. A lightweight scooter goes at least 50 pounds, and the ones that are rated to hold 500 pounds probably easily go double that.

You ever seen the trunk on a typical cop car? Damn things are packed to the gills with oddwad crap.

The Other Whitey

Maybe so, but still pretty damn cool of them to do it either way.

Ex-PH2

Well, that was truly a nice thing to do for Mr. Larocque.

Way to go Officers. That’s the way to Protect and to Serve! Thank you guys for helping Mr. Larocque.

Too often the serve part gets lost today. I hated being a cop because everyone I worked with thought it was their job to ruin as many people’s day as they could every time they came to work. Had I worked with guys like this, I probably wouldn’t have quit. These guys went well beyond anything they were required to do and an example that everyone with that uniform should follow

San Diego has a pretty large conservative and veteran community, Major Navy and Marine installations there.
Its a definite change from most of the peoples repuplik of kalifornia.

The Other Whitey

A definite change from Humboldt, Berkeley, the Gay Bay, and the cesspool known as Los Angeles. A lot more like the other 3/4 of the state. Like I’ve said before, most of us didn’t put Nancy Pelosi in office. It just so happens that those 4 enclaves (and Imperial County, AKA Little Sinaloa) wrote the book on voter fraud.

Thanks, officers! Well done.

Very well done, officers! Now about that power chair being light? I got a dead one out here at the shop. Who wants to come show me it weights 150lbs?

MCPO NYC USN Ret.

The batteries alone weight 150.

I borrowed one from a buddy to play a joke a few years ago.

Everyone knows at work I have a bad back. So this day, I went to the 30th floor and borrowed by buddies powered chair. He arrives earlier then me every day. So I travelled down from the 30th floor and the doors opened on my floor. George was there when the doors opened … He laughed at me so I gunned it and ran over his foot. I yelled back at him, “it is not nice to make fun of those with disabilites”. As I travelled down the hallway to my cube I was yelling, “make a hole, coming through”.

I was smashing into everything and told Jimmy who is next to me to, “grab me a cup of joe”. He told me to ef myself so I asked him, “well can you grab me some Chineeze food for lunch”?

The fun wore off after about an hour … I needed my coffee.

In my Mom’s neighborhood there is a Vet with a Purple Heart and CAR (Marines, I think I got that right) he has a broken neck and no movement from the neck down. He is always out in a power wheelchair visiting people or just riding around. Their neighborhood is a private one that it mostly untouched wetlands and you can only buy in 5 to 10 acre plots. Most everyone knows everyone but I’m always shocked how many people drive right past him on those dusty dirt roads without slowing down or offering to check on him. He’s been stuck a few times and sat for hours with no help. My parents had their home renovated to make visiting easier for him, while others ignore him. The astronaut Story Musgrave and I had to help him home one day. But trying to keep that man at home is like trying to keep any other bored man at home. Great man with wonderful stories (Jose and Story both) there is some amusing people out there.

A movie was just finished that was filmed at my parents just look on YouTube for “The Witches Island” and you’ll see it mostly looks like a jungle out there. It was a good thing these police officers did for that gentleman, I know from experience pushing one of those chairs isn’t easy, on a road or through dirt. Glad to see a story about good people today.
