53-year-old principal volunteers for Iraq

| December 8, 2010

Just A Grunt sends along a hometown story of a high school principal who seems a bit overcome by the reaction of his community when he volunteered to go to Iraq. George Chip, an assistant principal at Alexander High School in Douglasville, GA, like most of us, felt a little left behind and volunteered to go back on duty 9 years after he left the Georgia National Guard (Atlanta Journal Constitution);

“I don’t feel like a hero, and I was a little embarrassed,” Chip says. “My father was a hero, fought in three wars in the Marine Corps. He was literally gone for two years at a lick, in very dire conditions. He was part of the greatest generation, fought in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. I am just a soldier doing my duty.”

Chip has been in the military for 28 years, joining when he was a teacher in Florida, training on helicopters.

“Then I saw this war on TV, and I had been out of the National Guard since 2001. I got to thinking, ‘How are we going to help these people?’”

Yeah, there are many more stories like this than there are of the people we usually feature here. We wish George Chip all the luck in the world and the best to his wife and daughters he’s leaving behind.

A few years ago I met a 47 year old Lieutenant JG. Having been in NJROTC in high school, seeing this OLD guy in a uniform sporting JG rank insignia, I was curious and asked. He was a doctor, who after 9-11 said he just had to join, and it just took him a little time to get his ducks in a row.
