Iran backing militias in Syria

| February 11, 2013

Of course, this shouldn’t be a surprise, given that Syria has been an ally of Iran since Desert Storm, but apparently the Iranians are supporting some pro-government militias in Syria according to the Washington Post;

A senior Obama administration official cited Iranian claims that Tehran was backing as many as 50,000 militiamen in Syria. “It’s a big operation,” the official said. “The immediate intention seems to be to support the Syrian regime. But it’s important for Iran to have a force in Syria that is reliable and can be counted on.”

Iran’s strategy, a senior Arab official agreed, has two tracks. “One is to support Assad to the hilt, the other is to set the stage for major mischief if he collapses.”

In related news, the Washington Times reports that some folks like that Iran will have a nuclear weapon by this summer;

Associated Press reports that diplomats with knowledge of Iran’s nuclear development program have found the nation developing reactor fuel with small amounts of its 20-percent uranium. The 20-percent product is only a small technical step from developing uranium worthy for weapons, AP reports.

Having 50,000 Syrian militiamen on their border might make Israel think twice before they take out Iran’s nuclear capabilities, so the western world has done the best they could to arm the Iranians with their inability to act beyond sternly-worded letters.

Well no shit. Syria is a proxy conflict between Iran and Saudi Arabia. It’s Saudis way of paying back Iran Shias for the failed take over of Bahrain during the Arab spring. Thawing nothing to do with freedom but rather yet another Shia/Sunni pissing contest in the region with heavy civilian cost.

And Iran being the big shit-stirrer in the little pond that they are, are going to keep doing it until someone stands up to them.

I just hope it isn’t too late, because God knows this administration isn’t up to the task.

Remember, boys and girls, back in the 2004 campaign/debates, Kerry was all in favor of giving the Iranians nuclear fuel.

We’re so screwed. But, worst case scenario, at least I’ll have a little warning if they (or whatever proxy group they use) decide to ship a nuke into Boston or Portland, I might have just about enough time to hunker down. Maybe.

Well guess how there getting to Syria, over Iraq’s air space.
