1400 armed robberies in gun-free DC last year

| January 5, 2014

Chief Tango sends us an article from the Washington Post which sheepishly reports that there were nearly 1400 armed robberies reported in the liberal utopia which is our nation’s capitol.

The number of gun robberies in 2013 was 97 fewer than in the previous year, a drop of more than 6 percent. It was, however, about 11 percent more than the 1,261 gun robberies reported to police in 2011.

Robberies, particularly those involving weapons, are often considered a key measure of crime and safety. More numerous and widespread than slayings, they have a strong effect on residents’ perceptions.

The only thing that surprises me is the fact that the Post actually reported this crime rate. The Post and the Metro PD are proud of the fact that the murders were down to 104 last year, but if gun control was working, it should be “0”, shouldn’t it?

The District banned guns from it’s streets in 1974, but their police still recover about 2,000 guns every year mostly from criminals, but also from gun buy back programs.

And, oh, this week, the District’s legal gun owners are lining up at their local precincts to be fingerprinted like common criminals for reregistration of their firearms. From the Washington Times;

In the District, firearm registration renewal will cost gun owners $48 regardless of the number of guns they own, according to police. The reregistration is completed when the gun owner is fingerprinted, pays the renewal fee, passes a criminal-background check and submits a renewal form that confirms the owner’s home address, the serial number and type of gun owned, and answers a series of questions about their fitness to own a gun.

Meanwhile common criminals will likely avoid the process.

“And, oh, this week, the District’s legal gun owners are lining up at their local precincts to be fingerprinted like common criminals for reregistration of their firearms.”

Maybe if they were as serious about registration for voting that we could avoid a lot of voter fraud, too? I consider voter fraud and illegal voting to be more destructive to our country than registering your firearms.

@2 Old Trooper, thank you, thank you, thank you! In my state they almost encourage illegal voting and voter fraud. They make it as easy as possible for illegals to “motor vote” in local and state elections.

Hogwash!!! DC is a gun free zone, this is impossible!! I mean…that’s how it works, right guys? 😐

Eric

It must just be the gang problem, like in Chicago…

A Proud Infidel

Gee whiz, why won’t those nasty criminals register or turn in their guns? /sarc

That just goes to show that Gun Control Laws and the politicians that pass them do little more than aid, abet, and embolden violent criminals by assuring them that law-abiding people will be conveniently unarmed VICTIMS!

But, golly, law-abiding citizens’ guns are the ones DC Police (you know, the dudes in bike helmets who were preparing to club veterans demonstrating about closed memorials during the shutdown when the U.S. Park police left well enough alone until someone realized they’d be on TV) can control!

CI Roller Dude

So let me see if I understand this….the honest gun owners have to pay more and jump through more hoops to keep the guns they already legally have…but the criminals don’t have to do anything.
Why don’t they pass a law that requires all criminals to turn in their guns? Wouldn’t that work…just like the tooth fairy and the Easter Bunny???

DC has about 4 robberies with a gun every day and about 8 other robberies every day. Seems to me that DC has a pretty small land area. If I was the police chief, I would start looking outside the box because whatever they are doing isn’t working.

I googled UCR (Uniform crime reporting) and looked at the crime data for 2012 — that is the most recent data that I saw right away.

Robberies in 2012
Washington DC 3,725 or 589 per 100,000 residents
City of New York 20,210 or 243 per 100,000
City of New Orleans 1,065 or 293 per 100,000
City of Chicago 13,476 or 497 per 100,000
City of Portland, OR 950 or 159 per 100,000
City of Detroit, MI 4,843 or 685 per 100,000

So Detroit beats them but Chicago is close …

FWIW, I wonder if those statistics include the really large robberies that happen every day in the Capitol Building and Whitehouse?

Too snarky?

THIS is why I live in Alexandria and not DC

@9, a lot of the numbers depend on how the crime is coded by the reporting agency. I wonder how many robberies where the perpetrator used a hand in a pocket in lieu of a gun were coded and reported as a larceny or unarmed robbery. I’ve seen it done, so there is probably some of that hidden in those cities’ crime reporting.
I know a few Detroit PD officers, and I know that a lot of the armed robberies in that hell-hole never make it into their “crime reports”.

The Other Whitey

I’m almost curious to hear Harry Reid, Piersofshit Morgan, that asswipe “LTC” Bateman, and their drooling minion VWPoser explain this away.

OWB

Obviously, it just didn’t happen, because, like, ya know, they talked about it, and that is the same as doing something, no matter how insane the “solution” might be. Besides all that, if they could just disarm all the honest people, then they could ride off into the sunset on unicorns, eating skittles, and all would be well. Wearing hoodies (rainbow striped) is optional.

Does anyone remember how the DCPD was scrutinized for using unreliable statistics in reporting crime statistics to the UCR? I seem to recall stories like this one:

and this one, which pretty much sums up the same thing:

“Kevin Lewis Crouch walked into a tow lot in Northeast Washington on Tuesday afternoon and asked about a green car. But D.C. police said the 22-year-old man quickly pulled a gun on the tow truck driver who was trying to help him and demanded money.

The driver began to run but tripped and fell, police said, and Crouch struck him twice in the head with the butt of his gun. The driver then heaved his wallet against a fence in the lot on Kenilworth Avenue.

As Crouch went to grab the wallet, police said, the driver climbed into his white Isuzu tow truck and then fatally struck his assailant. On Wednesday, the victim of the armed robbery became a criminal suspect, as police charged Corey D. Stoddard, 35, of Northeast Washington, with second-degree murder while armed, his tow truck being the weapon.”

That’s right. The victim is charged with murder.

Jabberwocky.

@15, some addtional info on the ute who was run over. “Crouch, who lived in Southeast Washington, was convicted in 2009 in a carjacking in Prince George’s County, online court records show. He was 17 when he committed the offense and was held as an adult. Prosecutors dropped several gun and assault charges as part of a plea agreement, court records show. He was sentenced to four years, which were served in a youth facility. How many years should he have done, if the “gun and assault charges” had not been dropped?

FatCircles0311

How is any of that shit constitutional? I see shall not be infringed not abunch of government stamps and requirement to exercise your rights written as precursors instead.

This country is becoming pretty ridiculous.

The Other Whitey

@18 Now why bring up something silly like that? Dontcha know the lefties are on a righteous crusade? They’re doing this for our own good! We backward plebeians might hurt somebody with those scary guns! The benevolent overlords only want what’s best for us! The peasantry isn’t smart enough to look after their own well-being…

That last part was from an actual opinion piece I saw a while back, wish I could remember where, from some libtard lamenting the fact that the whole country didn’t unanimously elect the Glorious Leader Obama in 2008. No joke, this assdouche actually said that lower and middle-class Americans who didn’t vote for the messiah were “sadly ignorantly voting against their own best interests.”

Like this smug bastard knows what’s good for you because he’s a Goddamn liberal…actually now that I think about it, isn’t that pretty much the core idea of Marxism?
