Weekend Open Thread

| April 19, 2024

Back when I posted about the 102-year-old man and wall graffiti, I tried to get images generated. However, the image generator was operating slowly. I had to settle for another image as it was taking too long to receive the generated images. They eventually came out. Here’s one of the results. Enjoy your weekend!

Stop lying. You guys don’t have a Commodore 64 in your office. Someone on “the inside” told me you guys have a Commodore VIC-20.

Back in the saddle again …
Good to have the throne under my six this week! Maybe I can start another double-ace run? We’ll see how that turns out. Meanwhile, time for a trivia drop, so let’s enjoy this one! And I acknowledge the assist from a couple of weeks ago. Thanks, guys!

DID YOU KNOW…?
Was a classic television police series set for another reboot when its creator died?
By Commissioner Wretched
didyouknowcolumn@gmail.com
Copyright 2024

After seven years of this nonsense, I don’t make too many mistakes, but when I make one, it’s a killer.

Three weeks ago, I said that penguins were the only birds who can swim but not fly. I was rather quickly reminded of birds like the cassowary, the ostrich, the rhea, the emu, the kiwi, and many other flightless birds who can swim.

Penguins are the only ones who can dive.

Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa … I goofed. Thanks to my friends at valorguardians.com who pointed it out to me. Maybe I can get this week’s trivia right!

Did you know …

… a classic artist only sold two paintings during his lifetime? The popular story about Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) is that he only sold one painting – The Red Vineyard – and that sale took place in 1889. But records show that van Gogh did sell at least one more painting, although neither went for a very good price: The Red Vineyard sold for 400 francs, the equivalent of £16 at the time. (Hard to make a living at that, wouldn’t you say?)

Commissioner Wretched

… a popular theme park is taken over by cats every night? Disneyland, the huge theme park in Anaheim, California, is overrun by stray cats every night. The park embraces the cats, because they keep the mouse population in check. Disney even treats the cats like pets, including spaying and neutering and making sure they are up to date on their shots. (There’s something disquieting about Disneyland using cats to keep down … mice.)

… goats have been used as torture devices? The “tickle torture,” devised by the ancient Romans, involved dipping the victim’s feet in salt water, then bringing in a goat to lick the salt water off. It would begin as something ticklish, but would soon degenerate to real pain. (A baaa-a-a-d thing to do.)

… ancient Romans always entered the home of a friend with their right foot? The Romans believed the left side of the body was thought to portend evil. The Latin word for left, in fact, is sinister. Our English word “sinister” means anything malevolent or threatening, and it derives directly from that Roman belief. (A pretty sinister thought.)

… only six species of animal are known to be able to recognize themselves in a mirror? Humans, of course, but also apes, dolphins, orcas, elephants, and European magpies have shown the ability to recognize themselves in mirrors, and not think the image is a different animal. (Humans are, however, the only ones who don’t always like what they see.)

Commissioner Wretched

… a classic television police drama was set for another reboot when its creator died? Dragnet, a police procedure drama which showed much of the minutiae of law enforcement, first aired on television from 1951 to 1959, starring its creator, Jack Webb (1920-1982). Webb brought the show back from 1967 to 1970, again playing the lead role of Sergeant Joe Friday. He was developing a third incarnation of the show in 1982, when he passed away from a heart attack. Each reboot featured Friday with a new partner: when the 1967 version was planned, original partner Ben Alexander (1911-1969) was working on Felony Squad and was not available, so Webb chose Harry Morgan (1915-2011) as his partner. Morgan was not available in 1982 when Webb was planning a return of the show as he was committed to AfterMASH, so Webb was said to be working with actor Kent McCord (born 1942) to reprise his role from Adam-12 as Friday’s new partner. Additional trivia note: The series was indeed rebooted in 2003 as L.A. Dragnet, with actor Ed O’Neill (born 1946) playing now-Lieutenant Joe Friday. The show became more of an ensemble police drama after its first twelve episodes, and was cancelled during its second season. The Los Angeles Police Department retired Joe Friday’s badge number 714 as a tribute to Webb. Also, a 1987 comedy movie was made based on the series, with Dan Aykroyd (born 1952) as the namesake nephew of Webb’s original character. Morgan appeared in the film as Captain Bill Gannon, reprising his character from the 1967 series. (Just the facts, ma’am.)

Commissioner Wretched

… the Earth’s ozone layer is vital to life? Sure, you don’t breathe it, but ozone – a molecule consisting of three atoms of oxygen bonded together – blocks much of the ultraviolet light that comes from the Sun. A 10% loss of the Earth’s ozone could result in 300,000 additional skin cancers and 1.75 million additional cases of cataracts world-wide each year. (Save the ozone!)

… the apple has been a symbol of love since the time of the ancient Greeks? The Celts believed that the apple represented love because it lasted so long after being picked. (I wish love lasted as long.)

… a fully-loaded supertanker needs 20 minutes to stop at normal speeds? The captain of the ship has to cut the tankers’ engines 15 miles away from the dock to be able to safely get into port. (That’s a long time to stand on the brakes!)

… some ancient customs were really extreme? Take, for example, the ancient customs observed by inhabitants of the island of Fiji. Back in the day, when a man on Fiji died, it was expected that his wives, his friends, and his slaves should all be strangled. (No comment.)

… the comprehension level of the American people has declined? Yeah, like you needed me to tell you that. But you can also prove it, at least with one indicator: according to studies, modern-day speeches by American presidents are geared to the comprehension level of a seventh grade student. By comparison, speeches by presidents in the late 1960s and early 1970s were geared to twelfth-grade comprehension. (I’ll let you select the president you want to pick on about this.)

Now … you know!

KoB

It doesn’t take a detective to discover that your trivia is the apple of the WOT. Everyone loves it…whether you lead in with a right hook or a left jab. Some have been known to nearly strangle themselves laughing, even those with lower than expected comprehension. As breathtaking as a lack of ozone…or the vision of OAM! We like the fact that we can sail away on the ship of knowledge each Friday. You do have the art of trivia down to a science. You are the cat’s meow!

One of my emotional support animals is a bird that neither flies nor swims. A bird that hangs out in the yard. I’ll take a four (4) piece…with biscuits…and smashed taters with gravy.

So, do the friends and slaves of those killed to mourn the loss of the initial dead man also get strangled? Inside of a week you could wipe out the entire population.

I remember I was jamming “Dream On” in my apartment back in ‘95 and one of my roommates, who swore up and down that he was a die-hard Aerosmith fan, asked me, “Did Aerosmith just come out with a new album?”

I responded, “No…this was off their first album.”

He replied, “This wasn’t on Permanent Vacation!”

To which I retorted, “Motherfucker, Permanent Vacation was NOT Aerosmith’s first album. They’ve been around since ‘73”

Muh-fugger probably thought that Run-DMC gave Aerosmith their big break with “Walk This Way.”🤣

Amateur Historian

Happy Friday! Hope everyone had a good week. So this week I’ll be doing another History Buffs Post, this time about a historical movie that was just alright. I’m talking about Roland Emmerich’s Midway (2019). Now when compared to Emmerich’s other “historical” movies (see 10,000 BC and The Patriot(gross)), Midway is surprisingly a historically accurate movie. It’s probably nothing compared to the 1976 version (which I’ve only seen as a kid, so I vaguely recall that film), but, while it is a largely historically accurate, I give the film a C+ to a B-. This is largely due to a a really stupid creative decision Emmerich makes at the end of the film. Otherwise, I would’ve said the film deserved a B to a B+. But anyway, History Buffs will explain more:

Amateur Historian

.

Amateur Historian

Right, so I was able to put this together in one day and it probably shows. I’ve been having alot on my plate recently and, due to a family emergency, I will not be moving to Texas this year. It’s disappointing, but it’s the right thing to do. But for the next movie review done by History Buffs, I’ll be committing more time to it because the next one will be about a terrible history movie where I want to contribute my own thoughts in ripping it to shreds. Stay tuned and have a great weekend!

Amateur Historian

Oh, and I forgot: I give A Bridge to Far an A to an A+. Forgot to do that last week.

Joe Short-Dicks Every Cannibal On The Congo!

Biden’s Cannibal Quips Slammed by Papua New Guinea Experts

Dan Ladden-Hall
President Joe Biden’s baffling suggestion that his uncle might have been eaten by cannibals after a plane crash off Papua New Guinea during World War II has, unsurprisingly, not gone over great with the people who actually live there or have carefully studied the region’s history.
The Democrat made the comments Wednesday while discussing the fate of Ambrose Finnegan, whom he affectionately referred to as “Uncle Bosie.” “He got shot down in New Guinea, and they never found the body because there used to be—there were a lot of cannibals, for real, in that part of New Guinea,” Biden said.

rlee-down
Amateur Historian

Open mouth. Insert foot.

-The potato-brain guide to the US Presidency.

Hack Stone

That’s how they started eating Uncle Bosey. Bet you can’t eat just one.

rgr769

They never found Uncle Bosie’s body because it is in the fuselage of the A-20 Havoc that ran out of fuel and went down in the ocean. Anyway, so says the sole survivor of this non-combat mishap where 2LT Bosie was a strap-hanger in the rear compartment of the aircraft. Bosie was a victim of inept piloting and rests in Davey Jones locker. His pilot was an LT, as well.

Hack Stone

If only the pilot behind the controls of that aircraft completed his DEI training, Uncle Bosey would be with us today. No joke.

rgr769

And that’s no malarky, Stoneyboy.

rgr769

I should clarify that in the official loss report of the subject A-20, it was the sole survivor who was in the rear of the plane that reported the plane ran out of fuel. Since he could not see the fuel gauges in the cockpit, there no way for him to have known that unless the pilot announced that on the intercom. So that maybe why the official DPAA report only says the plane went down after both engines shut down, as the A-20 was capable of maintaining altitude with one engine out and its prop feathered.

AW1Ed

Occom’s Razor says they ran out of gas. A fuel system malfunction perhaps? We’ll never know, but I’m fairly certain cannibals were not in the mix.

Hack Stone

In 2013, the local cannibals in the vicinity of Sisters Eagle Airport in Sister’s Oregon were all set for a banquet, but when Daniel Bernath emerged from the wreckage, they determined that he was past his “Best If Used By” date, by several decades.

rgr769

He just looked old, tough and indigestible, even back then.
