Morsi rebuffs Egypt’s military

| July 2, 2013

MSN reports that Egypt’s President Morsi is ignoring the country’s military leaders who gave him 48 hours to reach an agreement with protesters over the political future of the fledgling government;

Describing civilian rule as a great gain from the revolution of 2011, Morsi said he would not let the clock be turned back.

He spoke to U.S. President Barack Obama by phone on Monday, stressing that Egypt was moving forward with a democratic transition. The White House said Obama encouraged him to respond to the protests and “underscored that the current crisis can only be resolved through a political process.”

Yasser El-Shimy, Egypt analyst at the International Crisis Group, said the army ultimatum had hardened positions on either side, making it very difficult to find a constitutional way out of the crisis: “Things could deteriorate very rapidly from there, either through confrontations on the street, or international sanctions,” he said.

“Mursi is calling their bluff, saying to them, ‘if you are going to do this, you will have to do it over my dead body’.”

I don’t see the military having any problem with that decision.

Meanwhile, the Committee to Protect Journalists reports that seven reporters have been injured in the rioting in Egypt, one has been killed and female Dutch reporter has been raped;

The bomb was hurled at protesters in Shuhada Square; [Salah al-Din Hassan, 37-year-old reporter with independent news website Shaab Masr (Egyptian People)] picked it up to throw it away but it exploded, killing him and injuring 16 others, according to news reports. Ayda Sobh, Hassan’s mother, blamed Morsi’s supporters for hurling the bomb, according to the reports.

According to Egyptian news reports, the woman was a television reporter who was raped by unidentified men as she tried to cover the beginnings of the protests. A state hospital issued a statement on Sunday saying the woman was hospitalized for two days and had to undergo surgery. Egyptian authorities are investigating, according to the Dutch embassy’s statement.

I guess that’s another one from which we should keep away. I’m sure we’ll get blamed any way it turns out.

This is one big mess.

Some people, against all liberal banter to the contrary, cannot handle power ad freedom.

I am sorry, but it is true.

Egypt, Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Jordan?

I could give a rats ass about any of ’em. Let them kill each other off.

Those fucks aren’t ready to be civilized yet.

Morsi may rebuff the Egyptian military, but I think the Egyptian military will “rebuff” right back.
As for the famale reporter that was raped, I guess that just shows the difference between a western (non-muzzie)uprising, and a muzzie one. I could be wrong, but I just don’t see this sort of thing (a rape) happening in a non-muzzie riot.

@USMC8Ret–Heh. Ain’t that the truth. If only it were that easy…

NR Pax

Build a wall high and strong enough to isolate them from civilization.

Drop in all the guns, bombs, knives, etc.

Wait for nature to take its course, then go in and civilize the region.

It sure is a good thing that Obama gave attack fighters and tanks to such a stable and honorable country…

ASS!

Morsi better be careful lest he be caught in a Libyan crossfire. For those not familiar with the term, a Libyan Crossfire occurs when a .357 Magnum pistol is placed against one temple and a bullet is fired across to the other temple. Ala Mumar Qaddafi.

Common Sense

I read this today:

http://www.thetower.org/article/the-map-that-ruined-the-middle-east/

I say stay out of all of it, let them sort it all out, but contain it to the Middle East.

We always seem to create our own problems and enemies, don’t we?

@11.

Great article.

As a History undergrad; it makes “Sense”.

I wouldn’t put it past either side doing this. The entire region has a problem with treating women respectfully, I’m waiting for them to blame Bush.

Old Trooper

@12: You would think that after the last round of protests, where multiple women were raped, that they would get the hint and stay the hell out of there. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

One islamist ideologue getting his ass kicked in 3… 2… 1… (hey, the Pakistani military’s done that about three times now since their country’s founding).

Ex-PH2

Well, the military’s deadline has come and gone. I wait to see what will happen next. I think there may be a coup on the horizon.

Someone please notify the White House to stay the hell away from this. As soon as I read in the article, “Obama and the UN”, I got shivers because the UN always turns to the US to take the lead in bailing out every shithole problem that comes up.

Ex-PH2

Morsi’s phone service is cut off, so Bodaprez won’t be able to wafflelate with him.
