All guns are always loaded. Even when they aren’t loaded, they’re loaded.

| February 26, 2014

So this guy in Oakland County, Michigan was showing his girlfriend how safe his guns are when he shot himself in the head. The only important part of the story is this;

Alcohol appears to have been a factor in the shooting, according to the sheriff’s office.

Darwin at work…

Pinto Nag

A neighbor of mine did the same thing years ago. Christmas morning. Whole family watching. Got the gun for a Christmas present.

Toasty Coastie

Well now, its that just a fine example of brilliance..

Altogether now:

@2 Pinto Nag

Well isn’t that a bummer.

Really sad

D’oh!

Pinto Nag

@5 He wasn’t a friend — just a neighbor. These kind of incidences weren’t uncommon in that house. The local cops almost spent more time there than they did in their station.

Just Plain Jason

I always tell people if they are pointing the end the bullets come out at you, they aren’t your friend. If someone is dumb enough to point the end that the bullets come out of at themselves, tell them don’t do that. If you don’t know what you are doing with a gun, don’t touch it. If you don’t know if a gun is loaded or not, it is loaded. For fucks sake it isn’t rocket surgery…

Any photos?

Geeze … Just askin’!

Why am I not surprised . . . .

MAJMike

Which reminds us that only the police are professional enough to possess firearms.

Keep the booger hook off the bang switch.

@11 MAJMike

Unh huh…..

A Proud Infidel

Has the decedent been nominated for a Darwin Award yet? I wonder if his last words were something like “SEE? Ain’t nothin’ gonna happen-*BANG!*”? A lot like those whose last words were something like “HEY, hold my beer and watch me do thi-OOOOOH, SHIIIIIIIIIIT!!”

Ex-PH2

All guns are always loaded. ‘Nuff said.

Atkron

At least he didn’t kill his girlfriend…that would have been the real shame. Other than that, one less piece of stupid walking amongst us.

Fjardeson

A classic candidate for a Darwin Award. Dumb, dumb, dumb!

Geetwillickers

Trying to find that story from a few months back about some NCO who shot himself with an M-9 trying to demonstrate how it wouldn’t fire if you pressed in on the barrel…

My Google-Fu must be weak today.

Anyway, what Col Cooper said…

@15, well, she is, or was, his girlfriend. Doesn’t say a whole lot for her mental acuity.

Nik

I kinda have to applaud the guy for demonstrating a rather important concept.

Unloaded guns are to be treated no differently than loaded ones.

Bravo.

Richard

I have this little drill that I do. For a bolt gun or an AR, I open the bolt, look into the chamber, then stick my pinky finger in there. If I can reach into the chamber without hitting brass, the weapon is clear. For an AR I remove the magazine and leave the bolt locked back. For a bolt gun, I remove the bolt because a bolt gun without a bolt and no brass in the chamber will NOT go bang.

With an AR in the field, I use the safety – cocked and locked, safety on. At the bench, I lock it open and remove the magazine. When hunting with a bolt gun, I use the safety but I don’t trust it. According to the Colonel, “never point a weapon at something that you are not willing to destroy”.

For a 1911, in order to verify that it is loaded I press-check. In order to verify that it is clear, I drop the mag, cycle the slide, lock the slide back, sight-verify that the chamber is empty, and stick my pinky finger into the chamber.

Any weapon not KNOWN to be empty is loaded.

One other rule, I do not touch weapons after touching alcohol.

I have been doing it this way for about 50 years. So far, no ADs.

Army ATC

A moron, alcohol, and a gun. The outcome was preordained.

Army ATC

@18 Geetwillickers, That’s the 1911. Push back on the slide and barrel and it jams the sear, not allowing the hammer to fall. IIRC, wasn’t the M9 the handgun that the slide could be yanked off of?

Geetwillickers

A23 Army ATC – you may be right, and I may have been imagining the entire thing, since I can’t find a single mention of the incident I am thinking of anywhere.

Anyone else remember an NCO giving training to a group of joes who wanted to demonstrate how a pistol (M9 or 1911, whichever) wouldn’t fire if pressed up against something. So he presses it against the chest of one joe, and all is well so he doubles down by pressing it to his own head and…

Or did I dream the whole thing?

Army ATC

Geetwillickers, It may have happened with the M9. I just don’t remember that particular handgun being malfed that way. I know it works on the 1911. It wouldn’t surprise me that someone tried it with the M9 though. Stupid people do stupid things.

Beretverde

Those “unloaded” weapons can sure phuck you up.

Geetwillickers

Well, either my Google-Fu is utterly gone today, or I imagined the entire thing. I will post it if I find it.

Meanwhile, I will go home and NOT get drunk and teach anyone gun safety.

That is all.

HS Sophomore

Ah, firearms. Removing stupid people from the gene pool at a rate second only to cars.

The Other Whitey

Reminds me of an incident I responded to in which an inexplicably-armed hippie blew a hole through his hand and kneecapped his hot wife across both legs, luckily with snakeshot. I think I told that story here once. It’s a long story that’s simultaneously funny as hell and exasperating in the sheer stupidity involved.

I’m staunchly pro-2A, and I also can attest to the fact that some people should never, ever be armed.

SGT Ted

We have an early front runner for the 2014 Darwin Awards this year.

SGT Ted

IIRC, wasn’t the M9 the handgun that the slide could be yanked off of?

Yes. I had a police hand-to-hand instructor demonstrate it to me once. It was a pretty cool trick, but you’d have to practice a lot, a lot, a lot to get good at it.

The Other Whitey

@31 But Jackie Chan made it look so easy…

David

when you press back on a 1911 slide you take the slide out of battery, you are not jamming the sear.

Elmer Keith once busted a Colt demo, supposedly you could lean back into a .45, keep the gun out of battery, then spin and grab it. Even with one of the fastest trick shots in the world doing the pushing and spinning, Keith consistently “killed” him.

ExHack

Yeah, I read this on Huffpo last night. Gave some dedicated lefties another excuse to hate on black rifles and standard cap mags, and claim the only way to have gun safety is not to have gins around. Glad those guys know their limitations, as Dirty Harry would say.

ex-Army doc

Adding “Alcohol appears to have been a factor” to the observations credited to Mr. Obvious.

The next one is “The deceased, according to state troopers at the highway accident scene, was not wearing a seat belt.”

cannoncocker

Another thing that stuck out at me was at the end of the article they briefly mentioned another fellow who had a ND into his wife while cleaning his loaded gun. Who the double retarded monkey phuck is cleaning their gun while it’s still loaded? Luckily the dude’s wife lived and didn’t die for his stupidity.

Richard

@36 – she could have checked that the piece was still “empty” and helped him clean it. 🙂

Many years ago I lived in a little town in Southeast Alaska. One of my married friends started chasing girls. While she was cleaning her pistol in the kitchen his wife shot him. The bullet ricocheted off the chopping block in the kitchen. He did not die but he did move out of the house. A few years later, the same lady was cleaning the same pistol and ricocheted another bullet off the same chopping block into a boyfriend. He did not die. I no longer lived there but rumor had it that the local cops (who were also friends) suggested that she either be a little more careful when cleaning her pistol or try to develop better taste in men. It was a small town.

B Woodman

I hope he was cleaned out of the gene pool before he had the opportunity to pass along his stoopid genes to the next generation.

Joe Williams

Brooze and firearms are a deadly mix. A topic but still in the stupid things. I closed on my house Today. One of the things I had to agree to(ready for this)I would not have a METH LAB on my property. Joe

Doc Savage

Bet he wont do something that stupid again.
