They’re actually looking at bringing back turbo prop planes for close air support akin to the A1 Skyraider used in Vietnam. One possibility is the EMB 314 currently used in South America.

Known as “The Ensign Eliminator” during WW2 as the Corsair was notoriously difficult to land on a carrier due to the fact that the AC’s long, huge nose obscured the pilot’s vision when on short final.

Japanese pilots were scared shitless of the Corsair, and called it “Whistling Death” due to the distinctive sound it made when at full power and during dives. They had nothing that could fly stay in the air with it towards the end of the war.

But a hell of an AC, regardless; I have the privilege of knowing a former Marine aviator who flew the Corsair during the Korean War…he’s a retired TWA Senior Captain.

One of the guys that did my follow up LASIK exams used to own, build, and restore WWII aircraft…saw a couple of photos of him in the Corsair, and I was mad jealous.

That aircraft, specifically that aircraft, would be the only one I would ever folly on if I had the money. She just looks like she was built for speed. Hell of a bird, and I wish the newer aircraft had her lines (obviously will never happen, but still).

I watched as he unfolded the wings and noticed the pilot was alone more or less. The reason I ask is that I worked F-4s for a few years and when they unfolded the wings, you had to walk underneath each side with a big screwdriver and lock them down. Does anyone know if the Corsair has a similar system? Oh, and beautiful aircraft. I saw a prototype in Arizona I think at Champlin Fighter Museum with only about 189 hours on it. It was cherry!!
