SUNY Cortland professor on guns
So I went to the “Mayors Against Illegal Guns” website to see what kind of nimnil joins a club that cares so much about a subject they seemingly haven’t had a meeting since December 2008. Hmmm. What happened towards the end of 2008 that would make them think that they don’t need a meeting for more than two years?
Anyway, they published an article from a State University of New York, Cortland, named Robert J. Spitzer, who has apparently written three books on gun control. What he had so much manufactured bullshit it would fit in just one? Anyway his article is entitled “SUNY Cortland professor advocates a sensible approach to guns, from New York to Arizona”. Yeah, sensible.
But one factor both events share in common is the availability of handguns.
Here’s the list of morons who are mayors and belong to this club. Apparently no mayor from West Virginia belongs, so I can’t help you.
Guns matter. The old axiom that “guns don’t kill, people kill” is only half right. As policy expert Philip Cook has noted, “guns don’t kill, they just make it much easier.”
So you see what sensible means, right?
Admittedly, Syracuse teens who obtain handguns don’t get permits, but would anyone feel safer if legal handgun purchase in New York were as easy as it is in Arizona?
Because, if you don’t have a permit for your handgun in New York, the gun can’t harm anyone, right? Yeah I feel safer knowing that New York has made it such an inconvenience to get a permit (it takes about 6 months) that the law abiding citizens don’t bother with the process and criminals are the only ones armed.

Hmm. I see Camden, NJ’s mayor is on the list of members. I’m sure the residents of her fine city are pleased that her membership has resulted in such stark reduction in their crime epidemic that they dropped all the way to number 2 on the list of “Most Dangerous Cities in America.” It’s especially great since half the police force just got laid off. But I’m sure those remaining will be able to provide all the protection that Camden’s law-abiding citizens deserve.
“Philip Cook has noted, ‘guns don’t kill, they just make it much easier.’” Yes, and? So do knives, cars, and Bristol Palin’s performance on “Dancing With The Stars.” (well, only if you’re a TV)
Robert J. Spitzer: any relation to the former governor of NY?
Thing is, no one seems to worry about automobile control these days. Heck, ANYONE with cash or sufficient credit can buy ANY type of automobile they want! There are NO background checks, and you don’t even have to go to a licensed dealer to buy one! People sell them to other people without a thought to the violence that might occur if that automobile is in the wrong hands!
Tens of Thousands of innocent Americans are killed EVERY YEAR on our highways! Hundreds of thousands more are inthis continuing epidemic of automobile violence? Where are the laws to prevent the sale of automobiles to those with no good reason to own one?
Seriously, man! Why does ANYONE need an automobile? There are buses and planes and trains and even bicycles that folks can use. Call a cab, and let a trained professional take you where you need to go!
Anyone else see how ridiculous this sounds? That’s the same craptacular line of reasoning put forward against gun ownership.
“Eff those muthas… if YOU don’t want a gun, then don’t buy one. Leave me and mine the hell alone.
Is the blockquote screwed up here? Or did he also call them morons?
You will remember that Cortland is my adopted hometown.
I’m still trying to figure out how someone can be a “gun expert” when they have never owned or handled a firearm. Add to that title “policy Expert” and you have the makings of someone who is completely clueless about anything to do with firearms or policy.
I guess in that vein, I could be considered a policy expert on motorcycles and bars?
I’m sure that citizens in Syracuse, or anywhere else for that matter, feel so much better when judges let someone off with probation, or 30 days, for a gun crime. If the laws are on the books, enforce them.
Michigan provides for a penalty of 5 years in prison and/or a $2500 fine, for carrying a firearm with unlawful intent, without a CCW permit, yet one could probably count the number of people sent to a state prison on two hands, unless there is another crime involved. Judges just do not see CCW(unlawfully) as a problem, yet. I had a juvenile who broke into a house, stole a pistol and got arrested carrying it. We got a waiver to try him as an adult, charged with the B&E, possessing a stolen firearm and CCW. His sentence? 1 year county jail time and 4 years probation. His reaction? Laughter.
I’m a policy expert on Kentucky Fried Chicken, Hardee’s Monster Burgers and Mt. Dew…..
My own personnel policy expertise is in coffee, Glenn Fiddich 18 yr, Bombay Saffire, rich leafy tobbacco, and most anything verbal that can be considered politically incorrect.
I found this interesting FBI chart that shows murders from guns/other weapons/ and body parts when debating the gun topic with a friend.
http://www2.fbi.gov/ucr/cius2009/data/table_20.html
Now the information is incomplete. Not all the states are represented, and nor is DC. It also doesn’t tell you if MURDER includes involuntary manslaughter? Suicide? And if “Other Weapons” section includes motor vehicle and boating “murders.”
Even with all of these unanswered questions, it just goes to show, some states have fewer murders involving guns and more murders using their bare hands/feet or knives. If someone wants to kill, a gun is NOT the only way to get the job done. I mean look at prisons, prisoners aren’t allowed weapons, and yet they kill each other.
