SGT Chesty XIII to retire today (Video added)
The Washington Times reports that Sergeant Chesty XIII, the official mascot of the Marine Corps, is scheduled to retire today after his six years of service (that’s 42 dog years of service).
He once caused consternation among Marine wives, however, for snarling and barking at then-Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta’s golden retriever, Bravo, during an event honoring the Pentagon chief.
“Chesty was actually promoted after that event. He wasn’t promoted because of it. It was just a coincidence,” said Staff Sgt. Brian Buckwalter, a Marine Corps spokesman.
However, the incident, which showed his pluck, raised his stature among his fellow “Devil Dogs,” as Marines are known as.
Retired Gen. James N. Mattis once called Sgt. Chesty XIII a “kindred soul.”
His replacement, Private First Class Chesty XIV, has been in training since birth for his position and according to the Times, he just completed boot camp and will be promoted after he assumes his new duties to Lance Corporal.

Did you know that dogs are cannibals?
It’s true.
They won’t hesitate to chow down on hot dogs and hush puppies.
I like dogs – – – , especially with mustard, chili, and cheese.
Of course, in the Army, our “dogs” fit inside of our jump boots, and we march on those “dogs” all day long.
In the movie, “COOL HAND LUKE”, an inmate who wasn’t working was said to be “dogging” it.
And the Marines have always called us soldiers, “Doggies”.
Don’t let obamao get his meathooks on this pooch; otherwise poor ole’ Chesty XIII will be dragged out of retirement and served as stew at the obamao white house dinner table….
Enjoy your retirement, Sgt Chesty! Well done.
What a life:
1. Wears the uniform of the USMC.
2. Is the baddest dog on the face of the earth.
3. Gets to say things like “ruff” and “arrrhhh” when ever he wants.
4. Licks his balls in public … and that is OK!
You learn something every day. I didn’t even know that the Marines had an official mascot. I know when I was in 1/327 our Brigade had a Bulldog as a mascot. His name is Bastogne.
The only time I was ever in a unit that had a mascot was when I was in the 1/325th, the Red Falcons. I guess they couldn’t find a red falcon, so we had a red rooster.
Falcons reminds me of the Fort Campbell High School. Their mascot was the falcon and the school color was blue. Either it was an ironic mistake or somebody had a sense of humor.
I think 3/325th was the Blue Falcons.

PFC Chesty looks like he was born wearing Marpat, doesn’t he?
Rumor is that Hagel is going to reduce Milkbone benefits for retirees from 2 a day to only 1.
Sick’em Boy!
Good dog 🙂
This kind of makes me sad. What is going to happen to Chesty XIII? He isn’t really that old and he is getting pushed out for a younger model. 🙁
Enjoy your retirement, Chesty. May you never want for a butt to sniff or a hydrant to pee on.
Ooh Rah Chesty!
Semper Fi!
Gotta love the USMC!
