Iraqi parent accused of attempted honor killing, found not guilty of attempted murder
An Iraqi couple was not happy with their daughter’s decision not to return to Iraq to participate in an arranged marriage. The daughter tried to remove herself from that reality. However, her parents caught up to her. The father reportedly did something that made people believe that he wanted to engage in honor killing. The father was acquitted of the murder attempt charge but was convicted of assault and unlawful imprisonment. The mother was acquitted of attempted murder, assault, and unlawful imprisonment. However, she was found guilty of violating a court order.

Ihsan and Zahraa Ali stood trial for the shocking broad-daylight attack last fall outside Timberline High School in Lacey, Washington State where prosecutors said the pair tried to kill their 17-year-old daughter after she refused an arranged marriage.
After three days of deliberations, jurors convicted Ihsan Ali of assault and unlawful imprisonment.
His wife Zahraa was found guilty of violating a court order but acquitted of the more serious charges, including attempted murder, assault, and unlawful imprisonment.
Ihsan, who remains in custody, faces up to 14 months in prison for assault and an additional 12 months for unlawful imprisonment while Zahraa was released on Thursday on personal recognizance and is under strict orders to remain in Thurston County and avoid any contact with her daughter.
The case drew national attention last October after terrifying video footage emerged of Ihsan Ali putting his 17-year-old daughter, Fatima Ali, in a chokehold outside her high school, allegedly in retaliation for refusing an arranged marriage and for dating an American boy – actions he reportedly viewed as bringing shame upon the family.
The viral footage first published by the Daily Mail showed Fatima collapsing on the pavement, only for her father to continue strangling her unconscious body for nearly 20 seconds, according to prosecutors.
‘She’s unconscious, and he continues to strangle her around the neck for another 15-18 seconds and would have continued to do so even longer but for the intervention of those adults,’ prosecutor Heather Stone told jurors at the trial.

I think you mean her “middle name” or father’s name.
Since she already broke with tradition by dating outside the faith (a capital offense under Islam) she could break further and take her husband’s (or wife’s) name if she ever gets married. Or just use her grandfather’s name.
Funny how their immigration status wasn’t mentioned. No doubt they are refugees from Muslim extremists in the Iraq we “liberated”.
Mercy to the criminal is cruelty to the victim, especially to naturalized citizens who came here expecting things to be better than the inferior cultures they left.

Of all the Iraqis I helped to emigrate to the US and of all their children as well, many of whom are now adults, none are marrying Iraqi’s in Iraq. Pretty much all of them are marrying Americans. Most are not Muslims or practicing Muslims either. At this point we are talking about dozens of adults.
Very few have gone back to Iraq even to visit. It just isn’t a thing anymore for them. I think those who experience success in the US tend to go a bit deeper in American culture, such as it is.
Glad they were able to leave and find something in our culture that they were looking for. As far as I’m concerned, they are no longer Iraqis. As Teddy Roosevelt put it:
“In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. It is funny you mention that. When we were in country they always talked to each other in Arabic and now they talk to each other almost entirely in English. I think in part this is because of the spouses and that they have regular jobs dealing with the public.
A couple of them served in the US military but not as interpreters. Although one that joined as infantry was pulled by his Brigade Commander to be his personal interpreter when he found out he was a native speaker. I can’t blame the BC for that, I would have done the same thing.

It’s Washington state. Therefore, it would have been racist to find a Muslim guilty of being a Muslim and engaging in Muslim traditions. You see, we just don’t understand it/them.

The judge prohibited the prosecutor from even mentioning “honor killing” in the court room. Since that was the motive, the trial was poisoned from the start.

Both mom and dad should have been convicted of the serious felonies, but stupid jurors, and likely voters in the Peoples’ Democratic Republic of Washington, decided otherwise. ICE should be waiting for them when they are released from the county jail. Then back to Iraq they go, but without the daughter.

DV Strangulation (DV-A2) and unlawful imprisonment are pretty serious felonies. You will never get a clearance with that. Employers will definitely step away from that kind of risk Not sure why he is only looking at 24 months. In my state he would likely get at least three years minimum, maximum of 10 is rare.
