Homeless Guy busted for awesome hideout

| August 3, 2012

This guy is not only resourceful but I’m willing to place him in a separate category of California citizens for his outright patriotism. What really surprises me is that they busted him for cultivating 8 marijuana plants in a state plagued by methamphetamine production and use. You’d think the already packed penal system doesn’t need to house a guy who just wants to smoke a little weed and hang out in the forest… At least he’s not protesting Capitalism or expecting the state to pay his bills for him.

An elaborate and illegal camouflaged residence, outfitted with bunk beds and a barbecue patio, has been discovered near a Los Angeles County animal refuge.

Eight months ago, Robert Downs, 51, set up a small structure in the woods near the Tujunga Ponds Wildlife Sanctuary in Sunland, Calif. To hide his home from police, Downs, who was previously homeless, sprayed it with camouflage paint and cut down nearby trees, said Johnie Jones, a deputy in the Parks Bureau of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The structure, which Downs built with materials he bought at Home Depot, contained four bunk beds built into the walls, tables, shelves and fire extinguishers. Outside were a rock patio, a barbecue grill and more tables. An American flag was draped over Downs’ bed.

It bothered me the way that they were making fun of him.

TSO

That is a totally sweet house he built there.
I’d be all over it. And the flag makes it a nice touch.

NHSparky

The only reason he got busted was the state of California doesn’t give a shit if you shoot up, snort, or toke up in the middle of a LA City Council meeting (as a certain former member used to do on breaks–allegedly.)

They got pissed because they didn’t get their cut of taxes.

It seems that i read something somewhere about the same thing happening in east california only the people in question had built a house on their on property just did not have the permits. It had something to do with an “un agenda 21″ being enforced in the usa. ” Probably just as post #3 said they did not get their cut”

Hondo

Yeah, I’m guessing he didn’t have proper permits and likely also didn’t own the land. The article says the house was in a public park.

I think it was the flag that downed him. If he had been flying a crescent moon or Bandera de Mexico he’d be kicked back instead of kicked out.

Love how the announcer calls it a “WildFIRE sanctuary” What a bonehead.

OWB

Still trying to figure out the definition of “homeless.” Until they tear down his home…

Yat Yas 1833

OWB, made anymore ‘pudding stuff’ lately? I’ve been havin’ a hankerin’…

I agree! Seems to me he has a pretty good home right now! According to Merriam-Webster, “homeless” means, “having no home or permanent place of residence”. It sure looks like Mr. Downs had both until the commissars of the People’s Republik of Kalifornia stepped in?

The Republik is bankrupt and they’re worried about this guy? How about the thousands of illegals sucks their coffers dry!

Even on your own property, people have to be very aware of state laws that govern use and storage of water or other resources.

The state of Oregon requires permit from Water Resource Department to store water on property. Man from Jackson County sentenced to 30 days in jail and $1500 fine for storing rain water in 3 reservoirs on his property. He is appealing. Apparently he did previously apply for a permit and was approved by Water Resource Department, but was reversed by state court. Oregon considers all water publicly owned – even “diffuse water” rain water and snowmelt.

This is what it has come to. If your digs out in the woods aren’t 3000 sq. feet or better and solid cedar with a swimming pool and stables, you’re considered a nutjob…and treated accordingly.

Yat Yas 1833

PintoNag, please say it ain’t so! Mom’s place in Payson is only 1200 sq ft! Is Gila county gonna come this bulldozers and raze it?!? My grandkids love going to “nana’s little house”!

PintoNag

Depends on the area and the community mindset, Yat Yas. We have small, very rural areas here where some of the homes would fit in a two-car garage. And we have some million-dollar cabins, also. They mix fairly well (so far) because that’s what folks expect here.

Yat Yas 1833

PintoNag, WHEW! Thankfully we’re on the south side of Payson where all the cabins and trailers are small. The most goodest thing about mom’s place is there are approx. 10 acres of state land that won’t be developed! The “grands” run across the street and go nuts for hours. They come back sweaty, dirty, scratched, bumped, bruised and exhausted but SMILING! I thank God for rural America where kids can still be kids.

PintoNag

It sounds like your grandkids have it good. I think all kids should grow up with woods to play in.

My best friend went out to get in her car and go to work the other morning, in time to watch a mountain lion saunter across her front yard and off into the woods.

That guy in California probably would have been considered a good neighbor here! 🙂

Gerdo

Is it my shoddy hearing or did the female news caster call it a military house?

Just Plain Jason

For some reason this reminds me of this winter when the city bulldozed a homeless camp in the woods. People (including me) got pissed because they were messing with homeless and leaving the occupy camp alone. I really have a soft spot for homeless guys like this, because they are actually doing something and you aren’t going to tell me that LA county doesn’t have bigger issues.

Ex-PH2

@Gerdo, she’s a bimbo. I wouldn’t worry about what she said. But I always hope that some day, people like those two dimwits will be on the receiving end of those kinds of comments.
