Needed: Amateur SD Travel Agents

| August 2, 2013

So I am flying to Rapid City, SD tomorrow, and have about 10 hours to blow.  Do I go to the Badlands, or to Black Hills with Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Monument?

Any suggestions on what I need to visit while there appreciated.  I am staying in Blackhorse, between Rapid City and Sturgis, but will have a car.

NOTE: My tentative plan is to just go into Rapid City and ask around for Catherine Bach and Adam Vinitieri, two of my favorite people who are residents of that town.

You don’t consider Vinateiri a traitor?

Hang out in Deadwood for a bit and soak in the frontier feel of that famous town. Lots of history behind this town, with Wild Bill Hickock getting shot and killed while playing the deadman’s hand, Calamity Jane, the great fires that burned down the town and its rebuilding, etc.; Deadwood’s a must see…

If SD had meant San Diego I could have seriously hooked you up. As it is the closest I got to Sturgis was Rapid City and Rushmore, having lived across the border in Gilette.

Badlands. They are awesome and awe inspiring.

Several years ago my son and I spent the night in the Badlands National Park (we sneaked in past the closed sign). Woke up with the sun rising on the badlands in front of the parking lot. Beautiful sight, soul inspiring. We left and made a beeline to Mount Rushmore (Son, wanta see some big heads?). We got in before it opened (my white XL F350 crewcab looked like a contractor so they waved me through the gate). The boy and I were the only people there. Saw the sun continue to rise over the faces on the mountain. Beautiful. Hit ’em both.

My last PCS we stopped in Rapid City for the night. Took in Mount Rushmore and on a whim ended up going to the Crazy Horse memorial…..wow. Just to give you the perspective in size difference; the 4 heads at Rushmore can fit just on Crazy Horse’s head. Amazing sculpture. I actually got to meet and speak to Korczak Ziolkowski’s widow, Ruth. Very nice woman took time out of her day to tell us about the monument and her late Husband and family, who are still working on it for 66 years now.

I like iron Mountain Road if you are on a bike. And if you stop at Buffalo Chip go see hank Rotten and tell him Liz and chris from Joplin said to give you tickets to one of the shows. Let him know your a Vet and he will hook you up. he is a life long friend and a good guy.. And make sure you have coffee at the Sturgis Coffee Company.

Hmmm, don’t know what happened to the comment I posted…

Go to Rushmore and don’t bother with Crazy Horse, it’s lame. Go to Deadwood and Sturgis if you have some time, but I’d say spend as much time as you can at Rushmore. It’s quite awesome.

Ask Adam to sign some Colts stuff for you ????

Mount Rushmore definitely. If you little time drive down to Hot Springs SD through Custer State Park and see the buffalo and an old resort town. If you really wanted to have a whirl wind tour and do some military history drive down to FT Robinson NE to see an old post that spanned from the end of the Sioux Wars thru World War II.

@1.

Kickers are mercenaries.

They kick for the highest bidder.

Goes with the territory.

@9.

I am missing a few as well.

We were out there last year – coincidentally, about a week before Sturgis but there were plenty of early arrivals on the road.

Rushmore is a must if you’ve never seen it. Crazy Horse? Kinda cool, but mostly disappointing; it’ll still be unfinished after all of our great-grandchildren are dead. Devil’s Tower is worth a visit if you have time.

Go see the Minuteman national historic monument. It’s an actual Minuteman 2 Launch Control Facility you can visit . They also have a Launch Facility near by with a training missile visible they glass. It’s the only place in the world where you can see these. I worked on them in the AF so know about it,have to take the wife there someday.

Rick

Go see the Mammoth sink hole in Hot Springs.

Bucky Katt

Can’t miss on any of those choices. Since it’s rally week be prepared for ALOT of motorcycle traffic.

One place you might want to go see is the Vore Buffalo Jump just outside Beulah Wyoming.

Needles highway, Iron Mountain, Road, Vonnecker Canyon, Keystone, all great.
