Training is hard
MCPO NYC USN (Ret.) sends us a story about some police training at the a police academy in Owing Mills, MD that somehow went wrong;
The 40-year-old just joined the University of Maryland police force this summer. He was in training with city police. His training class was using an area with abandoned buildings when his instructor accidentally shot him in the head.
[…]
“There’s no acceptable explanation why there were live rounds at a training exercise,” (Baltimore City) Mayor Rawlings-Blake said. “I was so angry. I was almost speechless to think that something like this could happen.”
Yeah, no, all guns are always loaded – never point a gun at something you don’t intend to kill, because you probably will. Kill it, that is. I know that y’all know that, but, I guess if police academy instructors are shooting their students in the head, it bears repeating.
Carry on.

NOT funny, but certainly ironic.
Or DOH!
He’s a french model.
That’s one way to get new instructors for a training program.
Prayers out for the unfortunate student and his family.
[…] John Lilyea reminds me why I’m glad that the units I train with at Fort Knox use weapons that have been modified to make it impossible to fire real ammunition. Even the best checking will eventually miss something. […]
Damn. And it comes from the Authority that the left tells us to trust with our safety and well being like they do in Chicago!
Training at the Speed of Life has lots of pages at the back with thumbnail bios of people killed by this kind of half-baked “training”.

Happens … take the dumbass in the above linked video as an example.
All the rules were broken here!
Officers involved will all loose their jobs.
Apparently, someone did not make their weapon safe!
A we have a trainee with a bullet in his head!
Once again, tell me why they are the only ones who should have access to firearms?
That was hilarious Gravel. I’ll give the DEA agent credit for keeping with the safety lesson plan after he fired a round in a classroom full of kids. The video, it turns out, contradicted the initial report of the incident. It was reported that the Glock had no magazine in it. It did. So an investigation was launched–into who released the video!
As for the Baltimore Police training, a bunch of police have been suspended. Seems the brass did not even know there was training being conducted at the site the shooting occurred.
Can anyone tell me whether Artmy BT still includes night live fire, cover and move?
@9 As of 9ish years ago it did..
@10. Thanks. I would have thought not but if it was still part of training 9 or 10 years ago, it’s probably still part of the regimen.
The article says, “It’s unclear what exactly happened”. Yeah, no it isn’t, the “instructor” forgot to clear his weapon.
@8: I’m not going to argue the left-of-center-liberal position of these guys being the only ones to have guns, but it is a sad reality that these guys, despite occasional accidents/mishaps like this, are still better trained than most of the average citizens out there. Which accounts for some of that sentiment.
I watched a democratic strategist try to make the argument that armed civilians had no idea what they were doing with the firearms they owned and pose a greater danger to themselves and everyone around them. She got shredded rather quickly. It would have been almost painful to watch if she wasn’t such an arrogant twit.
I made this for you. I’m putting Mayor Rawlings-Blake up for the “understatement of the year” award.

Guns don’t kill people, Police Trainers do?
Unfortunately, it’s not the first time it’s happened either.
http://www.policemag.com/list/tag/training-accidents.aspx for just a short list…
exact same ting happened in Columbus GA this week. A recruit was shot in the head at the police range by an instructor. He is fine, but it just goes to show that the standards that allowed 9 people to be wounded by the NYPD are prevealent in all of our LEO agencies. Be careful out there.
Also, new drone medal outranks BSM with V? WTF!!!!

That’s a negative Ghost Rider. I would be willing to bet my next paycheck that an average civilian gun enthusiast expends more rounds at the range in any given year than an average police officer. I know some LEO’s who are gun enthusiasts in their personal time who go to the range quite often, but an average LEO only fires their weapon at their scheduled range qualification once or twice a year or whatever their department mandates. See NYPD for more details.
Now I truly understand why you all frequently post ‘get your boogerhook off the trigger’.
Back in the day the NYPD was twice a year for patrol officers once outdoors once indoors. Specialized units more often. You had the ability to go once a month on your own time with the department providing ammo. Most did not do the extra time on the range. When tactical scenarios were done you did not use your weapon you either got a non functioning rubber one or a painted one that could only shoot paint or blanks. Even using the simulator you own weapons were not used.

The full and correct quote is, “Keep your booger hook off the bang switch.” Sounds more colorful and memorable.
@22 – Thank you. I will remember that.
I’m still trying to work out which is a better insult: feckless fuckstick or fuckless feckstick. Let me know which works better.
@#23, either works equally well.
@24 – Thanks!
@#19 beat me to it. I shoot rifle and pistol 2 or 3 times a month at my local shooting range. During my less than stellar military career, I shot Expert with the M-16, M1911A and the 9mm service pistol. Hell, I qualified Expert with the M203 while at IOBC. I qualified with an accurized M-14 to be a member of my state composite high power rifle team and competed at regional FORSCOM matches at Ft. Riley and national matches at Camp Robinson, Arkansas.
I’ve had a CCL since 1996. I can shoot and I’ve never shot up a pickup truck with two Hispanic females thinking they were one black rougue cop. I’ve never shot myself in the leg in a public school classroom and I sure as hell have never shot anyone while conducting a firearms training session.
Too many of these highly trained professionals can’t be trusted with an Airsoft pistol much less a Glock or a Sig.
I’ll stand by my previous statement.
Well if they were SUPPOSED to be using Simunitions or something similar….but NO live ammo until it’s a live fire shoot.
This just stupefies me…I don’t know what to say. Just careless stupidity that is all.
1) How in the hell did the trainer go to lunch switch out mags then forget to switch them back.
2) What kind of safety procedures do they have that allowed this to happen.
3) I really hope that whoever was close to the “trainer” laid the boots to him when they started shooting live ammo.
If this is the kind of training they are receiving at their ranges hell what other crappy training are they receiving.
@22 That, sir, is absolutely hilarious; next time I take someone shooting, I’m using that.
In osut we didn’t do nic at night. We fired crew served at night. This was 2011. My buddy’s in 1st bct at Bragg he gets out in the field a lot.
I know the Rosewood facility very well. It is about 1500 FEET from my children’s school, and is in a RESIDENTIAL area. After it was abandoned, my son was a nighttime security guard there.
There is NO excuse for having live rounds EVEN IN THE SAME ROOM when someone is going to have a finger on the trigger. As an old (emphasis on “old”) NRA pistol trainer, who taught many folk to do dry fire practice, we would constantly tell everyone to think that any gun, loaded or unloaded, is to be treated as loaded, and don’t aim at what you don’t want to kill/destroy.
City police at their best.
Remember, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.
