Lautenberg, Senate’s last WWII vet passes
Regardless of what you think about his politics, or the circumstances that brought him out of retirement and back to the Senate, Frank Lautenberg’s passing marks the end of an era when nearly every member of the Senate had served in the military. Lautenberg served during World War II in the Signal Corps from 1942 to 1946. After the war, he attended Columbia University on his GI Bill, like the rest of us.
According to the Washington Times, his replacement will be named by Republican New Jersey Governor Christie. For some reason everyone thinks that Christie will name a Republican, but I wouldn’t put any money on it given Christie’s recent behavior.
The attention of the political world now turns to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie who is responsible for naming an interim replacement to serve of the remainder of Mr. Lautenberg’s term.
Mr. Christie is likely to tap a fellow Republican, cutting into the 55 seat majority that Democrats hold in the Senate.
Regardless, the world has changed with Lautenberg’s passing.

Rest in peace, Senator.
Yes, Rest In the Peace of God’s hands. Thank you old soldier.
“Regardless, the world has changed with Lautenberg’s passing.” Yeah, it has changed for the better. There is now one less uber liberal in the Senate. He did more to advance legalized baby killings and curtail 2nd amendment rights as any of the other uber libs in the Senate. His replacement can be as bad but cannot be worse. I do not speak to his service during WW II. He did his part in helping to rid the world of tyranny. I’m sorry he later helped to build it through nanny statism.
I’m sorry. I may be a bad person, but I am shedding no tears and have absolutely nothing positive to say about Lautenberg’s passing. I’m going to try not to mention him at all, because I find him to have been a repugnant piece of fetid detritus who had no respect for the Constitution he swore to protect, both in the military and as a scumbag Senator. This is the same pernicious swine that said we don’t DESERVE the rights protected by the Constitution – as if he and his dirtbag buddies on the Hill are the ones who give them to us!
Fuck Lautenberg. Personally, I’d line up to piss on his rotting fucking carcass.
Sorry, he’s one I can’t even have the stomach to thank.
He’s still a dick
At 3, 4, and 5… Amen!
Murtha was prior service too. While I can respect that they served, doesn’t mean I had to like or respect them.
To clarify. I do honor his service to the nation as a serviceman. But…that is all. I certainly did not honor him as a Senator or politician at large.
Rest in piss…
Jonn stated that the last World War II Vet has passed in the Senate, what is even more troubling about that, and the lack of Korean War Vets in the Senate, is the number of Veterans serving in Congress or Senate
“In the 113th Congress, it is reported that 85 of the 435 House members are veterans (down from 91) and 19 of the 100 Senators are veterans (down from 25). In the 95th Congress (1977-78) 347 members of the House (80 percent) were veterans. In the 97th Congress (1981-82), 73 Senators (73 percent) were veterans.”

What do you think is the reason for this? Are we running fewer Veterans? Has the attitude of Americans changed? Will this number increase in 10 years or so when our OIF/OEF Vets start running for office? Any other theories?
Didn’t care for the man’s politics but I mostdefinitely respect his service to the Republic in its hour of need. For that I thank you Senator Lautenberg. Peace be with you and may we be worthy.
I usually just lurk and laugh silently at the write-ups on the Stolen Valor page, always looking for that one poser who makes me laugh harder than Nick “Soup Sandwich” Androsky does, but I’m going to break my silence by saying that I’m completely with Nicki, David and the other detractors of Lautenberg here. Nicki summed up my feelings best and David superbly summed up my one-sentence argument against anyone offended by my lack of sympathy. Unfortunately, I too would bet against Christie replacing him with a Republican (a real one, anyway), but I digress.
Obviously, I’m not adding anything other than another pair of thumbs down here, but I sure feel a lot better having done so. The man’s voting record was an abomination and it’s a reasonably safe bet that his thirty or so years in the Senate did a lot more damage to this country than his four years of military service did good for it.
Being stationed in NJ, there wasn’t a lot of tears for the individual from some of the local residents. The VFW on the other hand, had at least raised a glass for the Veteran that was lost. Love or hate him, he at least served and as stated…was the last WWII veteran in the Senate. That says a lot.
I hate to say I told you so, but I did tell ya so.
