Even Tiger Woods wants to be a SEAL

| February 29, 2012

Well, that’s according to his swing coach, Hank Haney in his new book The Big Miss according to SkyNews.

Mr Haney wrote: “I thought ‘Wow. Here is Tiger Woods, the greatest athlete on the planet, maybe the greatest athlete ever, right in the middle of his prime, basically ready to leave it all behind for a military life’.”

According to Mr Haney, Woods undertook dozens of trips to naval bases across the country “in a programme that approximated the training for a Navy Seal candidate”.

“To my knowledge, he did training in parachuting, self-defence, urban-warfare simulations and shooting,” he claims.

“I never heard of Tiger doing any training in the water with the Seals, but he was already a pretty accomplished diver.”

Well, at least he doesn’t walk around with a Trident on his golf bag. One of our ladies sent us the link yesterday and I can’t remember for the life of me which one it was, so sorry.

Let me get this straight. Tiger Woods thought that he could become a seal based on what? He has a very public record of infidelity and shady behavior. Security clearance should be ruled out. The military isn’t the place to let these celebrities play when they get bored.

Ben

Before we get out the torches and pitchforks, Woods hasn’t said or publicized anything about this. This was his freaking swing coach running his pie hole.

AW1 Tim

This is likely a story well thought out and then put out by his PR team.

Tiger Woods is a human douchebag and feels that his image needs some sort of rejuvenation. There’s a new movie out featuring Navy SEAls, and TOTUS is certainly going to be trying to ride their coattails during the election.

Thus, it’s a natural that a lying, marriage-destroying self-adulating crapweasel like Tiger Woods would seek to compare himself with the sort of men that’s he’s not fit to lick the boots of. Actually, Woods and TOTUS aren’t fit to lick their boots, but hey……. if that isn’t obvious then it’s likely you’re already a leftist and beyond hope.

Just my personal opinions and nothing more.

SSG Medzyk

ummm……athlete?

Tman

Well, his dad was S.F.

Jacobite

I’m with Medzyk…

Athlete? WTF?

LastAllUCanB

As much as I hate marital infidelity and all around douchiness (is that even a word?), my impression of the article was that it was back before his adultery issues and jackassery. It was back when he was still the best in the world. So who knows, maybe the military would have kept him on the straight and narrow.

I’m not saying it would have, and I’m not saying he wouldn’t have washed out of basic. His choices are his own and he has to deal with the consequences, however if this was before his descent into jackassery, then it might have gone the other way.

The story is in a book called “The Big Miss,” by Tiger’s ex-coach Hank Haney.

It sounds to me like the military did a little baby-sitting of a visiting…celebrity. A picture on one of the sport sites shows Tiger on the top of a military vehicle, in a white polo shirt and slacks. Somehow I don’t think he was wearing that when he “trained” with them??

Neil Karlstadt

I’m glad a couple of people already pointed this out, but I wouldn’t call a golfer, any golfer, the greatest anything relating to physical prowess (so to speak). Any “sport” in which John Daly can be successful is not a sport at all.

I guess some argument can be made for Tiger’s “physical prowess,” (heh heh) but nothing approaching what this blowhard claims.

Joe

Ever hear anyone say i was within a ball hair of joining the marines but didn’t because (insert reason)

NHSparky

Joe–I’m pretty sure you never said that because 1–only one of your balls dropped and 2–hair never grew on that one anyway.

Old Trooper

@13: I was going to go airborne, but my nutsack was too big 😛

j/k

I did civilian skydiving, until I finally came to my senses and the old adage about birdshit and fools stormed into my conscience.

NHSparky

Then I retract my previous statement. My apologies, Not-Joe.

Other Joe–still applies to you, fuckstick. Just thought I’d throw that one in there in case you decide to do your daily “swoop and poop.”

NHSparky

And Jonn–I don’t know to many of those, “I was gonna, but…” types, regardless of service. Either you did, or you didn’t.

Stu

OOOOOO Secret training exercises. Like he would have just went straight off to the teams, special exemptions and all, you know cause he is so special he wouldn’t even have to do the little things everybody else does like bootcamp, A school, and the selection process and the pre-Seal course.

I was Army (Just a red leg that got stuck in a MP mission) so I am not in the know of the selction process for the Seals but am sure I am close to what he wouldn’t have to do since he is such a “athlete”.

Maybe if it didn’t work out (Like he couldn’t swim for miles) he could have just switched over to a Ranger Bn, or one of the SF Groups, you know since he is such an athlete and all.

Hell why didn’t someone just pin some E-9 rank or better yet just make him a Flag Officer and give him a Command since his is sooooo special.

Beretverde

In 1968 when the movie “The Green Berets” came out- everyone wanted to be a Green Beret. When the movie “Top Gun” came out- everyone wanted to be a fighter pilot. Woods: stop talking about it and do it. Stop wanting to do it… as NIKE says- “Just do it!”

This sounds like a bit of Walter Mittyism with some BS PR for sales, tossed in. How many guys get all pumped up at first (knee jerk) then bail? Fuck the Tiger.

Hondo

Jonn, NHSparky: that claim is usually BS, but not always. I know of one indiv who never applied for a prestigious training course because he didn’t qualify medically – and he wasn’t willing to falsify records or ask people to help him cheat his way in. Since he couldn’t qualify legit he decided he really didn’t want it bad enough to sell his integrity.

Flagwaver

I’ve heard of celebrities and athletes training with the Special Forces for PR stunts and good publicity (for both the civies and SFs). Sure, most of y’all think it is a joke, but it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. Not to mention, the actors and athletes come out of it in better shape with a greater respect for the military. And really, how is that a bad thing?

Just Plain Jason

First of all I’m not going to defend his marital infidelity, but I think thats in the past let it go. Norm MacDonald has a reason why he is statistically the most faithful man on the planet. The guy grew up a military brat and never really had the chance to do what a lot of us took for granted. It’s kind of a prince and the pauper thing if you think about it. Hell he was going to be a golfer at age 3 when he went on the tonight show. His Dad was SF and he grew up around a lot of that. Now to walk away from everything he had at the peak of his career to become a SEAL, which he may or may not have been able to do, would have been hard. Hell if your son was the worlds greatest…whatever making hundreds of millions would you say, walk away and become a soldier? Hell no. At least I wouldn’t. Now if his money and name gets him the ability to hang out with some cool guys and do some cool guy stuff and maybe those guys get to play a round or two with Tiger Woods then hell yeah. What’s wrong with that? Sounds like his former swing coach is being a little winer to me.

Beretverde

@#21… I remember a guy by the name of Pat Tillman. He “manned up” and walked away from the big bucks. Another guy was Ted Williams… but he had to leave it all behind him on TWO occasions and it wasn’t his choice! He didn’t bitch or whine either.

Hondo

Rocky Blier and Roger Staubach also come to mind.

SSG Medzyk

Here’s a list of REAL athletes that bucked up and went to war: http://www.baseballinwartime.com/those_who_served/those_who_served_atoz.htm

Golf is not only not a sport, it ain’t athletic. When great grandpa can do 18 holes in an afternoon….

PintoNag

There’s an update of sorts on this. On the Fox Sports section of MSN, there is an article that quotes the SEALs as denying they ever did any training with Tiger.

MCPO NYC USN(Ret.)

Lets be clear. Tiger Woods does not have what it takes to be U.S. Navy Sailor, let alone a U.S. Navy SEAL. The U.S. Navy Core Values are: Honor, Courage, and Commitment. He would not pass the Core Values test.

Jacobite

@21

Beretverde beat me to it. Pat Tillman walked away from a multi-million dollar contract because of the debt of service he felt he owed the country.

Self serving narcissists like Tiger don’t even come close to the deserving a fraction of the accolades they seek.

Kevin

Not a big Tiger fan, however, he did pay tribute to the military in the speech linked below without ever mentioning Obama or training to be a Seal:

Beretverde

@#26 Absodamnlutely! I couldn’t say it any better.

Just Plain Jason

Wow I guess you think I have been living under a rock my entire life…
I guess you could have missed my point a little more. First of all we don’t know him from anything. How many of us WANT our kids to go through the same crap that we went through? Do you think that Earl Woods wanted his son to do the same thing on top of all the money?

At this point all we know is that his former swing coach is trying to sell books and this is a way to do it.

Jacobite

The fact that I disagree with your point doesn’t mean I missed it sir. Or do you assume that your point was so all encompassing and universally correct that there’s no room for valid dissent?

“How many of us WANT our kids to go through the same crap that we went through?”

Well I can’t speak for anyone else here, but I for one don’t have a problem with my son going through a lot of the same ‘crap’ I did, it made me what I am today, and frankly I’m proud of my accomplishments.

Parents who try to coddle their kids, or ‘grease the skids’ for them are often times doing them a disservice in my opinion. The growth and personal development won through overcoming diversity and hardship can’t be bought or taught, it has to be lived.

Do I know what Earl Woods wanted for his son? No, and neither do you.

fred

Golfer? I hope you didn’t miss the Mayakoba Golf Classic this weekend. Everyone looked like they enjoyed sunny beautiful Mexico! Especially first time PGA Tour winner, John Huh. Final round wrap-up video right here: http://bit.ly/xRahcO
