“You don’t know what freedom is”
Yesterday, in Salem, OR, a Cuban refugee from Castro’s communist Cuba, Manuel Martinez, scolded his local government when they tried to pass more gun control legislation telling them that “You don’t don’t know what freedom is because you’ve never lost it.”

Mr. Martinez escaped the brutal Communist regime in Cuba in [1959]. His testimony included how citizens under Castro were first disarmed by legislation similar to that being shepherded along by Gun-Grabber in Chief Floyd Prozanski. Defenseless, many Cuban Citizens were later summarily slaughtered.

Mr. Martinez points his finger at ‘officials’ and says, as Jonn relates, “You people don’t know what freedom is because you never lost it.” Amen to that. I loved the “you people” because it depersonalizes and beautifully addresses the officials as public servants being lectured by one of their bosses, a common citizen. He nails the purpose of the underlying motivation for government gun grabbers and their private collaborators: to further subjugate The People. I also note that Mr. Martinez did not bow to his native language and pronounce Cuba as Coo-bah, but, instead used the American vernacular, Q-bah. Are you listening obamaman (Pok-e-stan) and libtards? No, I didn’t think so.
Castro didn’t ban guns. In fact, I just came across an article dated 2010 giving amnesty to Cubans who had not yet registered their guns. Yes I know that’s problematic all by itself for all the reasons we already know but that’s not my point. As passionate as Mr. Martinez’ testimony is, it isn’t entirely accurate. However, legislators are too stupid to think for themselves and he speaks for a cause I believe in so charlie mike!
Amazing how people who are the biggest defenders of our way of life are those from nations who have been subjects and not citizens most of their lives.

@3, to paraphrase a good man, we esteem too lightly what we earn too cheaply.
And most of us who were born here in the US earned our freedom very very cheaply indeed.
@2. Gun possession in Cuba is tightly controlled through licensing and registration. NO subject –ah, citizen– may own or possess a firearm in Cuba unless pre-approved (i.e., licensed) by the state and then only if the firearm itself is registered with the state. The state granted amnesty to those who were in violation of the licensing and registration laws for a period of two months. There is no right to gun ownership in the Cuban Constitution and there is conflicting information on the net regarding whether Castro and Co. issued a decree (issuing decrees was their SOP) prohibiting private gun ownership. In any event, the state knows who has what guns and, if the state doesn’t, the possessor is violating the law.
When I watch a man like this defend our way of life, this is the reason I am proud to serve in the military. For this type of Patriot I serve.
Everyone should see this video! Many of us on this site have witnessed the outcome in other countries where the ownership of firearms by private citizens is prohibited or drastically restricted, and we know there is no freedom in that country from tyrannical government.

@2: The Soviets didn’t ban travel out of the country, either, however, you had to be a party member in good standing in order to travel abroad (plus, you had severe restrictions). The Soviets held elections, too, however, you had to be a party member in good standing to vote (most Russians weren’t party members).
In Cuba, I’m pretty sure the same rules apply to gun ownership.
The worst offenders of freedom are the pampered elites who have never talked with those who have escaped tyranny to freedom. They are clueless in so many ways but perhaps the most dangerous is their unwillingness to observe that they are just as vulnerable as the rest of us to whatever moves in to replace our hard earned freedoms.
Good, add one more to the list of folks to “get it”, and hopefully a few more Americans who think gun registration isn’t really a bad thing will see this video and realize the consequences… What do they think has kept these Congress critters from passing even more outrageous legislation – Congress’ strong moral compass – you know, from guys like Anthony Weiner, or Barney “the brothel” Frank…..

@12. No, not off hand but I’ll poke around a bit and see what reliable stuff I can find. I would point out that there is often a world of difference bewteen a law and practice. One could find laws on the books today that prohibit all sorts of things but, in practice, the provisions are meaningless. Then there are other considerations, such as if one finds, for instance, that it is legal to own a firearm in a place, that is not to say that the sale of a firearm is legal. Or conversely, sales may not be prohibited but private possession is. It isn’t always a simple matter to establish law, law enforcement, and practice by looking only at a particular law.
I am ashamed to say I live in Oregon and have to live with fools like Prozanski and Burdick (whose electorate resides in ‘Moscow on the Willamette”, the Portland area) every day and their assaults on our Constitutional rights.
This will not sway them in any way. This will not get them to drop their bills. This is just a speed bump on their quest to destroy gun ownership in Oregon.
They look at people like Mr. Martinez, you or me like subjects from the second he sat behind that microphone.
And just and FYI, no newspaper, not the Salem Statesman Journal or Portland’s Oregonian has had a report on this man’s testimony.
Zackly what my Cuban-refugee wife says. First thing the communistas did was round up the guns. Then they rounded up anyone that could oppose them and let that “hero” Che shoot them. He was real brave when his victims were unarmed.
@15 – of course that was the first thing they did, that’s what the British were trying to do at Concord/Lexington and why we have the 2nd Amendment.

As son of a Cuban immigrant I can tell you how much we adore freedom and what this country has given us. Which is why we despise idiots who idolize tyrants and murderers like Castro or Che. What’s even more disturbing is some of the things I read in my college textbooks. People don’t know what they have until they lose it. Cubans lost it once and were damn sure we are not going to lose it again. I thank God every day that I was born in this great Country and I count the days until I can serve when I graduate college. As far as the gun issue, guards would go into people’s homes and check for guns and if they found anything they would take it and the person hiding them would be in a world of hell. I would also like to take this time to thank all of you who have served and stood the walls of the last beacon of hope and freedom in the world.
