Mikie Sherrill Accused of Stolen Valor

| May 10, 2025 | 42 Comments

Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill

This may be splitting hairs, but it’s worth mentioning here.

In a nutshell, Mikie Sherrill’s campaign emails misrepresented her Navy rank, though the Congresswoman used the correct title.

Should she have exercised stronger oversight over what language her campaign was using?

Rep. Mikie Sherrill’s campaign incorrectly identified her as a “Lieutenant Commander” in over 20 fundraising emails, despite her actual retirement rank of Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. Military records confirm she left active duty as a Lieutenant (O-3), not Lieutenant Commander (O-4).

While nominated for promotion before leaving service in 2003, Sherrill was never confirmed at the higher rank. The congresswoman has consistently used her correct title in personal statements, writing in a 2017 op-ed: “I left the Navy as a Lieutenant after spending almost 10 years as a helicopter pilot.”

President Biden inadvertently reinforced this error during 2021 remarks in New Jersey by referring to her as “Lieutenant Commander.”

Though Sherrill reportedly acknowledged the error and attributed it to a vendor, the responsibility for campaign communications ultimately rests with her. While not criminal, this misrepresentation represents a significant breach of military protocol.

Despite the campaign’s error, Sherrill has not personally claimed the higher rank, making allegations of “stolen valor” questionable.

Mikie Sherrill accused of Stolen Valor in campaign ads, promoting her as Lt. Commander
Campaign emails inaccurately inflated Rep. Sherrill’s Navy rank, despite her personal use of the correct title.

ShoreNewsNetwork

MORRISTOWN, NJ — A Rep. Mikie Sherrill’s campaign inaccurately identified her as a “lieutenant commander” in more than 20 fundraising emails during her time in Congress, despite official military records showing she retired from the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant.

This was first reported by the Washington Free Beacon.

The designation was included in a disclaimer routinely appended to the bottom of Sherrill’s campaign emails.

“Mikie Sherrill was a Lieutenant Commander [O-4] in the U.S. Navy,” the disclaimer read, followed by a standard legal note about military endorsements.

However, her Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty lists her final rank as lieutenant (O-3).

In a bit of irony, Sherrill called for the resignation of another politician over allegations of stolen valor.

“… the responsibility for campaign communications ultimately rests with her.” A lesson pounded into the heads of every business communication class I ever took. If your name is on it, it must be accurate.

“I am so-and-so, and I approved this ad.”

“the responsibility for campaign communications ultimately rests with her.” This standard is not applicable to any communications coming from All Points Logistics.

I don’t know. Sometimes these things get overlooked. Like I heard that a former president wrote in his autobiography that he was born in Kenya and that later said he was born in Hawaii. Then he said he never even read his own autobiography, much less wrote it, although there are a lot of signed copies out there.

I wish I could say that I got out as a Sgt, but I was a Corporal. If I ever said or typed that I was a Sgt, I would be lying and it’s that simple and anyone who knows the truth would be well within their rights to call me out. I can see someone else typing up her bio and making a mistake, but she should have picked up on it, however, when Demonrats do it, its ok. In regard to Barry 0, well, I would expect nothing more than lies coming out of that filthy sewer, so no shock there.

Jimbojszz

She is a democrap, so I expect her to lie. Her sheeple will believe she tried to correct the error as she occasionally corrected it before an audience. She is using stolen valor by proxy as she controls her campaign. She could set the record straight at anytime and yet she lets it slide. I say stolen valor!

26Limabeans

“I say stolen valor!”

And by proxy at that. Always keep a fall guy in your pocket.

Now if Sherrill was spelled “Cherrlyn”, that name is a boss song by the Native Boys 1956 on the combo record label. Nice background falsetto.

What do you think of that background falsetto action..

“She is using stolen valor”

How much more valorous than an O-3 is an O-4? I didn’t realize that valor increased with rank. So an O-4 finance officer is more “valorous” than an E-4 infantryman?

Valor;
“great courage in the face of danger, especially in battle.”

Tallywhagger

Very shady, in my estimation. If she wanted to inflate her place in things she should have mentioned her flight hours the types of aircraft she operated and the circumstances of those operations.

I wonder is she likes girls as much as I do.

The only prevailing question here is…

Would IDC SARC hit it?

rgr769

Based upon prior comments by him and examples of who the SARC would hit, the answer is a definite “yes.”

rgr1480

And where in HELL is our IDC SARC?

Tallywhagger

If penicillin could cure it, he’d it.

Her years of service in the US Navy are listed as 1994–2003.

I appreciate her service to this country, but I find it odd that with nine years of service, being a helicopter pilot at that, she only achieved the rank of LT (O-3). It may not be a disciplinary issue, but it certainly seems like she was passed over, and O-4 would have been the typical pipeline for this length of service.

Perhaps the Navy folks can chime in and offer some perspective on that?

George V

From what I remember it sounds right, but my experience is from about 45 years ago. What I remember of typical time served in rank is:

  • Ensign (O1) 2 years
  • Lt. j.g. (O2) 2 years
  • Lt. (O3) 5 to 6 years

So being “frocked” (promoted the the rank before it’s really permanent) to LCDR (O4) at nine years seems about right – for the US Navy in the late 1970s, which now seems about as far back in time as muzzle loading cannon and cocked hats.

Luddite4change

If she was “frocked” or given a temporary promotion prior to departing the Navy, she is entitled to use the title as we have been in a war/National Emergency since 2001.

I find it odd that she “retired” with 10 years of service, vice resigning. Words matter.

5JC

It’s a media thing. When Republicans stop serving they are “discharged” when Democrats leave the service they “retire”.

Luddite4change

I’m honestly curious how she was able to complete a degree from the London School of Economics while on active duty.

They didn’t have many part time programs in 2002 (trust me I looked for myself). If it was full time, where was her payback.

JustALurkinAround

I’m indifferent because it didn’t occur during Vietnam times.

STSC(SW/SS)

A Republican would have been gigged for less than this issue.

A Proud Infidel®™

Much less, I remember D-rats calling for GW Bush’s resignation over accusations of his daughters drinking while underage!

Politicians of both parties lie and obfuscate daily and yet some are outraged at the principal when some underling screws up by making a mistake that the principal has openly and constantly contradicted. Pardon me if I don’t give a fuck about trivia.

Just how nit-picky do we get for

“That is Stolen Valor!”

versus

“Dont be an Ass, ‘sir’.”

Or, in this case “Dont be an Ass, Jenny.”

Used to get my gas at the Jenney station.

Tnx for the memory…

All-Points Logistics is always hiring….

SFAlphaGeek

I’m going to give her a pass on this. It’s not like she claimed to be a Sergeant Major when she really retired as a Master Sergeant, and then doubled down when she got caught.

rgr769

Ditto.

BiggBallzz

Useless fucking cunt, just when her country needed her she quit serving, the military is full of these type of self serving cocksuckers.

5JC

Somebody is clearly grumpy because they have never received a hummer they didn’t pay for no matter how large they think their ballzz are.

The big logic hole here is that the military can’t be full of quitters because they all would have quit and no one would be there. That aside, she served ten years through 2003 which is years more than 99% of the population served and to begrudge someone for serving and then moving on in life reeks of resentment due to their own poor life choices.

She’s a politician, so by extension a liar and someone who blames others for their mistakes and shortcomings.

””Lieutenant” vs “Lieutenant Commander” and “Master Sergeant” vs “Command Sergeant Major” isn’t a simple mistake, yet they always find a way to walk the claim back with a lame fuggin excuse.

SFC D

If I played by their rules, I would be here as “1SG D”. Just because I held the position for almost a year doesn’t mean I get to claim the rank.

I was station on Okinawa in 72. I was a Spec.5. I had been in the Army 21 months, went up for Spec. 6. I was first on the list. We receive one stripe that month. Was asked by the Col. to give my stripe to the second man on the list. The Col. said that I was a Spec. 6 that day. He said that I was getting a early out of 90 days and would not get paid for Spec. I agreed to give up my Strip. My DD 214 list Spec. 5. Can I say that I was once a Spec. 6.
