Emperor Hirohito of Japan announced Japan’s surrendered in a radio address to the Japanese nation, ending World War II. The surrender was formalized on 2 September 1945 in the famous ceremony on the USS Missouri.

Thanks to both my grandfathers, one who came home and one who didn’t. To all my uncles, one who was never the same and all the rest who went on to be great men. There’s no hyperbole in The Greatest Generation. Your contributions were big and and small but you’re all giants in my mind.
