Weekend Open Thread

| February 2, 2024

One individual asked a series of questions on Quora. These questions had a common theme, why this person kept getting blocked or why this person could not post in specific locations. A track record of this individual’s interactions showed abrasiveness, poor interpersonal skills, verbal abusiveness, etc. All this individual had to do was look at his/her profile to get the answer to those questions. Ironically, this individual asked why people asked stupid questions. Once this person gains some self-awareness, he or she will have an “awakening.” Enjoy your weekend.

FIRST?!?

Commissioner Wretched

You beat me to it by one second, King … nice work!

Hack Stone

Missed it by one second. Hack blames his lovely bride Rosetta for distracting him at the crucial moment.

Hack Stone

What’s this wire transfer from KoB to Rosetta Stone 35 seconds ago in the amount of $13?

KoB

I conspired with Rosetta for a vast order of chicken wings.

Hack Stone

Hack does the vast chicken wing conspiracies. Rosetta heads up the Department of Lumpia Distribution. That’s just how she rolls.

W2

“Lumpia distribution” and “that’s how she rolls”. I see what you did there.

Hate_me

I’ve never been in the running for the vaunted First, so I’ve no dog in this fight….

Out of curiosity, wouldn’t the claim of “First” have to be declarative, rather than inquisitive?

Are you asking me or telling me?

KoB

Are you asking me or telling me?” Yes!

The EARNING (NEVER awarded) of the Title of First Commentor on The Vaunted TAH Friday Weekend Open Thread requires that the word FIRST or the numerical designation of 1st appear in the comment, uploaded, and posted before anyone else. IIRC, ChipNASA (?) laid claim to the title once with the spelling as Frist. A regular Donnybrook ensued amongst the runners up and an appeal made to TAH Complaint Dprt for a ruling. I think we’re still in non receipt of a reply from the Complaint Dprt Mgr, Hellan Waite. That’s where everyone was told to go. Rumor has it that Hellan Waite has gone thru gender reassignment surgery and now identifies as “Studly Hungwell”. I’m not chasing down THAT Rabbit Hole.

Not sure if the term “Oneth” would be acceptable. Now, as to the question/declaration spelling? With the intense competition, one could be questioning some of the usual suspects on them questioning the declaration of FIRST. All types of Trumped up charges have been threatened, including Russian Collusion, a vast chicken wing conspiracy, outdated Red Hatted Software, embedded bugs from said software, and accusations of wearing soft wear. I will declare that there is nothing questionable about the competition for FIRST. Only the Admin posting the WOT (or any OT) knows what time it will drop. There IS alot questionable about some of the competitors. They may not do alot for a Klondike Bar, but they WOULD do some sketchy sh*t for bourbon and bacon…or a TAH WOT FIRST.

Hate_me

Fair enough. Given that our CiC is far from decisive in anything, I suppose a questionable First on a milblog is apropos.

ChipNASA

See now aren’t you happy for old times sake I am the first frist, at least for today.

Happy week of kingdom of Dick weeds KoB

While the King of Battle enjoys a second week on the WOT throne, I’ll offer up my congratulations and some freshly-minted trivia. Enjoy, my friends!

DID YOU KNOW…?
Why do fans of the Baltimore Orioles owe their team’s existence to World War II?

Time goes by very quickly, doesn’t it?

I mean, look at the calendar. Here we are at the end of the first month of 2024 already. Goodness, it seems like just yesterday we were celebrating the arrival of the 21st Century!

It’s true what they say … the older you get, the faster time flies.

It’s also true that time flies like an arrow, and fruit flies like bananas.

No, I have no idea what the two statements have to do with each other. I just needed something to fill the introduction to this week’s silliness, and they happened to fit the bill.

Speaking of this week’s silliness, why not get right to it? Here’s the trivia, friends, and I hope you enjoy it!

Did you know …

… a popular sweet treat has its own holiday? Sort of, anyway. National Sugar Cookie Day is observed every July 9, and the best way to celebrate it is to – you guessed it – enjoy some sugar cookies. Maybe you could even bake your own! (And if you do, send me some.)

… hot dogs are legally sandwiches? Well, they are in California and New York, anyway. The law in both states says that the common frankfurter, inside a bun, is considered a sandwich. (Well, hot dog!)

Commissioner Wretched

… your favorite painting may have sfumato? Wait, don’t go get a paper towel or anything. Sfumato is a visual art term for a method of color blending and shading that creates a hazy or smoky effect. One of the most famous examples is in the background of the Mona Lisa, painted by Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). (And if you don’t mind, shoot me a note telling me how to pronounce sfumato. Thanks.)

… an infamous King of England was also a music composer? King Henry VIII (1491-1547) was an accomplished musician who composed several songs and instrumental works during his lifetime. His Majesty even had a collection of recorders, flute-like instruments that many modern children learn to play in elementary school. The king’s were made of ivory or wood, and several survive today. (I never hear of that being highlighted at the Renaissance Festival, though it should be.)

… three members of the same NBA team shared an unlikely coincidence? In 2015, three point guards playing for the Dallas Mavericks shared the same birthday – right down to the year. Deron Williams, José Juan Barea, and Raymond Felton all came into the world on June 26, 1984. (Birthday parties must have been a hoot.)

SFC D

I thought that the hazy, smoky effect behind the Mona Lisa was soup.

KoB

That sfumato came from that big ol’ tater that Mona was sharing with Leo.

Instead of head banging music, Henry made head chopping music.

Gun Bunny’s Birthday is the 23rd of March…every year. Make a note of it. He loves cookies…and Cold Beer…and ceegars…and cartridges…and top shelf hootch…and…

Commissioner Wretched

… fans of the Baltimore Orioles owe their team’s existence to World War II? Well, indirectly, anyway. Most Orioles fans won’t admit it, but prior to 1953 their beloved Birds were the hapless St. Louis Browns. A charter member of the American League in 1901 (as the Milwaukee Brewers), the Browns were a pretty big draw in St. Louis baseball from 1902 to 1926, often on par with the crosstown National League Cardinals. But from 1927 onward, fans began going to more Cardinals games, and the owners of the Browns reluctantly decided to move the team to Los Angeles for the 1942 season. The Browns (or whatever they would be called in L.A.) would play at that city’s Wrigley Field and Major League Baseball would come to the West Coast. Travel difficulties had already been worked out. The announcement of the move was set for Monday, December 8, 1941. But as we all know, on the day before, the Japanese Navy attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, bringing the United States into World War II. In the aftermath of the attack, the announcement was cancelled, as was the move. The Browns would win one pennant, in 1944, and would remain in St. Louis until the end of the 1952 season, when they would be sold to a group who moved them to Baltimore and renamed them the Orioles.

… opossums are virtually free from contracting rabies? Scientists aren’t exactly sure why it’s so rare for an opossum to catch rabies, but one reason could be the fact that they have a lower body temperature than most mammals. The fact that their blood basically isn’t warm enough could be what keeps the rabies virus from incubating in their bodies. (Besides, they eat ticks and do a really good job of playing dead. They’re cute!)

Skivvy Stacker

Baltimore has a baseball team?

KoB

Odd how all of the pro teams are now in sh*thole cities. Bread and circuses anyone?

Why’d the chicken cross the road? To prove to the ‘possum it could be done. Baked ‘possum and sweet taters at The Clampetts’ Mansion tonight. Baked Armadillos are ‘possum on the half shell.

SFC D

Armadillos are the Texas state bird. I might have an outstanding warrant for hitting one on I-10 outside of El Paso. What’s the statute of limitations on that? Call my lawer.

timactual

I drove through Texas once. Once is enough. “All in all, I’d rather be in Philadelphia”.

Spiders. Miles and miles of spiders, punctuated by the occasional armadillo.

Texas is not even a good fly-over state. It is painful to look at even from 30,000 feet.

Look what Texas did to Willy Nelson.

Graybeard

It takes a strong person to live in Texas (outside of the wusses in Austinengrad).
We are proud to say that everything in Texas either sticks, stings, or bites – and occasionally all three.

Sherman was here for a while after the Late Unpleasantness, and said “If I owned Hell and Texas, I’d rent out Texas and live in Hell.” To which we respond “Each feller should stand by his native country.”

A well-known ditty runs

“The sun has riz,

The sun has set,

And here we is,

in Texas yet.”

And yet, there are those poor souls who seem to be unable to appreciate the beauty and the grandeur of The Great Lone Star State.

That’s why God made all the other, lesser places.

A song about the st louis browns

Commissioner Wretched

I’ll tell you how rabid a baseball fan I am … my firm belief is that only two sports exist. Baseball, and everything else. That said, teams like the Browns and the Seattle Pilots fascinate me. Thanks for sharing that little ditty about the Browns!

David

Veeck was the king of odd promotions. Actually, Pete Gray was a pretty good fielder – they did a pretty decent movie about him starring John-Boy Walton about 30 years ago. And while I bleed Cardinal red, I also have a Browns hat I wear on occasion (as well as a couple of Grays hats, no relation to Pete.)

Commissioner Wretched

… a Chinese man became a multi-millionaire with air? Chen Guangbiao (born 1968) sold cans of fresh air for five yuan (about 80 cents) in China in response to the country’s worsening air pollution. In just ten months Chen pulled in six million dollars. Chen was already pretty wealthy when he started the canned-air gig; now he’s worth along the lines of $400 million. (Hey, aren’t Communists supposed to be against becoming millionaires? Or did I miss something?)

… at least one Western leader did not want the Berlin Wall to fall in 1989? As Communism crumbled in eastern Europe, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher (1925-2013) pleaded with the leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev (1931-2022), to keep the wall in place, asking him to do anything in his power to prevent its destruction. Thatcher feared that a unified Germany would “disrupt the balance of power” in Europe. (Even the best politicians get it wrong sometimes.)

… the odds of winning the lottery are not really very good? In fact, according to one statistical summary, you have a better chance of dying on your way to buy a lottery ticket than you have of actually winning the lottery. (Not that that will keep me from trying, of course.)

… the country’s first president had a serious sweet tooth? George Washington (1732-1799) created his very own sweet egg nog recipe, and also brought ice cream-making equipment to the capital in New York when he took office as president. (His sweet tooth was the only real one he had!)

Now … you know!

Hate_me

Looking at the state of Europe, today, Thatcher was prophetic.

How many modern day comm rats used canned air to blow the dust off PC Boards? We used to sell the hell out of the cans until that whole CFP thing started.

The politicians of 1945 shoulda listened to Patton.

Canned air and trichloroflouroethane. Wonderful stuff but deadly in confined spaces.

Good to see California and New York deciding THAT pressing issue. How much time was spent debating that.

All the other issues in those states were much less important I suppose.

Amateur Historian

Happy Friday! Hope everyone had a good week. So, here is Part 4 of Potential History’s Pacific Campaign series. This is one of my personal favorites of his content. I especially like his rather savage analysis of the Battles of Attu and “Kiska.” (I put Kiska into quotation marks due to the fact the “battle” (if you can call it that) was nothing more than a massive friendly fire incident between American and Canadian troops. I don’t even know why they decided to call it a battle. Maybe because by that point it was too late to pack all the men and equipment back onto the ships and pretend like nothing happened. But I digress. In addition, there is a quick blerb about the Battle of the Bismarck Sea and the Battle of Tarawa, with it’s effects on the American and Japanese Homefronts. Here you guys go and skip to 1:00 if you don’t want to watch the video game ad.):

Amateur Historian

Here’s another one by Potential History. This one is about the USS William Porter (DD-579). She is something of a meme ship in the US Navy, mostly to do with how she almost killed President FDR on his way to the Tehran Conference. This incident is sourced, but, if you go on the web, you can find a whole bunch of less credible stories that Potential History doesn’t cover. Like FDR’s Secret Service Agent pulling out his sidearm to try and shoot the incoming torpedo, the Porter shooting a round from her 5-inch gun into a naval base commander’s wife’s flowerbed, and other US Ships, when making contact with the Porter, radioing and joking with the ship, saying “Don’t shoot! We’re Republicans!,” with the Porter’s sister ship, USS Luce, being far less polite due to the Porter allegedly raking the Luce’s deck with gunfire after misidentifying her as Japanese. Now these are just stories that I assume were created by Sailors and History nerds over the years to dunk on the ship because… well it’s kinda fun. That’s not to say that the Porter or her crew didn’t serve honorably because they did, being sunk in the Battle of Okinawa after successfully shooting down a kamikaze. But because people’s memories are short and because of that one near colossal fuck-up that got attached to their name, they will forever be known as “that one ship” (At least on the internet). So, in that sense, I’ll say it sucks to be them. But anyway, tangent over. Here you go:

Amateur Historian

Well, that took a little bit to put together. I’ve been meaning to put introductory headers to the videos I share here for awhile now, but couldn’t figure a great time to do it (I work a busy 10-hour/day job after all). Not to mention work has been insane the past couple of weeks. But, anyway, hope everyone has a good weekend!

Interestingly (to me) is the Canadian Soldiers were issued American helmets in an attempt to prevent friendly fire.

Something reminded me of an article written by liberal newspaper columnist (yea, I know that was redundant). The columnist was raging about a sheriff who absolutely defined, in her words, what was wrong with Police Departments. She blabbed on about white supremacy and police abuse. The sheriff she was seriously blaming for society’s woes was Sheriff Buford T Justice.

Quora used to be fairly entertaining place to get answers to all kinds of questions. Lately (since Trump especially) and all the leftist lunacy it has become just another online cesspool for crackpots to gather.

“Isn’t it time we do away with the 2nd Amendment and go door to door demanding people’s guns?”

“Thugs everywhere should get together and confiscate guns from people.”

“My neighbor collects guns and this makes me uncomfortable. What can I do to get them arrested?”

“Gun lovers — we’re coming for you and we’re gonna win. How does this make you feel?”

You scroll forever and see piles of nonsense like this asked by what appears to be adults. Sad.

Graybeard

Present and unaccountable.
Y’all have a great weekend.

Graybeard

Now that the anesthesia fog has abated a bit, update on my procedure yesterday that kept me out of the running (ha!) for the Throne:
To recap, I needed a “Flex with APC” – fully “Flexible Sigmoidoscopy with Argon Plasma Coagulation” to address radiation damage to the rectum due to the prostate radiation therapy, officially known as “radiation proctitis”.
There was the usual pleasantness of a colon prep like for a colonoscopy.
Mrs. GB and I had to get up at 0330 to prepare and make the 1.5 hour drive to the facility that has the equipment for the APC.
The experience is not unlike a colonoscopy, but the anesthesia knocked me loopy for 36 hours after. (And got me out of work for 2 days – upside to everything.)
There is some slight bleeding as I heal, but not as bad as before, and the recovery seems to be proceeding as expected.
Follow up in 10 days.

So far not a terrible complication of the prostate cancer treatment. Not something to be afraid of, by any means.

Y’all have a great weekend.
(Oh, I chalk up 72 rotations around ol’ Sol Sunday – joint birthday party with two grands and #1 Son after church.)

Yay, no more registration fees and speed with abandon. No current registration alone will save me over 500 a year if this comes to pass. It brings a smile to my face just waiting to use that Jamie Farr line from Cannon Ball Run where he rips the rear view mirror out of the car, tosses it and says “What’s behind me is unimportant”.

fyi, the Dem who floated it claims he just wants to get people talking about it, that he has no intention of actually promoting it. But since these sort of offenses typically target folks of color it should be addressed.

Don’t forget NYC’s cash cards for illegals. The city is providing them with preloaded debit cards to the tune of $35 million.

Son of a BITCH.

He did it again. And he got CAUGHT again.

I can certainly say….. IF I tried this stunt,
to fake the voice of Trump, to tout myself as a “war hero”….

Many of you would want me head… and a piece of me ass.

Hack Stone

Hack Stone was reading this article the other day, and it looks like a series of bad decisions within his command that led to his unnecessary death. But it got Hack to thinking, in today’s politically correct military, with the full DEI in full implementation, is the term “Man overboard!” no longer acceptable in the US Navy? We certainly would not want to misgender anyone who fell overboard.

Hack Stone

Came across this one on YouTube. Hack remembers way back in the day watching this episode in first run syndication.

Hack Stone

No one thought that it was worthy to mention that today is the 65th anniversary of the day the music died”? Hack Stone wanted to work up a rework of that pop classic in tribute to the anniversary of the day that the disbarred lawer nosedived, but it is not yet a completed work. Maybe Hack will have his shot together for the next Bernath Day.

A couple of Buddy Holly covers by Lemmy’s side project:

There’s also a pretty good version of “Well, alright” by Waylon Jennings out there on the Tube of You, which is cool because ol’ Waylon played bass in Buddy Holly’s touring band.

RIP Buddy. It’s interesting to contemplate how Rock ‘n Roll would have evolved had Buddy Holly not died and whether he would’ve stayed in the rock genre or gone into country. Very talented musician, taken far too soon.

This “lever-action” thing shows promise, it just might catch on!

Yup, pretty surprising innovation for them child killin’ machines of death. Little known fact, a skilled CAS shooter can lever off ten rounds in about seven seconds and hit every rifle target with a lever action rifle.

It’s as cold and cloudy today as it was on that day 4 Feb 1981. Rest Easy, Mama…
