Veterans sue New Rochelle City Council

The ignorant liberals on the city council of New Rochelle, NY forbade local veterans groups from flying the “Gadsden Flag” at the local armory, which is owned by the city, because they claim that the flag is “too political”, referring to the current usage by the various “Tea Party” groups. Of course, this is because the city council is not familiar, nor are they interested in learning the flag’s actual history. It has been used by the US Marine Corps for centuries since the first Marines enlisted under the flag in Philadelphia in 1775.

The flag flew over the first US Naval commander-in-chief, Commodore Esek Hopkins, on the mainsail of his flagship that same year.

If “too political” is a reason to ban things, New Rochell should ban the city council.

According to the Washington Times, veterans groups in New Rochelle, are taking the city to court;

City officials contacted on Friday did not immediately comment about the suit, or the case, AP reported.

The lawsuit targets the mayor, the city manager and four council members, and seeks an injunction as well as unspecified damages.

Cool!

Best of luck to them.

“The council members say they banned the flag from flying because it was a blunt political statement, and somebody complained,”

The stupid is strong.

Someone from New Rochelle should complain that the council is stupid and they can ban themselves until someone smarter is elected.

Further proof that an IQ test should be a prerequisite to elected office.

Good luck!

We go through the same thing in the “new South” with the Confederate Battle Flag. People are so ignorant of history.

A variation of the Gadsen Flag was also used by the Culpeper Minute Men, of which my Great, great,(maybe one more “great”) grandfather fought with in the Revolution.

I can’t help but wonder how Rob and Laura Petrie feel about this. Their politics was always a tad suspect–especially Laura’s. Buddy and Sally are probably livid.

What do you expect? It’s the NYC metro area. What a bunch o’ maroons!

I wonder if they would ban the Naval Jack if one of our vessels called on their shitty port.

Hate to be a grammar nazi, but “ignorant liberals” is a redundancy.

What is sad about this is the city council will put the taxpayers on the hook for defending their foolishness. I would hope that a reasonable court would allow personal damages against the jack-offs to make them dig into their own pocketbook. If this nation would get more judges with a fucking backbone some of this nonsense could be stopped at the first level!

3364–but I bet the love the fuck out of that “ghey pride” rainbow flag, don’t they?

Hypocritical assclowns.

Okay I am going to stir the pot a little (sometimes I can’t help myself). Having read the article I just don’t see enough factual details here to render any sort of informed insight.

What is the purpose of the city owned armory? (Yes we can all make an assumption that it is probably for the New York State Guard or even National Guard. But I prefer not to render a judgment based on an assumption.) Is the armory also used for other civic purposes? Do the veterans’ groups maintain offices there? Does the City maintain public offices in the building?

Is the issue more properly framed as the right of free speech vs. the right to non-partisan civil service? Would, as suggested in earlier posts, the city council have objected to a rainbow flag? (and not the 42nd “Rainbow” Division flag)

If the armory is a public free speech area akin to a public square then yes the city council is out of line. If it is a governmental office area then I am not as convinced. I prefer my civil servants to be politically neutral in their public duties.

@12 You are right on that. They would have a ribbon cutting ceremony when the gay pride flag went up. Good for the vets. I hope they prevail. Freedom of speech.

OWB

Too bad so many, but particularly liberals, are willing to brag about their ignorance. It’s what happens when facts and history become irrelevant and only one’s feelings are acted upon.

And they cannot admit, of course, that their reaction is the height of hypocrisy since it is completely politically motivated. Silly people.
