We need more articles like this one from Reuters about veterans saving the economy and fewer of the crazed murderous types;
Companies are only too glad they can turn to the growing pool of military veterans, admired for their “can do” attitudes.
“One of the reasons for employing veterans is that the skills set we are looking for, the values and work ethic are perfectly aligned with the military,” said David Storch, chief executive officer at AAR.
“Veterans are very disciplined, very focused, in addition to the technical skills that the army trains for,” he told Reuters.
Last year the firm employed 314 veterans, who accounted for 18 percent of AAR’s total workforce of about 7,000.
Yet there are not enough qualified veterans to plug the technology and engineering skills gap confronting the U.S. labor market. AAR still has about 600 positions it cannot fill.
See, Reuters, now how hard was that?

One can only hope that it will be the part of a larger trend.
Way back in the 70’s I worked for New Jersey Bell, now Verizon.
Their policy, as was the policy of ALL the AT&T companies, was that
veterans were at the top of the list of all potential hirees.
Just off the top of my head 314 isn’t anywhere near 18% of 7000. 18% would have to be well over a thousand veterans….not that it detracts from the point of the article…
Anon above was me….
Except for three months where I was employed for my admin skills and promptly fired when the organization was brought up to code, I have been out of work for over a year and a half. I’ve been dropping at least three applications a week everywhere within an hour’s drive that is hiring. I’ve had a total of eight call-backs, two interviews, and no hires…
I wish the businesses within my local area were better about hiring vets. Hell, the only reason I was fired from the above job is because it would be $3,600 cheaper a year to hire a non-veteran.
Check my math: 7000 x 0.18 = 1260. 314/7000 is rougly 4.5%.
Hey, at least they’re hiring vets! My daughter told me she had heard there was a security guard co., here in Phoenix, that would only hire vets. I heard it 2nd hand but it sure sounds good.
I would assume 18% of their total workforce is veterans. The 314 recently hired added to the existing group.
GE just announced plans to hire 5,000 vets in the next 5 years. Hopefully it is a trend.
GE employs over 300,000. Assuming an average turnover of 10 percent (30,000 per year) that means they’re looking to vets to cover 3 percent of their hiring.
Color me unimpressed.
The sarectery took the rangers black beret away and gave it to the whole regular Army because he never earned oned and wanted to wear it. thats is what kind of man he is.
