Presidential Medal of Freedom

After Charlie Kirk’s assassination this week, President Trump announced that he will be posthumously awarding him the Presidential Medal of Freedom. I’ve briefly talked about this award in the past, but wanted to delve a bit deeper in this week’s piece.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is one of the highest honors of the American government. Most of us veterans are aware of the Medal of Honor, which is unquestioningly the highest award of the US Government. That medal can only be earned my members of the American military and only for actions in actual combat with the enemy (prior to the end of World War II, these criteria were different at times). It is awarded by the President of the United States in the named of Congress, thus it is sometimes referred to as the Congressional Medal of Honor, even those Congress has nothing to do with all but a few awards.

With the MoH being our highest award, there’s a multi-way tie for the next highest honors. Both the Executive Branch (to say the President and all those under him) and the Legislative Branch (to say the Congress and all those under them) also award honors. While it should be noted that the US military is under the Executive Branch, military awards have strict criteria. The country’s other top honors have little criteria other than at the whim of the awarding authority.

Congress has historically had a few awards. Thanks of Congress was essentially a resolution from both houses to prominent figures for service to the country. Many were to military officers (and also extended to those men under their command). Recipients included George Washington, all participants of the Battle of Tippecanoe, Oliver Hazard Perry, Andrew Jackson, Civil War generals Grant, Burnside, Sherman, Sheridan, and Civil War admirals Farragut and David Dixon Porter (twice).

This award has fallen by the wayside, with the last people to receive the Thanks of Congress being General of the Army Douglas MacArthur in 1962 and General of the Armies John Pershing in 1919.

The Thanks of Congress was often awarded with a special gold or silver medallion to commemorate the award. It is that medal that is still awarded today (with increasing frequency) as the highest honor bestowed by the Legislative Branch, the Congressional Gold Medal (and the lesser, and infrequently used Silver Medal and Bronze Medal).

The Congressional Medals are not strictly military awards, but they too have been received by a lot of men in uniform. It’s an award for spectacular achievement, and requires assent of both houses of Congress for award. Lieutenant General Winfield Scott received it twice (War of 1812 and Mexican-American War), and Major General (later President) Zachary Taylor received it thrice (a record, and all three for Mexican-American War service). It became a more civil award in the 20th Century (and continues as such) with awards given to science pioneers (such as Edison, Howard Hughes, Jonas Salk, Robert Goddard), explorers (Lindbergh, Byrd, the crew of Apollo 11), and other prominent people (as varied as Irving Berlin, Lady Bird Johnson, Bob Hope, Walt Disney, the entire 1980 US Summer Olympics team, Mother [now Saint] Theresa, and Nelson Mandela).

If the MoH is our government’s unquestioned highest award, then the Thanks of Congress would be the next highest, with the Congressional Gold Medal ranking equal to it. A Congressional Silver or Bronze Medal would rank below those. Still with me?

Medal of Freedom with Bronze Palm

After World War II, President Truman created the Medal of Freedom, to honor civilians, allies, and organizations that assisted with the greatest war effort in human history. That medal was awarded from 1947 until 1962. It could be awarded as the medal itself or with a gold, silver, or bronze palm. While not spelled out, the palms are seen as increasingly higher levels within the honor. It was created specifically to be a non-military award, but to have similar prestige to one. Being a civilian was the only requirement to receive it. This included allies, such as Nancy Wake. More than 20,000 were ultimately awarded. It could be awarded by one of three cabinet secretaries.

In 1963, President Kennedy created the Presidential Medal of Freedom to replace the earlier Medal of Freedom as the top level award of the Executive Branch. This was likely done for three reasons. First, it separated future awards from the WWII-era honor. Second, it allowed the new medal to become its own prestigious honor with its own pomp and circumstance. Thirdly, it became the supreme award of the Executive Branch, and is to be awarded solely by the President.

Unfortunately, while Kennedy selected the first group of recipients, he was killed before he could make the award. Thus Johnson was the first President to make awards, in Kennedy’s place.

The Medal of Freedom is awarded in two grades; either as just the Medal of Freedom, or “with Distinction.” It can be awarded posthumously (Kennedy himself was one of the first posthumous recipients when LBJ awarded it to him), and can be awarded more than once.

Politicians, civil servants, media figures, scientists, military leaders, and any person of note can receive the award at the discretion of the President. As of 2024, 672 awards have been made, with 55 having been made with distinction (8% of total awards).

Ellsworth Bunker (businessman and diplomat) and Colin Powell (military officer and diplomat) are the only two people to have received the Presidential Medal of Freedom twice. In Bunker’s case both were with distinction, while Powell received only his second award with distinction.

Other well-known recipients are eight Presidents (Kennedy, LBJ, Carter, Ford, Reagan, H.W. Bush, Clinton, and Biden), three popes (John XXIII, John Paul II, and Francis), the crews of Apollo 11 and 13, seven Supreme Court Justices, five Vice Presidents, and more people in the entertainment industry than I care to list.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom ranks behind the Medal of Honor, but equal to the Congressional Gold Medal. Kirk is receiving one of the highest awards of the American government, and the foremost award made by the Executive Branch. It’s too bad he died while earning it.

Well Deserved.

Was about to say the exact same thing!

A suspect has been apprehended. 22 yr old Tyler Robinson, a local Utah resident was turned in by his father. Press conference due in a few minutes.

If he is in fact the shooter, I can’t imagine how his parents must feel. Especially his Father a retired Deputy and his Mother, active in social benefits for the disabled.

Graybeard

I feel for them.

As an individual recently in the “Higher Education” system, while in my 5th decade, I can unequivocally state that the systemic takeover of public schools has fed the hate and disconnection of students from very early ages. The division from their parents and community accelerated during the lockdown, leaving many even more unhinged. No amount of pointing out that taking snippets of an individual’s words did not encompass their entire being was effective in the discussion. I would also point out that the barrier to entry for many careers requires attendance at these universities or schools. Without the ability to discern real life from what they are lectured on in class, the downfall via “privilaging of emotions” removes the cultural stops that were present in the past. Parents can make every effort to be “good” and model that for their children. It does not always work. Very sad and concerning.

Not only that but the kid was very bright. He scored a 34 on the ACT which is an excellent score, good enough to get into any school in the country. He would be in the 99% of test takers.

Shame to see him flush his life down the toilet over this stupidity. If he doesn’t get the death penalty or murdered in prison, 25 years from now he will know regret like no other and merely be a minor footnote to the end of the Democratic Party.

Respectfully, this issue transcends the distinction between “Republican and Democrat,” and it should. This is a failure weaving its way through the cultural zeitgeist in the West. The pitting via race, religion, lifestyle, to denigrate others as “less than human” is what will lead to the downfall of our current system. As much as we do not want “two parties” – without the intricate dance between the two, we end up with the “talking heads” always being in control. Especially when a moderate voice willing to engage in discourse is silenced. Do I think that Charlie Kirk had all “the right points” – no. However, killing him in such a way (that as reported by the “Right”), his young daughter was scared of the noise and ran toward him because she was his protector…that level of hate can lead to irreparable fractures. And most people just want to be left alone to live their lives.

It has already led to irreparable fractures, for Charlie for sure.

Toxic Deplorable Racist SAH Neande

More details are needed.
Did he REALLY pull the trigger?
Or is he a patsy set up to pin this debacle on?
For real? Or groomed?
It will be interesting to find out more details (if any are released);
School background (genius? average? failure?)
Friends and social media presence.
Work history.
Medical history (as much as is known publicly)
Is he an overmedicated trans wanna bee?
Gun history (expert? average? clumsy?)

You get the picture…..and the lack of picture on this Tyler Robinson.

(Forgot to add)
Groomed? If so, by whom?
FiBbIes? CIA? Mossad?

The skills required to make that shot can be acquired in one very good day on the range.

Commissar

Yep.

And it turns out it was only 133-135 yards. Not 200.

5JC

200 yards on a stationary target is a chip shot with a bolt action rifle or an AR, 150 yards is the gimme target. If you are missing at those ranges you will never qualify on the army table because 17 targets are 200M or greater.

Graybeard

While this is indeed a high honor, the title “Martyr” is now his for eternity, and he joins those currently in Heaven:

Revelation 6:9-11

When the Lamb broke the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God, and because of the testimony which they had maintained; and they cried out with a loud voice, saying, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, will You refrain from judging and avenging our blood on those who dwell on the earth?”

And there was given to each of them a white robe; and they were told that they should rest for a little while longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brethren who were to be killed even as they had been, would be completed also.

There are more to join Charlie Kirk there. In the interim, we can honor his memory by continuing his work.

5JC

Definitely isn’t over from the party of hatred. They have a long list of people they want to murder because they disagree with them.

David

his PARENTS are Republicans, he was not – his voter registration shows no party affiliation.. Addressing ammo to “fascists”? Discussions with his cousin about why they disliked Kirk? Doesn’t sound like a conservative to me.
You may also note that the contribution posted dates from when Robinson was 17 – how many 17-year olds make $200+ dollar Republican campaign contributions? More likely his parents made a contribution in his name – a not-uncommon occurrence, especially if they have contributed heavily already in the campaign.

5JC

My Italian is a little rusty but near as I can interpret;

“Oh bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao”

Means:

“My love for Trump and Commissar is the greatest, the man juices they shared with me under the full moon at pedo island in the moshing pit was the best experience of my life 15 years ago. Also that Trump Birthday Card is for real and Don Lemon got a bad deal. It is a good thing Commissar finally joined the MAGA movement and we can again consummate our love even though I am now too old for him to really appreciate anymore, I do have some good qualities and he loves playing doctor. Anywho, Die Charlie Kirk, die, you just aren’t fascist enough for me.”

5JC

Oh yeah? Prove it you lying fuqwit.

Unless Antifa are suddenly Trump supporters, in which case, WELCOME TO THE PARTY PAL!

His actions absolutely proved he “supported the party of hate”. And that party is called DEMOCRAT. Keep going, Lars. Deflect. Deny. Project. We’ve all seen through your bullshit. You support antifa. You support the divisiveness that progressive liberals feed off of. You produce nothing, provide nothing, stand for nothing, you just spew the party approved talking points and attempt to claim the moral high ground. Who cares what or who he donated to 5 years ago. His actions cannot be denied as anything but liberal progressive hate. Hate that you live for. Hate that you thrive on.

Take your show elsewhere, major. We see you for who you are.

5JC

Oh and totally BTW, The shooter would have been underage at the time of the donation and the donations would have not been accepted or reported. You don’t suppose there is another Tyler Robinson living in St. George, Utah? Oh wait THERE IS another Tyler Robinson living in St. George, Utah.

You will never believe this but he is a 34 year old Entrepreneur, not a 17 year old High school Student. Guess what he did? He gave money to Trump in 2020.

Commissar, you yet again you have covered yourself in the feces of being wrong. But you never tire of it do you? But the stench, do you not notice it under the stench of the failure of your life?

SFC D

Nope. You’ve applied logic, reason, and due diligence in your response, and it is therefore disallowed.

5JC

Let me head back to DU or BS and I’ll give it another try with whatever the leaders tell me to do.

SFC D

Be careful… If you go over there with an open mind, people will try to throw shit in.

5JC

The only way to save Democracy is to destroy it.

SFC D

At least Lars has company in his stupidity and willful ignorance. I’d hate for him to be lonely.

The funny part is the militant arm of the left loves guns too. Mostly when they are prohibited from carrying them, but they love them. It makes it easier to prey on the less militant arm of the party of hate.

Forest Bondurant

Commissar doesn’t get it.

If you told him to go out to the parking lot and practice picking up his teeth, and that you’d be out there in a few minutes, he’d do it.

It’s the same thing here.

He enjoys getting his teeth kicked in by this site.

rgr769

Maybe he has some of his trantifa buddies take a dump on his chest. It could be that there is a literal stench on him.

Grunt

I really think that after these new lows from Commissar, his posts should just be ignored.

There’s no point in replying and like a private at the club any attention is good attention to this asshole.

Shocked I am to read this and find Commissary is a bad liar with no credibility. Let’s face it when Reddit is your only source of information mistakes will be made.

Prior Service (RET)

Probably an unpopular opinion here but just now seeing a headline that VP Vance is leading a USAF honor guard with his remains, while I concur with Kirk’s opinions and have a high regard for him as a man, father, human, I’m opposed to the cumulative effects of: flying his remains on AF2, flag at half staff, military honor guard, and this medal and whatever else may come along. Maybe a singular honor would be okay-like this medal. Not veneration. I definitely would be opposed if Biden would have done this for some leftist idiot, and I also don’t like it for a guy I do agree with. Leave the military out of rendering honors to strongly political figures.

Also, I’m not sure of civilian equivalents to undue command influence but it seems like presidents and governors need to stop talking about “he needs the death penalty” because (while I want to cue up “Ride the Lightning” by Metallica, and see smoke coming from the killer’s ears), I don’t want some slick lawer (sic) getting him off because of some legal tainting of the court. If that’s not possible then, by all means, keep saying it.

5JC

I agree, but Trump will do Trump things. No such thing as UCI in the civilian world. However there is obstruction of justice and abuse of power. Didn’t effect the Reality Winner case though.

rgr769

There is no civilian equivalent. The president and your congressrats are free to say anything they wish which is not defamatory, and there will not be legal repercussions.
