Russians; Tamerlan Tsarnaev discussed jihad with mom

| April 29, 2013

So, the other day we discovered that the matriarch of the Boston bombing Tsarnaev family was on a terrorist watch list, and today we awaken to the news that she and her oldest son had a conversation about jihad, recorded by the Russians, according to NBC News;

Russian authorities have told U.S. investigators they recorded a 2011 telephone conversation between Boston bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev and his mother in which the pair discussed jihad, according to a source briefed on the investigation.

The conversation, which the Russians have said was captured electronically via a wiretap, was not presented to U.S. authorities until after the April 15 bombing

So, I guess when the Russians tell us to keep an eye on someone, we should probably keep an eye on him.

Yeah, but, JL, that would mean we take the whole job seriously, eh? I mean, it’s not like we’re actually expecting anyone to do such naughty things in our backyard, is it?

Naw. It’s all NIMBY with us these days. Couldn’t possibly happen here. Might interrupt the golf game and picnics on the White House lawn and those rides in Air Force One.

Just sayin’.

B Woodman

And what bright young loving young man doesn’t discuss his jihadist murdering of innocent civilians hopes, dreams and aspirations with his mom??

Old Trooper

Twice we ignored intel and twice we got burned. Do ya think we will take this shit serious, now?

OWB

Ya’d think, OT! But that would require folks with an ability to focus on something other than themselves.

Hondo

In fairness, I don’t really see how this can be categorized as an intel failure. Prior to the bombing, we didn’t have too much on the guy.

Per published accounts apparently all the Russians told us before the bombing was that they had “concerns” about the guy, and weren’t terribly specific as to what those concerns were. They didn’t share the actual audio of him and his mom with us until after the Boston Marathon bombing.

The FBI reportedly checked the guy out, but didn’t have much to go on. They apparently didn’t find enough to be overly concerned. With more info, maybe they would have.

I figured out something about Mom’s delusions of grandeur. Her (now dead) oldest son’s name was Tamerlan, last name Tsarnaev.

Now if you do a little digging, you find that Tamerlane, a European version of Timur-i-Leng (Timur the Lame, ‘timur’ means ‘iron’ in Turkic), was an aggressive and vicious conqueror of 14th century Asia Minor originating in what is now Uzbekistan. His father was the chief of the Barlas tribe, of mixed Mongolian and Turkic ancestry, descendants of Genghis Khan. Poems have been written about Tamerlane. His legend looms large in Central Asia.

And in Russian names, the -ev added to a name means ‘son of’, as in Yuriev. Tsar, of course, was the Russian version of the surname Caesar, the family name of Gaius Julius Caesar. In this case, it probably means that someone in the Tsarist household monkeyed around with a local before the Bolsheviks arrived on the scene.

(Bear with me here. I’m having some fun with this.)

So Mom Tsarnaev, knowing the history of her region and having married someone whose last name means ‘son of a Tsar’, decided to name her first born after a legendary and aggressive warrior, who was widely known for his legendary nastiness as well as his good taste in art and architecture.

However, Mom’s plans backfired, and her boy now goes down in history as a big loser (as his uncle put it) and will fade away to nothing.

I think the FBI gets several thousand of these “tips” a day….they interview people, but they don’t have the resources to keep after all of this. That’s a reality.

As the government is slowly discovering there is not an endless stream of resources to address every facet of our existence one can only hope there will be an actual honest discussion as to what constitutes an actual threat to the fabric of our society as we know it…..

These are the tough policy discussions that are not sexy and don’t have great sound bite, photo op moments for the ruling elite. These are the kinds of tough policy discussions that actually address difficult issues, like is a terrorist threat more likely to result in damage to our nation than some fatties getting a 24 oz. soda pop or some kids carving a toy gun out of a pop tart?

Under Obama we’ve several terrorists complete their acts of terrorism on US soil….instead of working for photo op moments Mr. President perhaps you could actually start working for the American people as you promised. If you want your legacy to be more than the least successful president since Jimmy Carter you might want to re-focus your efforts and those of your subordinates to what really matters, like national security instead of worrying that some muslim piece of sh1t might have a bad opinion about the United States because we are profiling muslim sh1theads…..

VOV, you’re asking FAR too much of a slacker.

Have you never worked with a goldbricker before? I have, and they are REALLY annoying.

And guess what got voted into the most important job in the country? That’s right!

OWB

An odd juxtaposition of facts, maybe only claims, once again. In this clowns case, we have our handlers claiming that there was a single contact from Russia concerning his having been radicalized. That bit of info hit us early, with the disclaimer that there were repeated attempts by us to garner additional info from the Fussians.

Then, also fairly early on but following the release of claims of a single contact, Putin publicly claims that the Russians made multiple contacts with us concerning this same individual. (Sorry, I don’t know where I read that, but presumably from a couple of foreign news sources.)

Hmm. Do we believe them or us? Who has more to gain by making the claims?? I dunno, but this time, Putin’s story is more believable and appears to be less self-serving. How uttering unsettling!

OWB

(or “info from the Russians!”)

Ah … is that not so sweet? The love between a caring mother and her devoted son. Kinda warms the heart!

I still say they’re racist right-wing teabaggers.

I believe Putin. We all know the other one lies his ass off on a regular basis.

@12 My thoughts exactly.

Common Sense

It’s frightening when Putin looks more honest and presidential than the President of the United States:

I’m beginning to think that Putin knows which side his bread is buttered on.

China basically broke political ties with Moscow when the USSR dissolved. They never had the same Commie philosophy. The Bolsheviks with Lenin and Trotsky forged it and Stalin molded it, but after Stalin was gone it became less militant in the USSR and more ‘keep up with les Etats Unis’.

Everyone else, including China and Mao, emulated Stalin and that is what is still on in Norkland. It does not work well and is very slowly beginning to fray at the edges. China views Norkland as a threat. So does Russia. The US views Norkland as annoying spoiled brat who needs to be spanked. Or, at least that’s how Norkland was viewed until now — not sure what’s going on right now.

So Vlad is trying to buddy-up with the USofA, just in case Iran gets hyperactive in Central Asia, and China decides to support its neighbor to the south. I think China is more afraid of the Norks than either Russia or the US, in fact.

Some of the former satellite states of the USSR, such as Tajikistan, border China in the region of the Pamirs, in the steppes of Central Asia. It is dry, windswept, starkly beautiful, and no one goes there on camel caravans any more. But there are sections of the Old Silk Road that Iran is using to ship oil to China, still in use. It would be easy enough for a Nork army to move through there unobstructed.

So, if Vlad Putin is trying to buddy-up with the White House and Bodaprez is not paying attention, this may be the biggest missed opportunity there ever was, and millions of registered voters may be completely screwed three ways to Sunday.

(Okay, that was kind of rambling, but I had fun writing it. I should write to Vlad.)

Sarcasm detection failure alert at #16. 🙂

I would be curious to know why the Russians passed that info on to us. Post-bombing, it could possibly be seen as an embarrassment, which I’m sure they’re aware of. So they thought it in their best interests to bring that info to our attention. Why? It seems to me that Ex-PH2 hit on a couple of possibilities, and I also think they know that jihadists aren’t a local problem anymore. We need them and they need us, to fight it successfully. “The enemy of my enemy is my friend,” possibly?

Hondo

PintoNag: I tend to think it was more along the lines of, “See, you should have listened to us. So next time, listen!” As well as to insulate against any charges that they were somehow involved.

LostOnThemInterwebs

This just keeps me in awe, I’m just … God the amount of facepalm is ridiculous on this *sigh*

http://news.yahoo.com/mother-bomb-suspects-found-deeper-spirituality-224317582.html

Now, so the FBI actually had taps of the mom talking to a suspect of another “unrelated” investigation, talked about 9/11 being a conspiracy against the muslims,

quote:
“She had never worn a hijab while working at the spa previously, or inside the house, and I was really surprised,” Kilzer wrote in a post on her blog. “She started to refuse to see boys that had gone through puberty, as she had consulted a religious figure and he had told her it was sacrilegious. She was often fasting.”
Kilzer wrote that Tsarnaeva was a loving and supportive mother, and she felt sympathy for her plight after the April 15 bombings. But she stopped visiting the family’s home for spa treatments in late 2011 or early 2012 when, during one session, she “started quoting a conspiracy theory, telling me that she thought 9/11 was purposefully created by the American government to make America hate Muslims.”

Errrr now don’t get me wrong, I’m as religious as the next man, but one thing that is dangerous is fanatical religiousness (of ANY religion) so the FBI did an investigation (http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/04/24/dagestan-boston-bombing-fbi-interview-tsarnaev/2108835/) and couldn’t really ask that? Errrrr ok

*sigh* *facepalm again* I just hope we learn and “git r dun” so we don’t have more repeats of this situation of “I told you so”

Ex-PH2

Lost, the dumbness jest keeps pilin’ up, don’t it?

In all seriousness, the missed opportunities are beginning to look like a laundry of how NOT to run investigations and counterterrorism. It’s just mind boggling how the people who should be putting two and two together are not even getting three out of it. I actually try to time my trips to the grocery store when there are fewer people there. And car travel? No interstate any more unless I have no other choice.

The New York Marathon comes up soon, and the Chicago Marathon is in October. I hope someone is awake this time.

Geezo pete, what does it take?

I’m as serious as cancer when I ask that!

OWB

Motive for sharing info? It probably is the simplest explanation – if they could get us to deal with a potential threat to them that would be one less that they must deal with later. It probably was not obvious at the time of the initial request whether the future target might be us or them.

Ex-PH2

A little update on Mom Tsarnaeva: she’s now in hiding.
