Veterans Beg Ron DeSantis to Stop Killing Them

| August 15, 2025

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R)

You guys are gonna love this. The Daily Beast would have you believe that DeSantis is walking around murdering veterans, which they take particular issue with because he is a vet himself!

The Daily Beast, or what passes for journalism these days;

Ron DeSantis is under fire for turning against his fellow service members and letting executioners slaughter five veterans this year alone.

The governor, who served in the U.S. Navy as a commissioned officer from 2004 to 2010, has called Florida “the most veteran-friendly state” in the nation. But during his reign, nine people have been executed—including five veterans.

Florida administers executions by lethal injection or electric chair at the execution chamber located at Florida State Prison.

Veterans statewide are now pleading with DeSantis to stop the executions of fellow former service members, all of whom devoted part of their life to protecting the country.

“We can never be a veteran friendly state when our leader is signing off on their deaths at the hands of the State,” more than 130 vets wrote in a letter to DeSantis. “We urge you now to lead from a place of bravery, to return to the honor code from your service, and to stop setting the executions of our fellow soldiers.”

I know we’ve got more than a few regulars that hail from America’s Wang The Sunshine State, so what say you? Is executing those convicted of heinous crimes something that should be stopped in light of their previous service?

I was aware of the veterans preference on job applications, the VA home loan, and the GI Bill as benefits we’re entitled to. I’ll admit that I was never once briefed that another benefit of military service is that we can be exempted from the death penalty for capital offenses. Now that I think about it, we were explicitly advised that the death penalty was on the table for violations of the UCMJ and the Law of Armed Conflict while still in uniform. I’m beginning to think this Daily Beast writer doesn’t have a clue what they’re talking about.

Anyway, there’s more at the source (linked above) if you want to read more baselessly anti-Republican vitriol dressed up as hard-hitting news.

They made no comment as to WHY those vets were put to death.

Just because a person is a military veteran, doesn’t mean that they can’t be an asshole.

Veteran does not equal sainthood.

Hack Stone

Hack Stone met more than one asshole who wore the Marine Corps Uniform. Two were convicted of molesting their daughters. One was Hack’s Company Commander in Okinawa. They made a television movie about him murdering his wife, an active duty Captain. And of course, Gunny Peckerhead, the SNCOIC of the Recruiting Office that Hack Stone was assigned to. The Marine Corps finally caught on to his shady shit and threw his ass to the curb at about the 15 year mark. Hack Stone was sporting a chubby for a weeks after finding his booking photo on line. It seems that in some parts of Minnesota, they actually arrest people who violate restraining orders.

When you get a chance, research CSM Joseph Lundberg. When you read the story remember this, I knew him and I am absolutely, 100% NOT Surprised.

All of the court martial documents are now public record.

I can’t help but think that if some NCO had spanked PFC Lundberg’s peepee real hard back in the day, this could’ve been avoided. He didn’t learn this behavior as an E9.

The worst soldier I ever served with murdered two people and badly wounded a third. He missed the death penalty due to a prosecutor error at his court martial. He did get life without parole, lucky him, he can sit there for decades in Leavenworth thinking about it while everyone he ever knew lives their lives and then dies. Maybe he will have time to know God and redeem himself in some way before final judgement.

Had he gotten a well deserved death penalty I don’t know a single person, except maybe his mother, who would have shed a single tear or given even the laziest of fucks.

So yeah soldiers kill people, they get the death penalty and every once in a long while they swing from a beam. Still waiting on you Nidal Hassan, some day your date with destiny and you can take your impotent junk to collect on your forty virgins. Which begs the question, why are they harassing DeSantis? Politics as usual I guess?

Until they are willing to go to bat for Nidal Hassan my JB and sour says they are nothing but hypocritical punk ass bitches that need to sack up and go for it.

Blaster

Yep! Fuckers are fuckers! Doesn’t matter if they did good somewhere, sometime!

Roh-Dog

Nidal Hassan

I’ll do everything in my power to find that POS’s grave to piss a quart of Miller Lite frothy mess and a leave a log of nothing but BLTs for 2 days straight.

See you in line, fuqqers!

5JC

That line will be the longest of lines, people will come from thousands of miles around. If Trump wants to do something that will please 98% of vets out there, bump that guy to the top of the list and make it happen.

Roh-Dog

Even better: do it at Doughboy Stadium at FORT BENNING and select random Army Vets to attend.

I’d break out the ol’ class As if selected for the festivities.

A Proud Infidel®™

Even better, make hanging his means of death and have a lottery to see who gets to pull the lever on him!

Hate_me

I’m all for that, but I’d prefer to see a potter’s field kind of modern Plot E for every executed service member – in some well-maintained but hidden corner of some military cemetery, not open to the public, buried with their backs to the honorable dead and with no headstone to mark their passing but an index card-sized number connected to some dusty database forever locked away in the caretaker’s desk.

As veterans, we can never be some special class of citizen. At the same time, our service comes with many benefits and our failure in that service should come with its own considerations.

Blaster

That’s very well said!

A Proud Infidel®™

Many prisons have graveyards for their dead whose family doesn’t want to claim the body and in them they’re buried with a small level concrete marker that only has their prisoner number, IMO that ought to happen to Hasan, let him die lonely with his name forgotten.

Blaster

I’d rather him be buried next to Osama!

USAFRetired

Didn’t Federal law get changed a while back that for certain crimes post military service you can lose your veteran’s death benefits? I also seem to remember that you can be disinterred from Veteran’s cemeteries for post service acts. I believe at least one such individual was chronicled here in TAH.

I hold Veterans to a higher standard of conduct. Because we should know better

Mike B

Fernando Cota is a current one they are voting on to be disinterred. But there are several stories from over the years about others.

I’m a Floridian by choice for 29 years, and my son is a Native and currently serves in the USN. I love my Free State of Florida! Below are the executed…

Bobby Joe Long – suspected of murder of 10 women convicted of 8
Duane Own – convicted of 2 murders and 3 other life sentences
Edward James – 2 murder convictions and other felonies was booted out of the Army
Jeffrey Hutchinson – 4 murder convictions/whole family claimed ‘Gulf War Syndrome’ as defense
Edward Zakrzewski – 3 murder convictions/his wife & kids was USAF

The first 2 guys military service was so inconsequential its not even mentioned when I Googled their stories. All these fucks murdered in cold blood. Some random women with SA mixed in and the last prick killed his whole family. I don’t know a single person, veteran or not, that thinks these should guys have been spared. No, the Daily Beast is a political propaganda fish wrap that’s already trying to torpedo a DeSantis White House run in 2028. As a Floridian & Veteran, I say the execution of these guys was warranted and their service does NOT shield them from answering for their crimes.

Mike B

Yeap, if you don’t want the needle or don’t want to ride sparky don’t commit death penalty crimes in Florida. Easy as that.

James – booted due to killing, and they object to his execution FOR THE KILLINGS because he’s a vet? That’s chutzpah… Like in the story “Hana’s Suitcase” when the Nazi’s classified Hana as an orphan because they had already exterminated her parents in a camp.

fm2176

I served this country for 21 years. Not as long as some, longer than many, but military service is something that most Americans can’t claim. Those 21 years were a chapter in my life that’s over now. I get benefits, both official and unofficial (Big Box discounts, etc.), and made a lot of friends. But PVT-SFC fm2176 doesn’t define my life. It’s part of my bio and resume, to be sure, and I gladly accept any discount or what have you readily offered, but I don’t advertise outside of the 100% DAV plates, and I’m definitely not “that guy” that’s going to sit there and argue with a Lowe’s employee if my military discount isn’t applied to a purchase.

“Hero to Zero”, as the saying goes. What you did during your service doesn’t excuse your actions outside of the service, and it sure doesn’t exempt you from being held accountable as much as the next guy. If anything, veterans should be held to a higher standard, as cops are in many criminal cases.

I’m pretty certain, though, that disability payments stop if you’re incarcerated for over six months. That’s definitely unfair, if I commit a heinous crime tomorrow and receive the death penalty, why shouldn’t I get free room and board for the next 30 years while appeals play out and still receive $4k a month?

I’m a fan of First Blood, both the movie and the book. The movie downplayed the book’s plot a lot, setting itself up for a sequel where Rambo himself is serving prison time. Besides the accidental death of the deputy in the helicopter, there are no deaths in the first movie. The book, however, results in both Rambo’s and Teasle’s deaths, and had Rambo survived, he’d have likely faced the death penalty in real life, MOH or not. Given the number of people he killed in the book, I doubt many of us would have advocated for him.

Dennis - not chevy

Well put. I have been laboring over how do I put this without sounding self-loathing. I am sick and tired of veterans who think they are owed more than their due and proper. I’ve had co-workers argue with the boss because their pay didn’t match what they made on active duty. ‘and, the tip line on credit card receipts where the customer wrote, “I served this country in uniform, that’s your tip, you should thank me…”

I’d like to tell these left leaners to remember when they believed in Santa Claus … they should compare that to when the recruiter told them they’d make $1M a year when the got out after a 4 year enlistment.

fm2176

“My Recruiter lied to me…” is almost as prevalent as “I’ll make x amount more than [insert senior NCO/officer here] within a week of getting out (usually either a first-termer or occasionally a mid-termer or would-be careerist getting out under less-than ideal circumstances). When it comes to service workers, I’m probably generous to a fault. I know they don’t make much, certainly not what I made on Active Duty, or even what I receive now, so I tend to over tip. Hence, an Olive Garden meal for my three teenagers and me costing $145, or over $100 for three haircuts at Fantastic Sam’s (plus a $20 donation to a guy who walked in soliciting for his daughter who’d wrecked her car and needed to get home–it’s South Louisiana, and when someone looks and talks a certain way, you can be pretty certain they’re not just another meth head looking for a handout).

I spent two days this past week on C-bodies (what most people think of when it comes to armored trucks), and the Transit vans have definitely been spoiling me. Every joint aches and I’ve had a stabbing pain in my upper back for over a week, but I took this job doing the same work some kids half my age do, for the same amount of money. My company doesn’t owe me a penny more than I earn, if I want special privileges or higher pay due to my veteran status, experience, or education, I’m able to simply apply elsewhere. I like the physicality of the job, though, and don’t mind putting my usual hyperawareness to work.

When I enlisted, I wasn’t promised anything besides an E-1 paygrade and Fort Campbell. Twenty-four years later, if I commit a crime and have to face the consequences, my military career should play no role other than perhaps the prosecution stating, “he knew better, your Honor, having claimed to espouse the Army Values as a decades-long NCO and Drill Sergeant.”

Mike B

The old adage “One oh shit, destroys a hundred attaboys” applies here. What good you might have done in life, is irrelevant, as you’ll always be remembered for the heinous crime you were put to death for.

Charles

When reached for comment, DeSantis’ Communications Director Alex Lanfranconi told the Daily Beast after publication: “A simple trick to avoid execution in Florida is to not murder people.”

Yeah, that’s my thought, too.

By the way, check out the author of the The Beast article … the “breaking news intern” and a “freelance contributor for a number of outlets.” That’s some solid journalism creds right there.

First they bitch about “Florida Kills To Many Veterans”.

Now they’re bitching that Florida’s death sentences are racist.

Florida doesn’t care about any of that, if you need killing, the state will put you down.

Look at how liberals screech to save the lives of convicted murderers while espousing the killing of unborn children, further proof that liberalism is a mental disorder.

There are veterans who served honorable and fulfilled their military obligation, and there are veterans who were dealing drugs, going absent without leave, and stealing from and assaulting their brothers in arms.

If you served in uniform, you know we have standard that we hold ourselves to, and are fully aware that if we fucked up, we man up and suffer the consequences. And we carry that with us into the civilian sector.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

Too many dipshits that served think their service is a free pass to be considered an extenuating circumstance whenever they do something stupid, or even when they do something criminal and/or heinous….your service was a part of your life, it’s not an excuse to be an asshole later in life. Your service doesn’t cause you to never be a decent human again, and if it does I suspect you were never a decent human to begin with.

We all carry weight from something in our lives, from loss, from service, from being victimized, from whatever. If we choose to let that weight define our lives and drive our behavior that’s our fault. If we can’t handle the weight we have the option to get help, not getting help is also a choice. You are who you are because of the choices you’ve made for good or for evil.

If you commit a heinous act I don’t care if you’re a veteran, a clergyman, or a goddamn saint you deserve nothing more than what you delivered in that heinous act.

If that was death that’s also what you should receive.

I said what I said.

SFC D

It sounds very much like several veterans were asking Governor DeSantis to kill them. An execution ain’t slaughter.

rgr769

People who commit heinous murders that warrant the death penalty should not have their death sentences commuted just because the are veterans. Moreover, I suspect that those that actually served were likely shitbags. I wonder how many of these condemned veterans failed to even meet the Gunga Dan Line. Because you once wore the uniform doesn’t give you a license to murder with impunity. If I had my way, I would cleanse all the death rows with public hangings.

David

Pretty sure I could get 130 vets in almost any state to sign a letter of protest against their governor for, say, gravity. That is less than a tenth of a percent of Florida’s veteran population (as of 2023.)

A Proud Infidel®™

130 Vets? I’d have to say that’s probably in the neighborhood of less than 0.005% of the Veterans living in Florida!

Mike B

If you don’t want to face the death penalty for you crimes. Don’t commit them in a state with an active death penalty.

Better yet, just skip doing the crime and shoot yourself and save us the money of convicting you and housing you until your execution date.

Sorry I have no sympathy for those on death row (Unless it’s a rare case that they are truly innocent of the crime). I don’t care what color they are, their sex, their religion, or if they were military or not. If you did the crime you’ll meet the executioner in Florida so make your peace.

Mike

Roh-Dog

Don’t wanna be lawfully killed by the state? Don’t commit murder or other heinous crimes!

Easy as.

BennSue

“Vets” with no names, no times of service, no expertise in legal proceedings. Finally, 130 people? That’s 0.000556268721% of Florida’s population. (0.00928571429% if you only count Florida’s military population. Pass.

Old tanker

Almost sounds like they want to have it that a Vet can do no wrong, or be held fully accountable for acts committed after service.

We all have seen cases where even a currently serving SM commits heinous crimes. Serving isn’t a get out of execution card. Similar to what we all heard before. One aw shit wipes out all the other atta boys from before.

This is another case of making “news” out of nothing in order to throw shade on someone.

A Proud Infidel®™

Veteran or not, if you commit murder, you qualify for the death penalty like everyone else, sounds like a small gaggle of attention-seekers whoring around IMO.

NHSparky

DD-214 doesn’t entitle you to go around killing people, nor is it a, “No Riding Sparky” pass.

Imma guess those 5 didn’t have the most stellar of records, but that’s just me.

And the vets that signed the “letter”? Sit on it and fucking rotate, ya stank-ass hippies. I’m guessing I know who the group is or who they’d line up behind, methinks.
