Reid won’t endorse Feinstein’s weapons bill
The Hill reports that Harry Reid stops short of supporting Diane Feinstein’s disarmament bill currently wending it’s way through the Senate halls;
Reid said he would bring gun-violence legislation to the floor and open it to a lengthy amendment process. But he declined to endorse the assault weapons ban introduced last week by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), which has the support of the 2nd- and 3rd-ranking Senate Democratic leaders.
“She’s talked to me about her assault weapons. The new one. She believes in it fervently and I admire her for that. I’ll take a look at that,” he said in response to a reporter’s question.
The article goes on to say that Republicans speculate that Reid won’t bring the bill to the Senate for a vote. But Reid says that’s not true. I think it will go to the Senate for a vote and it may even pass there, but it’s doubtful if Feinstein doesn’t give up some of her points. I don’t think the Senate, or the House for that matter, will support registering grandfathered weapons in any form.
Yeah, if you didn’t know it already, Reid is a coward. He knows that his party will pay a price for gun control legislation in his state and nationally, so he’s voting “present” so he doesn’t get blamed.
The problem for gun owners is in the States – Maryland for example is considering a proposal by idiot governor Marty O’Malley to ban scary black rifles and large capacity magazines, and apparently most of the morons in Maryland support the new bill, the same morons who returned O’Malley to office after he spent the surplus that Erlich left him in weeks, raising taxes a few months later to pay for his largesse. Somehow, O’Malley thinks that ending the death penalty in Maryland should be included in the citizen disarmament bill. That makes perfect sense to me :eyeroll:

Fortunately for us, this is bigger than Reid – there are several senators vulnerable if they support the bill – and they know it. They understand what happened in ’94, and I don’t think they’re stupid enough to repeat that same mistake.
Fienstein, however, has nothing to lose – since the majority of California supports her idiotic ideas.
None of this means that we should let up any pressure on our reps and senators – we still need to keep writing and calling them to let them know where the American people stand.
The text of the bill is still not available at Thomas (Library of Congress). Yes, they were overwhelmed last week with submissions, but really! How long does it take to scan a doc or post an electronically forwarded one??

As a Puerto Rican Maryland resident, it’s tough. Western MD, southern MD, and the Eastern Shore all tend to vote Republican (all those areas are more rural). Our numbers in these areas don’t outweigh the Democratic voters in the metro area between DC and Baltimore.
I contacted my senator, and now I have to contact my state legislators. O’Malley is ridiculous, and the fact that he admires Cuomo’s plan worries me greatly.
We DON’T need more laws, just look at the batches of laws already in place that were violated in each and every one of these mass shootings. Laws and Police alone don’t prevent crime, just look at Chicago!
Now Gabby Giffords is getting the full treatment in giving her testimony. The fawning media is all over it and the pic of her and her husband is just precious. Of course, no one is mentioning that the dynamic duo has started an anti-gun group, which should be first and foremost and she should be treated as a lobbyist; so when does a lobbyist for the NRA, NAGR, or GOA get to speak?
Ex-PH2: I’d be surprised if the bill, as described, passes the Senate – if it ever comes to a vote.
The current Senate split is 53/45/2, with the 2 voting as Democrats (Bernie the VT Commie and Lieberman).
I’d guess less than 5 Republicans will vote in favor, and possibly 0. So the Democrats can afford at most 9 votes against from their ranks and still have it pass the Senate. I’m guessing the actual number will be 6 or 7.
Democratic senators in the following states are up for reelection in 2014: AK, AR, CO, DE, HI, IL, IA, LA, MA, MI, MN, NH, NJ, NM, NC, OR, RI, SD, VA, and WV. Out of that list, the only ones I see that are safe enough to vote in favor are AR (Pryor – maybe), DE, HI, MA, NJ and RI. There are also a couple of more retiring that might do the same. I’d guess the rest tell Reid “No way in hell – don’t you dare let that bill come up for a vote before Dec 2014!”

Didn’t Wayne LaPierre call Reid a champion of gun rights circa 2010? He’s actually got a halfway decent record on 2nd Amendment voting. I’m not trying to be overly charitable, but is it possible that he’s going to be caught between how he represents Nevada and his role as Majority Leader?
Feinstein’s bill is not going anywhere, not without dropping a lot of the crap. They probably feel safe on the list, though, since they seemed to just photocopy New Jersey’s.
The senator from MN that is up for re-election in 2014 is none other than Al Franken, I’m sure that he would vote in favor of it. What else do you expect from a state that elected a former wrestler to be Governor, a comedian to the US Senate, and is the only state to be able to say that it hasn’t voted red for president since Nixon? I just depressed myself again.
Claire McCaskill has kept her trap shut since one of her staffers said she supported a ban, but I think that she would fear setting foot back in Missouri outside of St. Louis if she voted on one. She isn’t popular here, hell she won reelection by default and that was because she put a ton of money into Akin’s primary campaign.
Hondo, as for Michigan, Levin will be 78 when he runs in ’14. And, he’ll run, the Levin family thinks that they own our politics. Well, to be fair, because of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb county, they do. I can feel #8’s pain, it’s the same here, take away East Lansing, the I-75 corridor and the I-94 corridor, and we’d have a decent state.
I don’t see the R’s coming up with anyone who would even want to run against him, much less devote the time and energy to run a decent campaign. If Stabenow can get re-elected, we’re pretty much doomed here.
I know this is a bit of wishful thinking on my part, but if there were some serious effort put into getting guns out of the hands of criminals, instead of tying the hands of legitimate gun owners….
