Jeff and StrikeFO emailed to remind us that today is the anniversary of the bombing in Beirut in 1983 by two suicide bombers in trucks. 220 Marines, 18 Navy personnel and three Army soldiers were killed and another 60 were injured in the first attack on American barracks.

The second attack was perpetrated against French troops who lost 58 paratroopers of the 1st Parachute Chasseur Regiment.

Two days later was the American-led liberation of Grenada from communists.

Thank you for the reminder. The 11th anniversary of the attack on the USS Cole was October 12. There isn’t one of us who does not mourn the losses. It is especially difficult when fighting men are taken as these were–without a chance to fight. God bless their families.

Its strange to think about this. I was born shortly after that. How strange to be born during a time of national mourning.

Seems like just yesterday this happened. A few days later we were put on alert and piled up waiting to deploy. This alert was different from the usual BS – we all could sense that. The honchos finally decided we weren’t needed and we were released. Went home and watched the news and found out we almost shipped out to Grenada. Damn, I’m old.

I was assigned to 1/8 nearly 17 years after they were attacked. By the time I PCSd, our CO and one of our 1st Sgts were veterans of Beirut. Thanks for posting this.

I just looked on a dating site, and saw quiet a lovely young fanciful, 21 year old, dressed up in a lovely white lace gown! LOL!

Life is too short.
