Nice piece, but dam TSO, that beard needs it’s own weapon permit, lol.

Let’s see; 2 prerequisites were covered in that story: TSO’s beard and Senior Chief Shipley’s hair. The Duo of Awesomeness. Good thing they weren’t sitting next to each other, otherwise there could have been a spontaneous battle erupting right there between the two.

I think some sort of warning should be posted before viewing this video. As this was my first exposure to The Beard I was not prepared for the full glory of it and now have a black eye. I’m calling my “lawer”. 😉

SJ–that was just a YouTube clip of the Senior Chief. If in fact they had ever appeared together in the same room, it might well have spelled doom for the planet. You know, that whole division by zero or some such like that.

The TAC Officers from our Citadel would not approve of TSO’s growth. TSO is the man though: My wife would have never let me do that yet Mrs TSO showed up on another thread awhile back and said she likes it. As TSO ages, he’ll add new meaning to the term “grey beard”.

This is completely off-topic, but I was wondering whether you all had a handle on the NSA whistle-blower’s military service claims, now that he’s revealed himself as 29-year-old Edward Snowden. This is from the Guardian, via Reason:
———————————
In 2003, he enlisted in the US army and began a training program to join the Special Forces. Invoking the same principles that he now cites to justify his leaks, he said: “I wanted to fight in the Iraq war because I felt like I had an obligation as a human being to help free people from oppression”.
He recounted how his beliefs about the war’s purpose were quickly dispelled. “Most of the people training us seemed pumped up about killing Arabs, not helping anyone,” he said. After he broke both his legs in a training accident, he was discharged.
———————
Mike T, I dunno, I read another interview with him that didn’t mention mil service and he even boasted that for a HS dropout he was doing pretty good with his $200k a year job.

Something just doesn’t smell right with the whole scenario, Andy. The whole narrative is just so pat, so “too good to check”.
Remember, the Guardian is the British newspaper which got snookered by that “Muslim lesbian blogger” in “Syria”, who turned out to be a a 40-year-old American male college student in a Che Guevara T-shirt.
Now this former tech contractor, former Army man, former Special Forces trainee who SAW THE LIGHT about how evil Americans were and happily managed to break both legs and escape the evil racist SF trainers, reckons teh CIA is either going to “render” him or pay off the Chinese triads to end him. (He’s sounding more like Assange than Manning there, paranoia-wise…)
Is anyone even asking how this junior contractor, not even a government employee, had access to all this chit?
If everything he’s saying is true, it’s an incredible story. Maybe that’s why my antennae are twitching.

Another Q., Andy, since you mentioned he claims to be a high-school drop-out. So how’d he end up in Special Forces training? Were they giving out heaps of HS diploma waivers for that in 2003?

Mike–I noticed that too. Okay, so he was 19 in 2003. When did he enlist? How long had he been in before he went to Q-course, etc?
This is beginning to STINK.

Not that I’m defending him, but it is possible to go straight into the Q Course “Baby program” as they call it. At that point I don’t know about HS waivers, but you have to go thru basic training first, at which time you can take the GED as a “prerequisite” to graduating basic training.
It is suspect that he’d go into the SF Baby program “if” he didn’t have a HS diploma, but at the same time, by that point they’d shut off the “stop loss” for 18-series I believe and as such, needed all the SF guys they could get. If his ASVAB was high enough, it could’ve happened. And getting hurt during SFAS, the Q course, etc., is possible.
Again, I’m not defending the guy, just saying it is “possible” if the stars align, a butterfly flaps its wings in the Amazon, and TSO’s beard delivers a baby squirrel…

@Mike T. – Thanks for bringing up dickblower Snowden. Somebody had to. No doubt he deserves his own thread, off of this one.

The US army has confirmed an aspect of surveillance whistleblower Edward Snowden’s military service to the Guardian.
As Snowden told the Guardian in announcing his responsibility for detailing multiple mass surveillance efforts by the National Security Agency sweeping up Americans’ communications data, Snowden indeed tried to join the elite special forces.
Snowden was unsuccessful.
“His records indicate he enlisted in the army reserve as a special forces recruit (18X) on 7 May 2004 but was discharged 28 September 2004,” the US army’s chief civilian spokesman, George Wright, emailed the Guardian on Monday.
“He did not complete any training or receive any awards,” Wright added.
The army did not release Snowden’s entire service record, a form known as a DD-214, despite the Guardian’s request.
—————————–
He’s a hero to the anti-war Paulians for his claim that “Most of the people training us seemed pumped up about killing Arabs, not helping anyone”. And I’ve still heard people calling him a “special forces veteran”. Ugh.
OK, I’m out. Cheers.
