Up to 64,000 Graves at Arlington Misidentified or Misplaced, Army Report Finds
ARLINGTON, Va. – Thousands of grave markers at Arlington National Cemetery may need to be replaced or added to accurately account for the dead, following a meticulous Army review of each of the nearly 260,000 headstones and niche covers on the grounds.
In a report to Congress on Thursday, the Army found potential discrepancies between headstones and cemetery paperwork on about 64,000 grave markers — about one in four.
Congress ordered the review last year following reports of misidentified and misplaced graves that led to the ouster of the cemetery’s top executives.

Perhaps I don’t know the intricate and stressful work that goes into the funereal directing and cemetery management profession…but damn….can it really be that hard that you jack up 64,000 plots?
And this isn’t even Memaw and Paw’s graves…this is veterans. You’d think there would be some level of oversight.
Such is a dishonor what can not and should not be tolerated. Please tell me heads will roll
When you get into the story you discover that some number (perhaps a significant number?) are spouses of, buried without notation on the headstone. And that number includes errors such as mispelled names and erroneous birthdates some on headstones and some from transcription issues between the data collection systems through the years.
So it is not nearly as bad as it sounds from the headline.
Not that the corrections don’t need to be made, of course. It’s a mess, but perhaps not as bad as it was made out to be.
Every time that I have read about how the “individuals” who managed Arlington have dishonored those that have fallen, I get so friggen pissed off over it. These people were employed by the government, and supposedly supervised by the Army, and they made a place of honor into a national embarrassment.
Bet you that none of the a$$&*)es that are involved will ever spend time in a Federal “pound you in the A$$” prison for what they did….
I’m shocked that nobody has yet been held accountable for these screw ups.
On the other side, I’m proud to know a guy who’s involved in documenting all the graves using modern technology. He’s doing important work.
