Man charged with felony menacing in KP Pawn shooting
Suspect was experiencing mental health crisis; employee fired shots in self-defense, according to police

By Elizabeth Pond
A man who was shot twice last month at KP Pawn in Durango has been charged with felony menacing and reckless endangerment, according to the Durango Police Department.

Tucker Lee Haught, who arrived in Durango from out-of-state the day before the shooting, is suspected of entering the pawn shop about 9:45 a.m. July 29 while experiencing suicidal ideations, said Police Chief Brice Current.

“(Haught) entered the pawn shop with ammunition in his possession, requested to see a firearm, loaded it and attempted suicide,” Current said. One employee reportedly called 911 while another employee attempted to contain and de-escalate the situation, and also drew his firearm, Current said.

Current said surveillance footage from the incident showed Haught discharging one round, believed to be accidental, into the floor in the direction of a store employee. Haught then began to reload the weapon once more.

One of the employees, “recognizing the imminent threat to life,” fired his weapon, hitting Haught twice, which left him in critical condition, Current said.

Officers entered the store while shots were being fired, but no police weapons were discharged, he said. Emergency medical aid was provided to Haught on the scene, including a chest seal and tourniquet, until Durango Fire Protection District personnel arrived and took over care, Current said.

Haught was taken to a local hospital, and later flown to a Level 1 trauma center, where he survived his injuries, Current said. Haught was shot twice. His condition and the location of his wounds were not immediately known Tuesday.

The KP Pawn employee fired his weapon in self-defense, Current said.

“The Durango Police Department commends the courage, quick thinking and decisive action taken by store employees, responding officers and medical personnel, which prevented further harm to the public,” Current said. “While incidents of this nature are rare in Durango, they highlight the importance of vigilance, preparedness and strong community partnerships in maintaining public safety.”

Haught got naught for his suicide thought.
He tried to bring pain to others, I hope he now has pain for the rest of his life as a reminder of his wayward actions.

I’m just as glad that the clerk wasn’t forced to kill Haught in self defense, that’s more pain then the clerk deserves to live with.

Haught got haughty and thought he could just steal a gun for the rest of his life… Permanent solutions shouldn’t be attempted at the risk of others. Good thing no one else was injured, and if the problem was temporary–at is usually is–maybe Haught got enough of a taste of death to start making positive changes.

The large retailer I used to work at, that happens to sell firearms, puts trigger locks on every firearm before it leaves the gun vault. Whether we got a couple of guns from Lipsey’s and a single customer order, or 100 guns on the truck and 22 customer orders, it was my job to acquire it in our digital bound book and then install a trigger lock, place a Youth Handgun Safety Act pamphlet inside (for handguns) and seal the box. Being a gun guy, I tried to be sensible when it came to original boxes for used guns, putting them in a plain cardboard box to seal, but new guns got taped in their original boxes. 100 years from now, there will be people collecting Ruger and S&W pistols, or Browning and Tikka rifles, who lament the fact that the original boxes are all covered in Bass Pro tape. Fortunately, a lot of pistol manufacturers use plastic cases now (Glock, SIG, Beretta, higher-end S&Ws).

Bass Pro (and Cabela’s however long they keep that name–the Cabela’s 30 miles from my former store is now a Bass Pro, and I guess they’re renaming all of them eventually) is anything but a gun store–something I constantly reminded myself of to keep me from leaving sooner. I openly told that to management, customers, and anyone else that listened. Rant aside, the trigger locks cause some would-be customers to walk out when they’re told we can’t remove them and annoy collectors. They are effective to prevent situations like the one above, though.

Before Cabelas changed, I used them for buying shorts and other stuff. My best items were a Zeiss 10X56 Binocs and the
Zeiss mechanical operated 20X60 image stabilized Binocs, no batteries used unlike the Canon. Used them after 9/11 on the Boardwalk 2 blocks from my home and watched the CG Helos fly over the ships at anchorage waiting to go into NY harbor and NJ Car depots Helos were lowering devices to the ships for detecting any radiation. Got one ship but the tile that they carried were cleaned with a cleaning aget that gave false radiation emmisions, 12 miles out, I could read the names of the ships.

That’s one thing I miss: the cheap clothing. I found Redhead brand clothes to be comfortable and durable. As an employee I got them for 50-60% off, though. Not that I need more clothes at the moment, but when I do, I’ll just buy Wrangler Riggs now.

I’m pretty certain they still sell Zeiss. I believe one of the employees only sales last year was for a Zeiss rifle scope at something like 70% off. I think it was October where each week offered different discounts for national brands. I got my Beretta 80X Cheetah for under $500. I also picked up two Cabela’s generators right as the hurricane came through last year. Those were 60% off, so I paid around $380 for both, using a Club card promotion.

Any one have any news (good or bad) on Gun Bunny?
I haven’t been keeping close track (DA form 6) but I’m sure he’s close to that 30 days missing that will put him from AWOL to Deserter.

I was thinking of KOB and not hearing from him on the site for awhile.
