Prez to announce reduction of Afghanistan forces in SOTU

| February 12, 2013

Rajiv Chandrasekaran, from the Washington Post writes that the president will announce a steep reduction in the US troop presence in Afghanistan by this time next year. 34,000 says Chandrasekaran of the 66,000 currently involved in operations there today;

The officers, including Gen. John R. Allen, who relinquished command of the war Sunday, had favored a reduction of no more than 25,000 troops this year, leaving about 40,000 in Afghanistan in 2014 to continue training local security forces and provide security for the country’s next presidential election, which is scheduled for April 2014.

“This is steeper than we had hoped for,” said a senior U.S. official aligned with the military leadership.

But many of the president’s top civilian national security advisers believe that removing about half of the troops this year will leave enough forces to train the Afghan army and assist it in providing security for the election.

So, just like the surge, when the CIA and the Generals told the president that if he wanted the surge to work, he’d need to send 66,000 troops and he sent 30,000 – now they tell him he needs to reduce the troop presence by now more that 24,000, so he ups the number because his civilian advisers tell him that’s good enough. Ya know, because Valerie Jarret knows more about what the commanders need in Afghanistan than those commanders.

Besides, the main goal here is withdrawal – not anything that can be construed to be a victory. Next thing you know he’ll be telling us that the Afghans are going to be providing security for the force we leave behind.

Common Sense

Why leave anyone behind to be sitting ducks? We should bring them ALL home TODAY.

I think you mean – “the main goal here is failure”

Having been on patrols where the ANSF did provide something resembling an attempt at security that last sentence is scary.

What is the ratio of support to operators there anyway, like 100:1? Going to have like 10 guys in country that carry guns and know what to do with them.

Community Organizer in Chief strikes again.

I feel bad for Afghan vets. They deserve better than to be let down by their own commanders. I wonder about the increased number of veteran suicides and whether their efforts of constantly being undermined by their own and politicians is contributing to it. I can easily see where over whelming shame and a feeling of hopelessness could come from.

The Fall of Saigon, circa 2013.

Yep! They wanted their “Vietnam”. By God it looks like they’ve finally got it.

I won’t watch the SOTU addresss. I just ate.

CI

It can’t [and quite obviously won’t] happen soon enough.

I hope I’m wrong, but I have a feeling instability will fire up in AFG once the bulk of the troops leave, and there won’t be enough there to provide for their own security, much less provide security for any kind of election.

The sad thing in a lot of draw downs the security has been offset by contractors. The problem is that contractors have frozen hiring totally due to sequestration. I foresee this going badly. You are announcing to the world that you are pulling troops out leaving the troop there vulnerable. Limited contractors and limited troop presence is a recipe for a lot of deaths. This admin doesn’t know when to shut its face. If they are going to pull them; pull them all.

@ Pinto Nag Yeah, and when the helicopters are loading from the roof, Obummer will probably decide it’s time for another visit to Las Vegas.

I did not watch The Speech last night (no TV, busy with something else), but GOP reaction this morning is one word: “disinformation”.

Not raise the deficit? Short term memory lost — not a good sign.

(Sigh) Analysis: pudding pops.
