Pay illegals $1000 to self deport?

| May 10, 2025 | 31 Comments

Customs and Bo9rder Patrol says if immigrants register their intent to leave the US on the CBP website and actually go, can receive assistance and a $1000 bonus.

Billing it as a “historic opportunity” and a “dignified way to leave the U.S.,” the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement that those who submit an “Intent to Depart” through the CBP Home app will receive travel and financial assistance to return to their home countries, in addition to $1,000 paid after their return has been confirmed.

The average cost for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to arrest, detain and remove an immigrant illegally in the United States is $17,121, according to DHS. The agency claims that even with the cost of the stipend, a “self-deportation” would decrease the cost of a deportation by about 70 percent.

No arguments over due process, voluntarily leaving rather than a public fuss – what is wrong with this idea?

According to the DHS, there has already been one instance of a migrant who “utilized the program” and received a ticket for a flight from Chicago to Honduras. The agency also said additional tickets have been booked for this week and the following week but did not provide details. Representatives for the agency did not immediately respond to emailed questions Monday.

The agency also said in its statement that migrants who voluntarily self-deport through the CBP Home app will be “deprioritized for detention and removal ahead of their departure as long as they demonstrate they are making meaningful strides in completing that departure.” The agency also said migrants who participate may be able to reenter the United States legally in the future, but did not specify how.

Hey, if they learned a lesson and want to try legally – again, what is wrong with it? You know a Democrat is going to object.

“This is America — and a nation as aspirational as ours, strengthened by the diversity of all seeking hope and opportunity, should never be reduced to pay-to-deport,” Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-New York), who formerly was an undocumented immigrant, wrote on X. “We don’t bribe people to leave. We build a country where everyone belongs.”

“Reduced to pay to deport” –  what does he want, to ship ’em off in handcuffs? Or just fly them first class, because – well, why?*

Sounds like a second chance to come in the right way, and saves a lot of deportation costs. Sure, it’s not going to work on the gang-bangers and baddies – but if enough folks decide to go, law enforcement can concentrate on the REAL undesirables.

* According to Wikipedia Espaillat claims that Dominican president Ulises Espaillat was his great-grandfather. Right last name, different family. Not a BAD family, just not the one he claims.  Wiki  At least he is keeping his claims Dominican, not a blonde trying to pass himself off as, say, Native American.

I am pretty sure I know where Trump got this idea. I know several landlords that rent out cheap apartments. If they get a tenant that isn’t paying and overstays their lease they will offer them a few hundred bucks for a clean, immediate move out. It saves them money on the eviction and the lost rent from having a free loader taking up space.

But then the Dems be like:
https://babylonbee.com/news/democrat-leaders-offer-illegal-immigrants-1001-to-stay-in-us

Like all government that aren’t well though out there is a huge problem they didn’t think about. Someone could self deport, get the money and then use it to return back to the US later (illegally), getting a free round trip home.

Should be “like all government programs that aren’t well thought out…”

I think once an illegal takes the deal and leaves. Why screw it up by returning illegally, when you can now be eligible to come back legally. If deported by force then they can never come back or you have to wait years to be eligible to return. This is an opportunity for illegals to do the right thing for themselves and not live in fear of deportation.

I have a better idea, that a few of us TAH’ers should talk with a Mexican accent, get the 1000.00 G notes and donate the moola shmoola into the TAH/stollen valor coffers. Coming back across the border is a cinch by talking with a Brooklyn NY or Boston Mass accent. What could possibly go wrong. And no, I won’t mention the song “I Was Wrong” by the Charmers 1954 on the Timely record label. Sorry, I was wrong in mentioning the
Vocal Group harmony Ballad….

Well lying on a federal form doesn’t seem to get anyone on trouble anymore, just tell them your penis envy made you do it.

Or hitting federal agents and screamkng “motherf*cker” at them, for Democrats:

Aiding and abetting illegal immigrants should carry the penalty of jail time or worse. That is treason.

Jimbojszz

They check your fingerprints for records. The CBP finds out you’re a citizen. So no money for you💵.

Dems are also fond of saying no one is above the law. That includes illegal aliens who broke the laws of the land by entering illegally and continuing to trespass. Of course dems also like to select who and what laws they enforce.

A cruise ship to the Antarctic. No passports required. No returns.

How about a thousand Dollar Bounty on each illegal and see how fast they Deport!
Keep the money home!

This is one of Trump’s ideas that I break with him on. If every single illegal alien says yes to this offer, it’ll cost 11 billion dollars.

Sorry, Mr. President, I say no. 👎

What is the net cost if the illegals stay and avail themselves of various government programs, working off the books, depress wages, etc? More than $1000 each, easily.

What is the cost to arrest, hold, and deport them all? -Way- more than $10,000 each, with the currently-in-place highly adversarial system.

$1000 per departure is cheap, and almost immune to litigation. Thus prompt. Also takes away most arguments of “What choice do they have to be legal again?” Thus helping reduce effort on the adversarial cases.

I think it rather clever. It’s a cheap “low hanging fruit” “carrot” approach.

Amateur Historian

Hmmm, I didn’t consider that. My position was that US taxpayers have suffered enough with 4 years of government corruption, incompetence, and ineptitude. My mode currently is to balk at anything that incurs cost to anyone trying to live and survive in these United States. But what you said makes sense and, thusly, my mind is changed. Thank you.

11B-Mailclerk

I am very much -not- happy we are in this mess. Any method that evicts illegals with minimal fuss should be considered.

Reactivating Alcatraz, or creating Camp ThisPlaceSux in the Mojave Desert, might also drive numbers in a good direction. And when not full of illegals, might be used for corrupt pols.

Can’t be “cruel and unusual” if we routinely house soldiers in similar circumstances. They could babysit the threatened tortoises from Fort Irwin.

Amateur Historian

Prohibition on “cruel and unusual punishments” only applies to US citizens inside the jurisdiction of the United States. I do not remember the Yazidis or Kurds being protected by that amendment.

As far as I care, illegal aliens only have the right to their lives. Not to liberty or the pursuit of happiness.

11B-Mailclerk

Lol.

Read Amendment 13.

Ponder leftist splodey-heads when FedGov starts auctioning illegals for 10 years of penal servitude.

Then again, the Donks seem to like slavery.

Amateur Historian

Importing a bunch of illegals to work jobs “Americans don’t want to work” (who the hell made the dems the authority on jobs Americans don’t want to work?!) for pennies on the dollar they would’ve paid an American? You don’t say!

26Limabeans

I haven’t fallen for the “real ID” scam yet so maybe I can
come up with a way to turn it into cash by flip flopping over
the border for a thousand bucks each time.
Somebody gotta have that going by now.

rgr769

In reality likely less than a million illegals will take advantage of this and self deport.

Amateur Historian

That’d still be less illegals we’d have to deal with.

5JC

I’ll eat my hat if a million take them up on it and stay gone.

rgr769

Many years ago, as a young law student employed by a law firm, I asked the senior attorney if I should start the paperwork to evict the tenants of a house on which we had recently completed a foreclosure. His response was to offer them $750 to move out in two weeks. I did so and it worked. I have successfully used this technique several times instead of filing unlawful detainer (eviction) lawsuits.

11B-Mailclerk

“How much to go annoy someone else?”

Even better if you can arrange the selection of some truly deserving “someone else”. (Grin)

GTFO on your own and you’ll be elligible to come back legally, otherwise…

Sweden reportedly already doing it at $34K per person. I guess the citizens starting to get really tired of the migrant gang violence (grenades?), and the country being labeled as the most dangerous in western Europe.

Forest Bondurant

Yeah….no.

They received plenty of handouts and assistance while they were here.

Paying them to leave just sends a signal that there’s more money waiting for them for their next illegal entry and no real consequences for breaking the law in the first place.

Enough taxpayer money has been squandered on this bullshit.

Jimbojszz

There has to be an incentive for those that immigrate illegally. To make it worse than the disparity they face in their homeland.
We return them to their homeland. No incentive not to return. We could give them a chance to leave once, an illegal returns and we lock them up for one year. Then we repeat and on the 3rd attempt we need to make it painful, make them live with Nancy Pelosi and Chukie Schumer.

rgr769

Most of our fellow citizens don’t know the real reason the D-rat pols and elite want many millions of illegals aliens here. They want them counted in the national census. Their numbers will give the Drats over ten more seats in the House and likely cause the Republicans to lose about seven seats. The goal is defacto one party rule—the crypto-Communist party.
