I got this in my email this morning from Huffington Post;
The video they show with the story is heavily edited by Newsy to make it appear as if a father who just lost his son in the Newtown shooting was heckled by pro-gun activists at the meeting;
But here’s the whole video picked up at Twitchy. The exchange happens at about 15 minutes.
Actually, he asks the whole roomful of people who needs semiautomatic rifles with large capacity “clips” (his word, not mine). After looking around the room, he says “see, no one can answer” and then he gets an answer from some people “2d Amendment”. No one heckled him – they were answering his question…a question to which he fully expected an answer.
MSNBC’s Morning Joe thought it was a good idea to mischaracterize the exchange as well;

Yahoo news, if it can be called such, is awash with those that are defending this poor man. They are railing against the evil NRA and Assault rifles that spray thousands of heat seeking armor piercing explosive tipped 100 caliber rounds from its ultra high capacity clip pew pew pew. I gave up trying to educate the idiots, I would have more luck teaching my cat to use the toilet.
I’ll heckle this disgusting asshole who’s using his dead son as a pawn to try to deny Americans their constitutional rights. It’s despicable jerks like this who mount their moral superiority horse and use personal tragedy to defend their un-defendable positions to limit liberty. Just because his son died doesn’t equate to if only more laws were enacted he might have not have been killed. Personal liberties aren’t put oh hold just because it might save a person in a hypothetical. Personal liberty comes at the cost of security.

I feel sorry for the guy. We all do. Now, what makes him an authority on guns and what, if anything, gives his opinion regarding guns and gun laws any greater weight than yours or mine? Curiously, he says toward the end, “Ah, not to say that it, you know, mass assaults like that couldn’t have happened in another way but I–you need to cut down on the guns….”
Hard cases make bad law.
Too many folks are letting emotion drive the legislation. Every time I have made a choice with emotion instead of logic I was looking at an ass whipping either physically or some other way. I’m sick to death of mealy mouthed liberal asshats who have never picked up a gun telling me how evil they are.
I just met with my state house rep today. She’s disinclined to do any “regressive” 2nd Amendment legislation, but that’s Pennsylvania. I have a sneaking suspicion any federal legislation is going to be geared at bringing wayward states like ours in line. What’s that Chinese curse, “may we live in interesting times?”
Someone’s agenda spewed forth at the expense of truth. The gun control crowd could never win a debate based on fact so facts must be altered I.O.T. support what they think should be true. How can anyone argue with that logic? Bunch O’ Assholes. All of them.

I saw the exchange. Now first, the father should be respected in terms of presenting his case about his child. Second, the moment he threw the question out there while looking over his shoulder … he invited, solicited, attracked, and almost demanded a response he (and others) were not willing to hear!
The editting by the MSM on this story makes me sick!

There is no arguing with emotional pain. It gets hard when those that are suffering target YOU for their outburst, for whatever reason. They’re hurting, and they fully intend to 1.) find someone to blame for their pain, and 2.) spread the pain as far and wide as possible. There is no reasoning with a wounded animal, and the only course is to walk away, and continue to work for your own interests. That may sound heartless, but if you expect this man or any like him to suddenly “wake up” and be able to rationally identify the cause of their misery, you’ll be waiting until hell freezes in a solid block, because it will never happen.
PintoNag: that is true. However, it does not give him any greater moral authority. Nor should he be granted carte blanche to spout truly ill-advised idiocy without being challenged. The latter is tantamount to conceding the point.

Like all Americans, I was horrified as the tragedies of Friday, December 14th unfolded in Newtown, Connecticut. The deplorable act of violence that took the lives of innocent children and adults is beyond reason, and I pray that, in time, the families of the victims and the people of that community are able to find peace.
As you no doubt recall, we were all reminded of the evil that exists in our world when six students were shot, three fatally, at Chardon High School in Geauga County on February 27th, 2012. In the aftermath, the heroic stories of the first responders, teachers and staff who acted swiftly and selflessly to protect others showed true courage.
Since that tragic event, and in the wake of the recent tragedy in Newtown, the absolute necessity for school officials, parents, students and first responders to be trained and practiced in responding to these unthinkable crimes is of utmost importance. Various state and local agencies, including the Ohio Office of Homeland Security and the Ohio Department of Education, have worked collaboratively to implement, review and drill response plans. Moreover, these occasions of violence and heartache should give us all pause to think about how we treat each other, and the value we as a society place upon every life.
With regard to calls for legislation in response to these events, it is my belief that we will be best served by enforcing those laws that currently exist. And, in the weeks and months that follow, we should learn as much as possible about how this happened, and what steps we can take, including mental health awareness and school safety protocols, to guard against the senseless loss of innocent life ever again.
I appreciate your taking the time to write. Please join me and my family in continuing to keep the communities of Chardon and Newtown, and all innocent victims of violence, in our prayers. Thank you.
While I won’t begrudge this man his grief of the tragic loss of his son, I must say that if he wasn’t willing to hear an answer to a question he really didn’t want to hear, then don’t ask it. IMO, as far as the hearing/committee, their minds are already made up and there won’t be honest and open debate. The Huffington Post and MSNBC panders to emotion, and it comes to no surprise that these agencies of propeganda edited what was said to achieve thier end.
Beyond that, everyone has become an expert on assault/military weapons. Mr. Heslin was pretty sure of himself that “assault weapons” were used at Columbine, and that they were legally purchased. Fact of the matter is, they used a TEC-9 and shotguns – all of which were illegally purchased for them.
I’m not saying this guy is a liar, because I hate liars. But what I will say is that people need to get their fuggin’ facts strait.
For about a century now propaganda has been honed and refined by manipulators in government and the media. Goebbels, despite his evil, certainly understood how the masses could be influenced-and it wasn’t through reason and cool calculation. Our opponents know that-right now-they are losing the debate and they are pulling out all the stops. At present, they do not have the critical mass that they need to push their agenda through, but they are constantly chipping away. When we say “Molon Labe” we must be completely serious in our intent-it cannot be just an empty phrase-ultimately it may come to just that.
He was not heckled, he asked a question, he was given an answer. There was not a large outburst of insults. It was a few people who spoke up for the rights of all of us.
Why is it the media does not spotlight the father who spoke out against the rush to grab guns?? Why is it? I think we all know the answer, and what they did with this incident is a prime example of the outright biases and lengths that they are willing to go to to manufacture bull shit.
Newtown is the crisis those on the left have been waiting for to manipulate and take advantage of. It is up to each and every one of us not to allow them to get away with it.
Any gun control proposal, no matter how loonie, will from now on be characterized with trembling lip as “it’s for the buh-buh-buh-BAYBEEES” and anyone daring to speak against it will be characterized as a cold-hearted baby killer. Reality be damned.
Why is the emotion always on the side of gun control? Why doesn’t some enterprising politician, like Rand Paul, gather some of the 2.5 million people who have been SAVED by guns in the past year? They far outnumber the people killed by guns.
How about an ad full of people who were assaulted but survived? “I wish I had a gun”.
The side that depends on emotion instead of logic in these issues seems to be much better at getting their message out.
@19 I know your question is rhetorical, but there is an answer, and it’s this: logical actions with good outcomes aren’t news. That is why you don’t hear about them. It’s only the messed up actions with tragic results that feed the need for “dirty laundry” (with a nod in Phil Collins’ direction for that oh-so-true song).

Got as much sympathy for every family who has a loss, no matter the circumstances, as everyone else here or elsewhere. That includes the mothers whose sons are killed in drug turf wars, fathers whose daughters are killed by drunks, every homicide in the country without regard for the means, parents whose children are abducted, ranchers killed along our southern border, and all the senseless deaths which occur in this country each year. And I think that we all know that anyone in the rewest stages of their grief cannot be expected to display logic or what they might consider rational behavior.
That anyone or any group would parade before the public someone in the midst of grief is dispicable. The media has developed a habit in recent years of seeking out persons in grief with more and more regularity. It is disgusting.
On the other hand, if a grieving individual voluntarily steps onto a public podium (as opposed to a media ambush), they are asking for scrutiny. While they may not yet be completely responsible for the decision to do so due to their more emotional than usual state while grieving, it is still their decision. Their grief is no greater than anyone else who suffers a loss and we owe them no more or less sympathy.
As for the media cutting and pasting to create the message they want to air? Oh, golly. It’s been going on for so long that we really should expect it, shouldn’t we?
@22. Yes, OWB, it’s Sandy Hook redux for the media and other lefties. It was, “How dare you oppose gun laws after the massacre of those children!” And now it is, “Have you no shame? How heartless to attack a grieving father!”

Funny, and maybe I’m just getting old, or whatever, but I don’t seem to recall this kind of pandering (sorry, gotta call it as I see it) in the immediate aftermath of Columbine or VA Tech. Granted the ages of the victims in these cases does have somewhat of a bearing, but frankly, barely six weeks in is not enough time, not NEARLY enough time, for the mourning process to have run its course.
I would think that cooler heads would prevail, but as a certain someone said and lived by, “Never let a crisis go to waste.”

At least, in the short and edited video, all I heard was a call for more enforcement of existing laws
@15: They also had a HiPoint 995 Carbine with 10 round magazines, that were legal due to the AWB. The 995 is a 9mm semi-auto and when Harris was found, he had 13 10 round magazines on him for the HiPoint. So, even limiting the magazine capacity has no bearing on bad guys doing bad things. What the anti-gun types want is for the law abiding to be severely limited and for the criminals to continue on unabated.
I noticed that any mention of this has mysteriously disappeared on CNN, HuffPo, MSNBC , and others after they were called out on it.
