Seattle woman finds IED on her car

| October 11, 2012

H1 sends a link to an article from Seattle that is a little skimpy on details, but a woman found an explosive device on her fuel tank while she was out doing her errands. The police say she removed the device and put in on her car and then called the police.

I don’t think I would have removed it. I’m no demo expert – except that I know how to apply the “P” principle to destroy stuff (P = plenty).

Police Cmdr. Mike Hirman tells The Seattle Times that officers confirmed the item was an improvised explosive device. No one was hurt.

The woman found a fused device with tape around it attached to her gas cap. Police say she took it off and put it on top of her car, then called police.

A bomb squad neutralized the device.

I’m checking my gas cap as soon as I get off work.

I’m kind of surprised this doesn’t happen more often

My guess (using my MK 1 Mod 3 MIL SPEC Crystal Ball): she is the wife or girlfriend of a OMG member.

I thought Daoud was getting indicted today in Chicago. Must be one of his friends in the great NWPAC.

I am always dubious when I read about “explosive devices” found in the US. For instance when we had the big bomb scare in KC a couple weeks ago it turned out to be much ado about nothing. I wonder if it was a real device or someone had just cleverly put together some wires and fuses. It just screams of a hoax to me…

That is a “stalker” or someone possessing a “fatal attraction”. I’ll put $20 on it being an ex-whatever or some guy/gal she turned down one night while out with girlfriends….

And I’m willing to bet, OWB will agree within a few degree’s anyway…Maybe even Beat n Release and UpNorth too…

Well, since you asked, street.

Not at all sure about this one. Your scenario sounds most likely, however we really don’t have enough info to make an even sorta semi educated guess.

We know she was young enough to pump her own gas, but even I do that and I’m OLD! She didn’t immediately recognize it as something which she should report to anyone, presumably. I’m picturing something along the lines of, “Hey, what is this thing stuck in here, “takes it off her gas cap (or takes it off WITH her gas cap), lays it down, then sees something about it which she realizes needs to be reported to authorities.

Could she have concurrently remembered a threat someone had made against her? Sure. Could it have been a prank? Sure. Something placed there simply because her car was handy? Sure.

In other words, I would like to know for sure when was the last time she had looked at her gas cap, the model of the car (is the cap inside a locked panel, for instance), where it has been parked since she last got gas, threats she may have received, other criminal activities near where her car has been parked lately, etc.

But, police may be supporting your theory, street. They are reported to not believe it to be a random act: http://www.komonews.com/news/local/Police-IED-found-on-car-at-Auburn-gas-station-173614641.html

And there’s a pic of the car at that link, which answers a few questions.

Instinct my friend, instinct.

I had been a 12 Bravo,…so as a copper, some of the other locals PDs would call me when they got a pipe bomb call or something. I kept telling them that I was NOT EOD, but they’d call me over anyway.
One time a deputy found a pipe bomb in a high school…so he picked it up and walked towards me and said: “what should I do with this?”
I told him to stand there and hold it while the rest of us left the f–ing building.
Never move anything that may be an “IED” etc….

I’m not going to be even a little bit surprised if we learn that she put it there herself to try to frame an ex for something.

As a retired Army EOD Tech, I can say that crap happens all too often. Working in DC, we were called to Arlington to back up the Arlington PD on aa possible IED. Sure as shit, I found 2 pipe bombs waiting for my big do af the de-armer, only to find out that one of the Arlinton PD was riding around town with a third one in her trunk! needless to say, she was called, ordered to stop where she was and we responded to her location where I scared the shit out of her.

Sorry – “big dose”

Watching “Bomb Patrol Afghanistan” was VERY educational.

DO NOT TOUCH IT. EVER. CALL THE POLICE.

#14 My dad has a fairly old poster now of a number of different explosives from RPGs, mortars, bomblets and mines. It says in a few different languages to never approach them, never pick them up and to clear the area. Always liked that poster as a kid. Fun times growing up around EOD
