Iran celebrates storming US embassy
Yeah, this probably won’t help the Obama Administration. Remember when he told us before the last election that he was going to engage with the Iranian government – you know that engagement we’re still waiting to see four years later. The world was going to see us differently, right?
Well Tman sends us a link to the Associated Press report on Iran’s celebration of the 33rd anniversary of when they stormed the US embassy in Tehran in 1979 and held the US staff for 444 days;
Speaking to a crowd of thousands outside the building that once housed the embassy, Gen. Mohammad Reza Naqdi said 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of gold would be given to anyone who found a regime “more criminal than the United States.”
But, he added, that would be impossible, because the Guard has “already done the research and found Washington is the worst on earth.”
So yeah, this administration has really improved the way the world sees us. This little celebration also reminds voters of the recent assault on our consulate in Benghazi and how the attack on the Tehran embassy brought down the Carter Administration for their ineptness at handling the crisis. This administration is equally impotent. The election will be held a scant few days short of two months since the Benghazi attack and this administration has done nothing. Two months after 9-11-2001, the Taliban was on the run. US intelligence knows where training camps in Libya are, and those camps are still operating.
And the source of all of the jihadist death and destruction in the world is calling us the worst criminals in the world. I can hardly wait to vote.

It won’t help the Obama administration, but I don’t see it ‘hurting’ them either. This is a non-issue. It’s the lovely Iranian government seeking to keep the focus of its citizens outward rather than inward. In other words, just another day in Iran.

Remember kids, this is the same America-hating Iranian leadership that recently endorsed Obama’s re-election.
Carter was a kindly president who just didn’t get it. When the country needed a shot in the arm, he talked of the nation’s malaise. When Iran grabbed our people, he JUST KNEW negotiating would bear fruit. 444 days later, before Reagan got to unpack at 1600, it was over. Carter traveled to Germany as a private citizen to greet the releasees. He reminds people of obama to the extent that he will feed the dog that will bite its feeder and really just doesn’t get it.
I am a Democrat and a supporter of President Obama, but I will be the first to say that President Jimmy Carter was weak at best in dealing with the Iranians. He should have told Iran the very day that our embassy was stormed that they had better release our diplomats ASAP or their country would be turned into a fricking parking lot. They would have probably done so. Think Obama is another Jimmy Carter? Admiral William McRaven, the head of Seal Team 6, gave strong praise of the way the President dealt with the killing of OBL. He has also had scores of terrorist leaders killed with drone attacks in the past four years.

I remember all of this. “Nightline” started running every night, with Ted Koppel at the helm, running a nightly count of days those people were held hostage by the Iranian government.
What irked me the most was that while I was at Great Lakes in 1972, I ran into large numbers of Iranian sailors being trained at the Service Schools Command because the US had an agreement to train the Shah’s military, which ended when he was overthrown and forced out of Iran, seven years later.
So guess who’s in charge of the Iranian military all these years later?
And guess where they got their training?

Here’s the problem with this. If he didn’t and called Jimmie’s bluff, what then? Would he have made good on his threat? I don’t think so.

Lived in Tehran, Iran from 1977-79. My dad retired from the Army in ’77 and then was hired on by Raytheon and assigned there. The pro American Shah of Iran was in power, but his days were numbered. My family and I carried on with a comfortable normal existence with American amenities, were authorized PX/commissary privilages, we watched American TV programs, and moved about as we pleased. Tehran looked very much like Los Angeles – sprawling metropolis ringed by mountains, clogged w/ cars and people.
It was sometime after Thanksgiving 1978 when my homeroom teacher at the Tehran American School informed the classroom that school was being suspended due to civil unrest in the city. Our teacher hugged and kissed each of us, and she said classes would resume when things got back to normal – that never happened. We celebrated our final Christmas in Iran with a huge party…then events moved fast for preparations to evacuate.
We were authorized one piece of luggage per person and everything else including pets had to be abandoned. The Tehran airport was a madhouse as tens of thousands of people from all over the world were getting their one way ticket out of the country.

Ex-PH2@7, not that I know, but I would speculate that those that received training in the US military schools were probably purged, imprisoned and/or exiled if they were senior military at the time, and the juniors bumped up into positions of authority after taking a “loyalty oath” to Khomeini. Just speculating, but that is the template for all coups.
That’s possible, Hack, but those that I ran into at Great Lakes and later at Philadelphia had very anti-American sentiments that weren’t voiced unless they thought no one was listening. I believe the only training they did not get was in nukes.
