USS San Antonio

The USS San Antonio has joined the carrier groups off the coast of Syria. The USS San Antonio is an amphibious ship designed to land 800 Marines on coasts throughout the world, although, according to news reports, there are only 300 Marines on the ship on it’s current mission;

According to the Washington Times the Marines are members of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

Isn’t Syria landlocked? What is an amphibious landing going to do against them, or are we invading Israel?

Really smart, give the emeny free targeting G-1 so maybe an Iranian sub can get off a lucky shot at a prime target. Really, really, F’in smart. When will we every learn.

This time 30 years ago, 24 MAU with 1/8 as the BLT was in Beirut. The attack on the BLT’s headquarters was 50 days away, they had no idea what was coming, though they were stuck in the middle of an intense civil war. Between the ruling government, Hezbollah, various militias, and the IDF, there was no lack of shooting. Someone please tell me why we’d go into a comparable situation, one that all of the parties involved would like nothing better than a new set of targets to shoot at.

@3 – Why? Because the person (supposedly) in charge is stupid and doesn’t have an ounce of common sense.

And, according to this tweet, he can do whatever he wants to, like any other spoiled brat. https://twitter.com/JimAcostaCNN/status/374149557048709120

@4 It would appear that the CIC is doing the predictable. Telling congress, “No, you vote to act in Syria”. As is SOP for him, you gotta be able to point the finger at someone else.

Roger in Republic

@ 1, No, it has a small strip of coast on the Med. A fifty percent under maned MAF. That sounds about right for this CiC. After all, he wouldn’t want his reprisal force to be “Too Muscular”. People might get hurt. Ass hat.

They would, of course, land via helo vice LCAC.
That being said, they have barely enough to secure the embassy, not that this administration is keen on that type of action.

Maybe they’re just pre-positioning for possible CSAR? The Syrians do have ADA.

Lucky

That ADA is Russian manned…

I fail to see how what use a degraded MEU would have with just one ship full of Marines. The MEU can operate ashore and sustain itself for about 30-60 days. There is no air combat element to speak of, so not sure what the plan is…

…unless the Marines are just going to watch the Navy launch a bunch of Tomahawks. I don’t see the value in that.

Lucky

They are there to watch the fireworks would be my guess or maybe a symbolic gesture

butch

Secure/evac embassy if needed?

Old Trooper

What this is, is Obumbles trying to stack the deck. He’s dangling the bait, the under strength MEU, out there so he can try to get his Tonkin Gulf situation, hoping that someone takes a shot and then he will have his justification to go around Congress.

Unless and until we turn around and sail away immediately, this Will Not End Well.
