MRAPs for serving warrants
I don’t want to get on anyone’s bad side, here, but, I’m thinking that an MRAP for serving warrants at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Bureau is a little excessive, unless of course, they serve warrants by driving though your wall and dropping the warrant off on your coffee table, then backing out. I wonder how many anti-armor mines ICE encounters in a year.
And the military-style uniforms for domestic law enforcement don’t exactly inspire anything close to a warm & fuzzy feeling. Especially when the feds have bought up enough ammo to shoot each American five times and at the same time, they’re trying to disarm us. I’m no conspiracy nut, but stuff like this doesn’t seem rational to me.
Thanks to Old trooper for the link, I guess.

Another thing about the doors is that they will really have a hell of a time getting them opened if the combat locks on the doors are engaged :). I’m thinking that a patrol car or even a full size van will get 2-3X mpg, too, but what the hell, Uncle Sam (meaning you) is ultimately paying the bill :).
@40 – I had not thought about the rollover quality on those over-done mechnical gashogs. It would not be very difficult to tip one of them over, just by putting a few intentional bumps in the road, or disabling them by destroying the air valves on the tires. Or put sugar or cornstarch in the gas tank. Or drop a big log across the road they’re traveling on.
They don’t look very maneuverable to me. They only have about 14 inches of ground clearance, which is fine if you’re tooling down a smooth road, but what happens if you get into the bush? The chassis’s mounted outside the armor. You could easily run a chain around it and yank it off if you do it right.
And I’ll bet they get about 8 gallons to the mile, too. The fuel tank holds 57 to 74 gallons. With the weight it carries, that won’t last long.
I think they are using these because they look “cool” and “foreboding” and nothing more.
Some cops are the worst geardo’s of anyone in any uniform.
– Easy “fall” over (can’t really say roll over)
– NOT off-road capable
– uncomfortable as hell
– not maneuverable (except maybe MATV’s)
– maintenance is exorbitant
Anyone remember before the “paperless Army” when you actually used the phone or face-to-face conversation to do business? lol…
@53, you left out the parts about how you can get your neck broken or your skull fractured if an IED hits the MRAP or it goes over a very, very badly rutted, dimpled road.
They’re also vulnerable to directed and malleable charges.
If I listed all the problems with MRAPs, no one else would get to have any fun complaining about them.
You could also add that the gunner is useless against someone right next to the vehicle, unlike a hummer.
I was glad to have an 1114 in Baghdad in 05-06. Especially in the high population neighborhoods.
@56, And I’d bet a quarter that those overdone lumber wagons make those ICE guys feel like REAL badasses.
And how come the 50 cals freeze when they’re used in a firefight? What good are they when they do that?
What does LE need with a mine resistant vehicle? Nothing.
What does the Border Patrol need with a ballistic proof weapon? A LOT, (partially due to Obama’s “Fast and Furious”)
I’m not really convinced of a need for the BP to serve warrants though.
But what about all those Iraq MRAPs? Well last I heard they were being crushed in Kuwait. Not mothballed, not being sent to Afghanistan, not being returned state side, but destroyed. That was 2010, during the “responsible drawdown.”
That was a waste of money and resources, not to mention MRAPs would be counterproductive in large swathes of Afghanistan.
So, I have “mixed feelings” about this. I’d rather BP get some otherwise destroyed MRAPs for their ballistic properties, but see absolutely no need for ICE/SWAT to have counter-IED vehicles. And certainly would like to see how much ICE contributed to the DoD budget for their acquisition.
As to the green energy subsidies, paid for out of DoD budgets, well, I’ve said that was idiotic and corrupt fraud since 2009.
Funny how LE can break laws to enforce laws.
Ooo. They call themselves “operators” now. Makes it sound all sf like
And whats with the OD ACUs? Never seen those before.
I support leos who look out for my best interest, as I dont partake in felony activities. However I woulnt appreciate being viewed as a military target either, which is how anyone would feel seeing one of these.Running patrols on our streets like the army did in iraq
@61 – The green fatigues? It’s probably the only thing they can find at Army-Navy surplus stores and the Goodwill shops.
Those are flight suits, or something that looks like it. Fire retardant clothes were very popular with SWAT/direct action type units.
CVC suits are appropriate in vehicles like that, I’d guess – IF the drivers/gunners never left (see: Bradley, et al)
Those dont look like special suits nor flight. They look like the standard ACU, but OD green. An odd choice indeed.
Have you noticed how on the so called “reality shows,” that the HS nomenclature is popping up on city and county resources such as the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD)? Pay attention and from time to time, Sgt. Tom Jenkins is profiled as both an officer of the LVMPD and a Department of Homeland Security officer. This is the growing interagency involvement that is concerning many Americans. Just as Judge Judy understands that Pit Bulls are dangerous animals and need to be adequately restrained (she says the only reason people own them is because they are vicious), we need to stop importing persons into this country we know attend to a basic world view that is threatening at the least and dangerous at the most. I too am concerned about the increasing military character of our law enforcement personnel. It has been a creeping subtle change over the years. It is not cool, nor does it instill confidence.
