Maliki’s wish list
The Washington Post reports that Iraqi Prime Minister Maliki has given a ‘wish list” of weapons and training that they’d like to get from the US;
Still, the prime minister said he had no regrets in forcing U.S. troops to leave Iraq in 2011, despite the situation that has unfolded in Anbar since then, with the province’s two main cities sliding into the control of insurgents. He spoke in an interview in Baghdad.
Iraq’s military is working with pro-government tribesmen in Anbar to attempt to secure Ramadi and Fallujah, which have been seized by the al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. The extremists have been joined by some Sunni tribesmen from the province who oppose the rule of Maliki’s Shiite-led government.
The United States is working on providing medium and light weapons, including another shipment of Hellfire missiles, Maliki said. He said that he submitted the wish list after a phone call with Vice President Biden on Tuesday.
I guess they’re hoping that the training will take place in Jordan and Iraq, but that would require boots on the ground for security of the trainers. I’d find it acceptable if they bought the Iraqis that they want trained to Fort Benning or Fort Polk or some other post in the US, that’s the only way the trainers would be safe. As it was demonstrated in Libya, we really can’t depend on local security forces. But I don’t think even Jordan would be safe between Syria and Iraq.
Well, and any troops that we sent to the region really can’t depend on the politicians to protect them.

With al-Quaeda’s gains in recent years, and all the corruption and populist dissatisfaction with the government, and al-Quaeda throwing all their resources at it, there’s just no way Iraq is up to the challenge of a long counterinsurgency. God, I pray we don’t have to go back in there…

I would even be concerned having them here for training. Who’s to say they wouldn’t see a great opportunity to get onto American soil and slip in a sympathizer or two amongst the trainees. No boots on the ground in that area ever again. I hope and pray.
Once they booted us out after going above and beyond to rebuild all their shit, training, and equip them instead of simply rolling their faces and leaving a note saying “try it again, we’ll be back” we should have noticed the charade.
Don’t care any longer. They need to figure it out entirely themselves at this point.

If Maliki publicly said he made a mistake in kicking us out, they would have his head. They don’t admit to failure around there and Maliki initially gained his support base by picking fights with us on security matters as soon as he took office.
If we were to train them here, I don’t think the Iraqis sneaking sleepers into the US would be the problem. The real issue would come when half the class requests asylum. We had an Afghan LT in my class a few years back and during the Thanksgiving break he skipped town and got on a plane to Germany where he had family.
