Feds find it easy to get phony state IDs

| September 24, 2012

The Washington Times reports that Government Accountability Office (GAO) investigators were successful every single time they tried to get phony IDs in three unnamed states where they tried it. Using forged birth certificates, they were questioned only once by a single clerk who still didn’t stop the process of issuing IDs.

A full verification system that would help states perform checks on out-of-state identities could be a decade away, the investigators said in their report.

The auditors also faulted the Homeland Security Department, which it said has failed to tell states how to carry out key parts of Real ID, the 2005 law that is supposed to tighten rules on how states issue identification cards and driver’s licenses.

In its official response, the Homeland Security Department rejected auditors’ recommendations, saying states are free to collaborate and come up with their own state-to-state systems.

So, I guess the clock has been turned back to September 10th, 2001. Has Homeland Security been successful at any task it was mandated to handle?

Overall, federal agencies pointed fingers at one another.

The Social Security Administration, which controls the databases for its all-important numbers, said it was up to Homeland Security and the Transportation Department to deal with driver’s license laws, while Homeland Security said birth certificate fraud is a problem for the Health and Human Services Department.

The GAO said states need national leadership to encourage coordination and that Homeland Security officials aren’t providing it.

But Homeland Security was created to cut through all of the bureaucratic bullshit that was at the root of the failures of government that caused 9/11. All it’s creation did was add to the number of fingers being pointed.

I almost can’t blame those agencies for pointing around the table saying “It’s not MY responsiblity”. Almost.

To be certain, RealID is going to be a huge shit sandwich to whomever is forced to eat it.

The good old D.C> circle jerk. Then there’s this gem, “A full verification system that would help states perform checks on out-of-state identities could be a decade away, the investigators said in their report”. Why is that, aren’t they supposed to have databases that tell them who belongs to which SS number? Isn’t DHS supposed to have a database of people who aren’t legally in the country? What’s so Friggin’ hard about setting up a “Full verification system”, if you have the motivation to set one up?
Or, is this the current regime, making sure that voter ID laws mean nothing?

I blame bureaucracy.

One, nobody’s going to put their ass on the line and own this project because;

Two, the SSN thing is a total charlie-foxtrot. There are SO many fake names attached to fake social security numbers…where do you start?

Three, that money’s gonna have to come out of someone’s agency funding. Since Obama’s regime isn’t too terribly worried about verifying the identities of anyone seeking to get into the country, they’re not putting anyone’s feet to the fire to get it done.

So, they are saying that it isn’t their responsibility. When the shite hits the fan, they are going to be pointing their fingers everywhere but at themselves, too.

No wonder NH wouldn’t let me use my CA DL as ID when I got my NH DL…and that was 2006.
